Name: Julieta Alvarez, her husband Bart, and daughter Olivia
Location: West New York, New Jersey
Size: 1065 square feet
Years lived in: Almost 3 years, renting

Julieta, of Julieta Alvarez Interiors, lives with her husband and daughter in a two-bedroom apartment in West New York, New Jersey — one quick, peaceful ferry ride away from the Manhattan peninsula. Julieta says it’s like “Battery Park City but much quieter and less commercial. I love the fact that I was the first one to move into this apartment, after living in a prewar building in NYC. It’s brand new and super clean. The view is absolutely stunning and I have New York views from every room, even the bathroom.”

The apartment is filled with beautiful light, especially in the morning, and has high ceilings and dark wooden floors. Julieta’s design inspiration comes from the places she visits on her travels, where she tries to buy local products such as frames, textiles, pillows and rugs. When designing here home, she also made a point to support small companies and shops on Etsy. She’s especially proud of how she got crafty with a few IKEA hacks, like the dresser in her daughter’s room with handmade leather pulls.

One of Julieta’s proudest creations is the gallery wall in the living room. It took over a year to complete because she wanted to take her time and collect meaningful art. Two of the paintings were done by very good friends, another is based on the design of her wedding invitation. The installation also includes framed wedding pictures, an antique convex mirror, antlers, a preserved butterfly, a mask from Bali, a framed napkin from Mexico, a wool weaving Julieta made, an antique racquet…and the list goes on.
