Do you want a color palette for your home that is sophisticated and serene? Dynamic and bold? Flexible for any home style? Easy to implement? Look to three colors often considered fashion basics — white, black and brown — and combine them in different ways to create a home that excites and relaxes.

The trick of making a really sophisticated home with just black, brown and white is thinking about each of those as a column of different shades. So a deep, dramatic black, but also dark grays, too. A nice stark, clean, modern white, but don’t be afraid of light grays and creams. Brown can be anything from the browns of a camel-colored leather sofa to the natural wood of wood trim, and even stretch all the way to earthy terracotta and brownish, reddish brick red.

Use brown, black and white in many different shades, on different surfaces and in different textures and you’ll create a room that can exist trichromatic-ally OR you can use this sophisticated base of three to be a jumping off point for a room that features a couple of pops of color. Take inspiration on how to pull this look off in your home from the seven gorgeous rooms gathered from around the web and our house tours:
