"My girlfriend Rebecca and I just bought a new condo in Columbia Heights/U St area of Washington DC where we have a great little patio. We've been working on it for a couple of months and I think we've put together a nice little outdoor space! The main use is for growing herbs because Rebecca loves cooking with fresh herbs...." [more below]

We've planted a few little grasses (not sure of the names) and flowers including cala lilies and gerberas. We're trying to train some honeysuckle along the top of the patio fence. It's only a couple months along, but it seems to be doing nicely. Right behind the fence is the back entrance to our 20 unit condo building so everyone entering from the back can enjoy our space! We love grilling and eating out on the patio when it's warm out.

The herbs we have are: basil, rosemary, two kinds of parsley, thyme, oregano, sage, mint, watercress, and chives.

Those two small trees are Japanese sky pencils. So far they are doing pretty well. We don't get a ton of direct sunlight so we try to get mostly shade/part shade plants.

We got most of the pots from Kmart and the planters came from We spray painted the planters silver to stand out a bit more. There's also a nice grill in the opposite corner by the steps from our unit.

I know we can't win any prizes, but we just wanted to share a little slice of green in the city!

Funny story – I actually dropped the camera on the patio when trying to take pictures a couple weeks ago for the greenest thumb contest. Luckily I was able to get it fixed in time so I could send you some pics! I just took these last night and can probably get some better ones during the day.

Love the site!
