This Bookcase Comes With Its Own Chair

The search for the perfect reading chair that is both a stylish and feng-shui friendly addition to your home library just got a whole lot easier. Enter Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto’s Bookchair, a clever, artistic seating and storage combo wherein the chair fits inconspicuously into a customized, built-in slot on the accompanying bookshelf.

“Bookchair comes to life through the aggregation of a new element, the chair within the bookcase, based on a concept that aims to reflect the basic, fundamental relationship between a book and its reader,” said Fujimoto of his innovative chair-bookshelf pairing.

Both bibliophiles and minimalists will appreciate the sleek design of Bookchair, which Fujimoto constructed from wooden fiber panels for contemporary Italian furniture design brand Alias. According to Dezeen, the chair is only available in white in order to highlight the aesthetic appeal of the “strong ties between the content and the container.”

In a design that makes it infinitely easier to maintain order in a book-filled room, the innovative shelf features a cutout that allows the chair to slide in and out of the space.

Describing Alias’ collaborative design concept with Fujimoto – the man behind London’s Serpentiine Gallery Pavilion – the company said, “The bookcase becomes an element of the environment where it is installed, playing an active, continually changing role, adding, “Bookchair comes to life through the aggregation of a new element, the chair within the bookcase, based on a concept that aims to reflect the basic, fundamental relationship between a book and its reader.”

Bookchair is the latest piece of Alias furniture that seamlessly integrates objects that serve functions independent of the other. Previously, the brand partnered with lauded design firm Nendo to introduce the Flow Bowl, a design that expertly doubles as a coffee table and container.
