Sustainable Sites: Green Rated Gardens

January is not the most obvious time to be talking about gardens, but you’ll be surprised to see what’s blooming in the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, DC.

The United States Botanic Garden is now a model for the new Sustainable Sites Initiative, which is pushing for a point system for rating landscapes.

From an article in the New York Times:
With the current LEED ratings, said Ray Mims, the garden’s conservation horticulturist and one of the leaders in developing the initiative, “you could get a platinum-certified building and potentially do a very poor job with the site.”

If the U.S. Green Building Council were to adopt the initiative LEED certification would hinge not only on the materials of the building but also the sustainability of the landscaping.
