Let’s go back, back to the beginning: Before Laguna Beach was the setting of an early-aughts teen reality show, it was a playground of old Hollywood. This nautical seaside compound is part of that storied history.

Built in the 1920s for director Edward H. Griffith (his brother was D.W. Griffith of Birth of a Nation infamy) and his wife, actress America Chedister, the couple’s love of the ocean inspired the nautical theme of the property. The current owners have restored the 4-bedroom, 3,545-square-foot home with that original vision in mind.

The compound includes the main home plus two guest houses—one of which was built from an old boat cabin. The lighthouse, a landmark on the Laguna coast, contains a viewing room and a bathroom. Private stairs descend from the terrace to a remote beach, and the pool built into the cliff is replenished daily by ocean tides.

The seaside property is listed for $16.995 million.
