Years rented: Nearly 2
In the midst of "Art, Craft and Collections" month, we're taking a peek inside a loft with tons of ideas for displaying art. The Post Family isn't your average family—they're a Chicago art collective with their own printmaking studio, office, and gallery space...
As graphic designers and artists, each family member has a great eye. (You might remember seeing Alex's apartment and Sam's live/work loft on Apartment Therapy before.) The group moved their workspace into this loft almost two years ago, and they've built it up from a few empty rooms into a series of galleries, a letterpress and printing room, and a back office that doubles as a hang-out space.
Since moving in, they've collaborated on projects with the Obama Campaign, hosted exhibitions of work by local and international artists, and documented the workspaces of other printmakers and painters in their series of online studio tours. We stopped by the studio during their latest show, an exhibition of prints and photos titled "Family View."
Our style: A collective mash-up of each other's interests. Utilitarian in every sense of the word.
Inspiration: Each other. Our friends. Like-minded folks in the creative community at large.
Favorite Element: We'd say the letterpress room, from the typecases to the presses—or the Panther Lamp in the back.
Biggest Challenge: Keeping each other in line.
Biggest Embarrassment: The Big Table (a once beautiful work table with paper storage now falling apart and seemingly immovable). Also, our once usable vintage Massimo Vignelli mugs now full of paint and photo emulsion.
Proudest DIY: The whole setup–really proving that when a bunch of able people get together to accomplish something, things take shape faster than you can imagine. Within the first 6 months, we went from an empty studio space to one filled with type, a letterpress, a darkroom…
Biggest Indulgence: Scott.
Best advice: Don't. But definitely do.
Dream source: The Hamilton wood type archives.
Resources: Craigslist, Post 27, print shop close-outs, Home Depot, friends, family, our own sweat and blood … you name it. We're resourceful.
What's On View Now: Family View, a group photography show featuring Paul Elledge, Leasha Overturf and Jo-Nell Sieren
1. Nick Campbell does something of interest! Coming in October.
2. Post Press, our new publishing company for beautiful artist books.
3. Scott's "Designing Obama" book will be the first launch this winter.
(Thanks, Post Family!)
