There's a New Type of Netflix Super User Out There
Hello. My name is Nora and I watched all of American Vandal in a day. The bad news is, I shirked a whole bunch of responsibilities in order to do so. The good news is, I'm not alone! Netflix has a term for people like me, "Binge Racer."
Did you already block off your weekend to finish the second season of Stranger Things? Do your friends and family wonder about your whereabouts whenever a new season of Orange is the New Black drops? You too might be a Binge Racer, welcome.
In a recent release, Netflix describes us almost heroically, "Accomplishing in a day what takes others weeks to achieve, Binge Racers strive to be the first to finish by speeding through an entire season within 24 hours of its release*." Binge Racers live for the thrill of completing a storyline, and being one of the first to do so. Their numbers have grown rapidly, with 5 million binge racers in 2017 compared to 200,000 in 2013.

There's no clear pattern to the shows consumed most rabidly, and it's interesting to see Denmark popping in on the number three spot (Netflix and hygge, anybody?). According to the release, the top shows do vary by country, with Canada binging on Trailer Park boys, Fuller House topping the charts in Ecuador and Marvel's The Defenders filing in the number one spot in South Korea. And while it is no surprise that our media consumption habits our changing, it is interesting to note that Binge Racing has become common enough to warrant its own moniker.
Are you a binge racer, or the exact opposite? What are you watching these days?
