The Writing's on the Furniture

Text as art and as decor is increasingly popular these days, something bound to appeal to those of us who love typography. Gradually, text and type are moving off the wall and onto other surfaces in the home. If you share our love of letters, you may also enjoy these fabulous furniture pieces that highlight the beauty of the written word.

  1. This fabulous coffee table is a DIY effort from Little Red Hen. Though the project tooks hours of painstaking effort, the end result is more than worth the time invested. This is a great project for a thrifted wooden table or tray that needs a little TLC.
  2. Here's a DIY reupholstery project that uses coffee bags to cover a chair that has seen better days. These bags come in a variety of styles but most have a strong textual element that make them ideal for creating a reading chair that you can read.
  3. IKEA no longer sells this graffiti version of the popular Billy bookcase , but if you have a steady hand, you could certainly acheive the same effect with a permanent marker and an old white bookcase. If the overall look is a bit much for you, consider removing the back panel to write on then popping it back in; the text you choose will become the backdrop for a well-designed bookcase.
  4. This lovely colorful chair is covered with pictures not words- but the process for the DIY remains the same. This was a charity project, but you could do it for personal use with any message you found meaningful enough to immortalize in furniture.
