Here's a very real example of what's happening with our electronic junk. Not all is lost, though...

The organization Take Back My TV is working to encourage manufacturer's to take back and responsibly recycle electronics. Sony was the first to sign on.

One bit of mis-information Take Back My TV is perpetuating: when TV goes all-digital in 2009, a mass of TVs will become obsolete, and therefore recycling will be a huge issues. We've already addressed that fact here, noting that you only need the addition of a digital tuner for your TV.

The transition, however, may encourage people to make the jump to HDTV, and therefore have a TV to get rid of. Since the federal government hasn't been keen on setting guidelines, this is all the more reason that the recycling issue needs attention at the source, with manufacturers.
