This Baker Made a Spectacular Toilet Paper Cake, Because It’s All Anyone Can Think About

At 3 a.m. on a Wednesday, Kate could not fall asleep. We’ve all probably experienced those restless nights, when you cannot seem to fall asleep due to worries and busy thoughts. And during the coronavirus outbreak, those anxieties might be at their peak. 

Instead of just lying in bed letting the tension build, she chose to channel her concerns into something relaxing. Kate is a major baker, and she finds whipping up delicious cakes, cookies, and other baked goods helps her to unwind. So, she figured 3 a.m. or not, now would be a great time to get baking.

Her inspiration for her nightly baking session? Toilet paper. Something on the top of everyone’s mind right now: Can you get a roll? Will you run out? Oh the racing thoughts! Apparently people had been tagging her in other toilet paper cake photos on social media saying she could make a better one. So, she got to work.

Kate posted a photo of the cake on her Instagram account @rarerollingobject, and it’s truly something to behold. The mochi fondant is so paper-like and the pattern on the cake looks just like toilet paper. The interior of the cake is dark chocolate and kokuto (which is Japanese black sugar).

Kate told BuzzFeed that this was more than just a pretty cake. “I had been thinking a lot about how distressing it is that for some of our most vulnerable people, a basic like TP has been catapulted out of reach.” She added, “Plus I just wanted to see if I could make edible fondant fabric look more tissue-like.”

Lots of people are baking during this time (shout out to banana bread!), as they are stuck at home and need a distraction from all that’s going on in the world. And what could be more comforting than butter and carbs? “It’s a combination of procrasti-baking, seeking comfort in delicious and homey things, but also I think it’s a way for people to feel like they’re in control of something, when everything else feels so outside our personal control right now,” Kate explained.

This roll of toilet paper might not, ahem, be useable, but I’m sure it’s pretty tasty and was a joy to make.
