As J.K. Rowling herself once said, "It's important to remember that we all have magic inside us." One Harry Potter super-fan, former teacher, and tech geek is hoping to prove that magic is already very present in this world by opening an actual Wizarding Pub.
Using the "magic" of RFID and other very real, very existing technologies, founder proprietor Matt Cortland is launching a Kickstarter campaign on June 26th to raise half a million dollars to open The Cauldron Wizarding Pub & Inn in London, "a wizarding pub and tech lab where we use science, technology, and design to bring the magic described in fantasy books to life in an interactive experience."
Some of the "magical" experiences powered by adapted technology and design Cortland hopes to feature at The Cauldron include: moving photos; levitating candles; wand-responsive lights; specialty auto-refilling pint glasses (that fill from the bottom of the glass); taps that pour beer using a magic wand; potion-inspired, science-based cocktails; a food menu from the fantasy texts (including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other food allergy considerations); and doors that lock/unlock with a wand.
In order to engage fans and supporters and crowdsource ideas, Cortland will also be hosting Wizarding Hackathons, "weekend events where fans of all backgrounds come together and invent magical elements that we will use in the Cauldron." Upcoming Hackathons focus on topics that combine "Tech + Magic" with brewing, gastronomy, mixology, hardware, software, design, baking — even "Candy + Science." There's even a Wiki for fans and Hackathon participants to come together from all across the globe to connect and collaborate on the idea.
Follow the magic, and behind-the-scenes creation of DIY Kickstarter perks (and 2017 holiday gift options) such as hand-bound books and candle wax-sealed Thank You letters, on YouTube and Instagram (@TheCauldronPub) — or just back the Kickstarter campaign when it launches on June 26th. There's also a podcast, The Magic of Things, which "will take listeners from Kickstarter project to Wizarding Hackathon to opening day, and keep you involved as we build something extraordinary" each week.
