In this tech-minded world, our electrical outlets are a vital part of our home. But from loose-fitting plugs to discolored and old receptacles, our outlets can sometimes need a little DIY love. Thankfully, this is an easy and affordable home task; one new standard outlet should just set you back a dollar or two!

This Weekend's Assignment:

Upgrade your home's old and outdated electrical outlets

Take a tour of your home and check out your electrical outlets. Do any look like they need replacing? Or are any just really old and could use a new look? Make a list of the ones you'd like to replace, add up the supplies you'll need and get to work. The how-to below will help. And please remember safety first if you try this assignment (as in double checking that the power is off before doing any work).

And don't forget about fresh electrical outlet covers while you tackle this task (also quite affordable)! Even if your electrical outlets don't need replacing, you can still update their look by adding new electrical outlet covers, replacing ones that currently might be old, cracked, dirty or just not your style any more. And should you find yourself in the electrical zone this weekend, consider updating any old or outdated light switches, too → How To Replace a Light Switch.
