10 Favorite Home How-To Tutorials

I have seen some pretty great How-Tos in my time. ("My time"—ha! I realize that sounds like I'm 95 and bequeathing my last words of wisdom.) What I mean to say is... there are some pretty handy people out in the world, and thank goodness they're willing to share their skills with the rest of us. The following 10 How Tos pulled from Re-Nest's archives are a few of my favorites, both aspirational (the "one day I'm gonna" projects to be filed away for some to-be-determined date) as well as practical (pointers for everyday activities).

Aspirational Projects

Ideas to file away for a lazy weekend

1. How To Make a Bubble Yarn Lampshade
My sister tells me I have a thing for circles, mostly because they keep showing up in my home—from the design in my curtains to the patterns I choose for my throw pillows. And considering how much I like this bubble lampshade, she may have a point.

2. How To Build an Ace-Hotel Inspired Plumbing Pipe Shelf
Michelle built this shelf in her home, and the end result was that perfect combination of industrial-meets-polished.

3. How To Make an Upholstered Headboard from a Wool Blanket
Seriously one of my favorite projects ever. Daniel is amazingly DIY-savvy, and this headboard just goes to prove it.

4. How To Start a Worm Home Composting System
Vermicomposting! I have yet to start this in my own apartment, but I have plans! And when I do start it, this post from guest blogger Maria Finn will be my first stop.

5. How To Make a Hinged Tabletop from Hollow Core Doors
A great solution for small spaces! I actually sleep on a bed frame made from two hollow core doors. (Which, incidentally, had to be sawn in half before it could fit through my front door because I am apparently incapable of accurately measuring the width and height of my stairwell. But THAT is another story.) This variation is totally appealing because it gives owners a quick and easy way to amp up their dining room table when they're in need of a little extra space.

6. How To Paint a Room
Seems easy enough, right? Wrong. DIY painting can actually be quite challenging if you don't know what you're doing. To prime or not to prime? What kind of brushes should you use? What do people mean when they talk about "cutting in," and is painter's tape really necessary? (You like the idea of freestyling.) This detailed painting tutorial from Rachel, our resident green architect, covers all those questions and takes you through the process from start to finish.

Practical Pointers

How to do everyday things better and more efficiently

7. How To Green Clean the Mold In Your Shower
I admit it: the mildew in my (small, not-well-ventilated) shower can get appalling sometimes. For a greener alternative to bleach, this post is a great place to start.

8. How To Pare Down Your Stuff
This is a good reminder post on how to thoughtfully and mindfully declutter your home.

9. How To Whiten Laundry Without Chlorine Bleach
Cleaning solutions are one of the most popular questions we get from both green newbies and experts alike, particularly how to whiten laundry. This How-To offers a few alternatives to using bleach.

10. How To Make a Fruit Fly Trap
Totally fool-proof. I didn't believe it initially, since my first trap took a day or two to really work. But it's fast, cheap and effective.
