Trend Spotting: Rorschach-Inspired Inkblot Patterns

When Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach developed his namesake personality test, he probably didn't imagine his inkblot shapes decorating the walls of stylish homes almost 100 years later. But shapes taken directly from Rorschach (and others inspired by his inkblot style) are enjoying a bit of a moment, cropping up on art, wallpaper, and even plates. They have a certain creepy elegance to them — one part watercolor, one part insect, one part whatever you can imagine.

Above: You could make your own inkblot art with this DIY from Homelife.

These 'Rorschach' tiles are by Timorous Beasties for Cle Tile. Beautiful as an accent in a super-modern kitchen or bathroom... if you can ever stop staring at them to do anything else.

These inkblot plates feature shapes designed to look like animals. Butterfly and Rabbit, each £20.00 from Rockett St. George. (Also available in Fox and Horse.)

This Etsy shop sells prints (on dictionary paper) of the actual inkblot shapes used in Rorschach's test. Rorschach Ink Blot 4 Art Print, $6.50 from A Page in Time.

I'm obsessed with all the offerings from Eskayel, but my favorites are their watercolor-pretty takes on the inkblot. This 'Culebra Cubic' wallpaper is so lovely, but has just right amount of edge.

There's also a line of Eskayel furniture for ABC Carpet & Home, which includes the ottoman pictured above ($1,145).

The darker inkblot prints have a certain creepy glamour, but my favorites are the ones that add a little color, like this abstract watercolor painting, $41 from Obsessivision on Etsy.
