In my humble apartment closet space is at a premium, so after many years of suffering a poor night's sleep on a too-old bed I jumped at the chance to enhance my both my storage and slumber situation!
My parameters were fairly straightforward, but I needed the total kit and caboodle: frame, box spring, and mattress for a decent price. It also had to be comfortable, attractive, and had to offer some kind of storage.
The search eventually lead me to the Ikea Sultan Alsarp. Because this model has no box spring, the insides of the bed frame are made accessible as storage through the use of a pneumatic lift system. With the addition of legs ($20 for 4), I not only had the chance to store things in the bed, but under it as well!
While building the bed was a bit of a chore, in the end it was well worth it. There is nothing flimsy-feeling about this piece from Ikea's repertoire; it is a strong and substantial design (no wonder the total package weight was 161lbs). The only concern I have is just how intrigued my cats are every time I lift the mattress—but I can't really blame them—after all, I still marvel at it myself!
