The Newest Emojis & How Best To Use Them
We’re [insert new emoji face with star eyes] about the news that 56 brand-spankin’ new emojis will be hitting our keyboards this year, thanks the preview of Emoji 5.0 released this week.
According to Emojipedia, Emoji version 5.0 “includes 56 new emojis from Unicode 10.0, as well as 183 emoji sequences used for gender and skin-tone variants and subdivision flags. Most vendors are expected to support 69 unique images, with 24 of these supporting five additional skin tone variants. Ten (10) of the new emojis have a base (non-gendered) emoji which may or may not display with a gender-inclusive appearance.”
In addition to the 1,851 emojis now available, 5.0 includes soon-to-be frequently used faves like a woman breastfeeding a baby, a soup dumpling, a woman wearing a hijab, a bearded man, the return of the puking face, and a “head asplode” face, just to name a few. In this Millennial-driven, post-modern world, emojis — alone, or strung together — have also become a new form of shorthand, conveying with image icons a range of emotions easier to communicate in a few taps than to actually articulate. Or at least with more humor — even across language barriers.
Especially nowadays, having a no-reason group text going at all times with your closest friends is good for mental health — providing an instant support system even when your ride-or-dies are actually a diaspora. Proof in practice, this week one HelloGiggles writer even shared a personal story about how group texts cured her loneliness.
But for fun, here’s our list of new emojis we didn’t know we needed until we needed them, which bring those all-important missives to your bestie group texts down to a single icon.

When you’re having a no good, very bad day & you just need your friends to send you cute animal videos, stat.
When someone is acting like a know-it-all and you just want to say, “Oh you fancy, huh?”
When a joke goes over like a fart in church and no one knows how to respond.
When you all Cumberbitches and wish Sherlock would just come back on the air already.
