No matter whether you’re personally a fan of farmhouse chic style or not, you have to hand it to Laura Gibson: She’s a woman (and blogger) with a distinct style. And an attention to detail that customizes every inch of a plain home. The house she shares with her family didn’t start out this way three years ago; it’s taken a lot of DIY projects—from knocking out walls to even converting a garage into a living room—to transform this former rental space into the industrial farmhouse home of Laura’s dreams. It’s not completely finished yet (are homes ever really finished, though), but it sure has come a long way from where it started.

Laura shares the story of how she and her husband came to own this house:

“When I was 37 weeks pregnant, my husband and I sold our house rather quickly and we needed some place fast. This house was up for rent, so we made the quick decision to rent it, even though I HATED the house. It had been a rental for years and years, and it smelled that way. I was so upset because I didn’t want to bring a baby into this house, but the baby was coming, ready or not.

Through all of this however, my husband was falling in LOVE with the property the house was on, and was trying to talk me into purchasing this house. After a lot of tears and convincing, I agreed, and he PROMISED to turn it into what I wanted… and he kept his promise!

I wanted open spaces, a huge island/kitchen, and an entertaining space that others wanted to come to! Now we are always hosting and we have two little boys who love running around and playing!”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Industrial farmhouse chic.

Inspiration: Obviously Chip and Joanna, but also just things I think up!

Favorite Element: The island. It’s not just a place to prepare food, but a place where we gather and make memories!

Biggest Challenge: Storage! We utilize every inch of this house so storage is scarce. We try to create spaces and use furniture that helps with our storage issue.

Proudest DIY: The whole house was a DIY, so literally there was a lot of trial and error, and even some design mishaps that needed correcting.

Biggest Indulgence: Flooring. This is one of those design decisions that would be very hard to change (unlike paint or curtains), so we needed to make sure we made the right decision. Sometimes that means spending a little more…

Best Advice: Make your space your own! Trends are fun and are great inspiration, but you can always put your own twist on them!
