October is not known for its huge sales as retailers, instead, gear up for next month's Black Friday "event" and prepare for the deluge of holiday shopping. But, that doesn't mean there aren't some smart buys this month. Take a look at the best things to buy in October...
Eclipsing even post-Christmas sales, prices on Halloween items get slashed the second the holiday is over. Look for deals on Halloween costumes and decor the day after Halloween and even, often, on October 31st. It's risky to pick out a costume a year in advance, but if you have small kids who like to get dressed up, the first days of November are the best days to add to their pretend play wardrobe cheaply.
Retailers put out a lot of jeans around the back-to-school push and what doesn't sell gets put on sale in October.
Flights to Europe
The winter "low season" is the least popular time to travel to Europe, but airlines still have to offer flights (thanks to bilateral agreements between nations) making it the most affordable time to travel (with the exception of the weeks surrounding Christmas and New Years). To help fill the seats airlines start to offer discounts and deals in late fall for winter travel so now is the time to start making your plans and searching for cheap tickets.
Apple launched its newest products at the end of September so for those of us who are happy enough with an older model, now is a good time to look for a deal. If you're comfortable buying a used or refurbished phone, lots of people are looking to unload their older generation Apple products this month.
Sample Sale Items
If you live in New York or other fashion-centric cities, sample sales pick up again in the fall after a summer slow down. Look for clothing, accessories, jewelry and sometimes home goods sales.
October is National Plan a Cruise Month so if you've been thinking about this type of a vacation, check out what deals are being offered this month.

Tires aren't a super fun thing to buy but sometimes you really need to replace old ones. If it's winter tires you need, you'll traditionally find the best prices in October before bad winter weather sends more consumers to the stores and prices go up accordingly.
