This Tiny Scandi-Insipired Playhouse Is Both Whimsical and Modern
For children, literally any space can be a playspace, but as many parents will attest, it also serves families well for the little ones to have a designated spot to engage in their free-spirited activities. The Ilo Playhouse is one of those places.
Created by architecture firm Koto Design, which specializes in luxury prefabricated and modular homes, the playhouse is made from sustainable materials and enables its tiny occupants to channel their free-spiritedness into activities that allow them to forge a deeper connection with nature.
The Ilo Playhouse takes its design cues from Scandinavian cabins, built with environmental consciousness and durability in mind. The attractive, angular structure features a sloped roof and is constructed from a locally sourced wood. It contains a recycled rubber floor and finishes and paints derived from natural products. The interior is partially enclosed by three walls that each contain cutouts. Inside, children can take full advantage of their imagination by reading, playing with toys or simply enjoying a quiet escape. A fourth wall remains open to the outdoors to bridge the gap between the children and their natural surroundings.
The structures are handmade in the U.K. and can be delivered almost anywhere either completely constructed or in panels that can be installed on site.
Other playhouses from Koto Design include Grace, a creative collaboration with London’s Giles Miller Studio. The tiny structure features a chalk-painted interior that allows children to draw on the surfaces. It also features two storage seats and a small table as well as flooring covered with natural felted gray wool. Théa is basically a flipped version of Grace, as it sits on its side. The unique design really brings out the playfulness in children, thanks to an opening that they can climb in and out of.
If you’re an adult feeling a little jealous of these fabulous hangout spots for kids, not to worry: Koto designs adult spaces, too.
