Thanksgiving: Forget the Flat Screen—It's Time for Glogg!

Oh, wait. Today is Thanksgiving.

We're gearing up in the kitchen, but wanted to let you know that we're thankful for you, our readers, on this most American of holidays.

We're also inspired by yesterday's discussion of hygge. In the spirit of creating a bit of hygge, here's a recipe for glogg, a hot mulled wine drink. Start with 1 bottle red wine.

Then add:
3 Tbsp Madeira
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup raisins
2 sticks cinnamon
6 whole cloves
1 orange peel
1/4 cup blanched, slivered almonds
1/4 cup vodka

Simmer everything in a large pot for a few hours, then stir in vodka right before you ladle out cupfuls to increasingly happy guests. We like to add a bit of honey to each cup.

Glogg is more of a Christmastime drink, so if you're planning on shopping tomorrow, you can think of it as preparation for the onslaught of Christmas decor. And if you'll be staying at home to cancel your catalogs… well, glogg can help that process to be a bit less painful, too.

What to do with leftovers? Throw in a cup of sugar and a bit more wine and the remnants make a great base for poached pears.
