Stuff. We've all got it, and generally way more of it than we can handle.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the average household has collected more than 300,000 personal items. And with the average size of new apartments dropping to just 934 square feet, our closets, drawers, and shelves are overflowing more than ever—making that minimalist aesthetic we see splashed all over social media seem all the more unreachable. (Seriously, where do the influencers put all their clutter?)

With all that in mind, MakeSpace, a storage solution that combines technology with trained moving professionals, conducted a survey on the State of Stuff in America. And unsurprisingly, Americans are desperate for one thing: more storage. But it's what they're willing to give up that's quite surprising…

What Would You Trade for More Closet Space?

We'd imagine most people would be willing to give up a few things in order to have more closet space. Maybe alcohol, or chocolate. However according to the State of Stuff survey, many people are willing to bet big.

  • Nearly 50% (49.1%) of people surveyed claim they would be willing to be celibate for six months in order to have more closet space
  • 51% of all men surveyed said they would be open to gaining 10 pounds for six months in order to have more closet space
  • Almost 20% (17.2%) of people surveyed said they would take a pay cut for six months in order to have more closet space

Whether it's their wallet, waistline, or sex life, Americans clearly would give up a lot in exchange for a few more square feet.

The survey was conducted online with Ask Your Target Market (AYTM) across 1,000 men and women in the United States between April 19-20, 2018.
