King of Halloween 2016, David S. Pumpkins, is back to baffle and delight you. The breakout SNL skit is getting the animated holiday special treatment with The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special airing this Saturday, October 28, with Tom Hanks returning to voice the titular character.
Along with Hanks, sketch writers Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan will lend their voices to the show, as well as Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage. We don't know a ton about the special, but we can guess that it will be hilarious, weird and full of dancing.
"Set in a small suburban town on All Hallows' Eve, the special centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way."
If you're wondering how exactly we got here, the answer is complicated but also hilarious. According to Vulture's fantastic, An Oral History of David S. Pumpkins, the sketch was a bit of a late night/early morning Hail Mary.
"The door's open, and there's David Pumpkins. I remember writing, "I'm David Pumpkins," and then Bobby added the "S" – "David S. Pumpkins."
"Why not? At four o'clock in the morning, you don't ask questions. You just go, "What should be his first line?" And Mikey goes, "How's it hanging?" "Great, write it down.""
So David S. Pumpkins fans across the globe can rest easy knowing their favorite Halloween hero will soon return to them. And if animated cartoons aren't your thing you can return to the original sketch.
