What happens when you bring together two of the most prolific and distinctive voices in kids' music? Amazing things. Dan Zanes and Elizabeth Mitchell are both generous and frequent collaborators with their kindie cohort, and the result of this joint effort is an awesome hootenanny for listeners of all ages.
Along with Mitchell's husband Daniel and daughter Storey (their family collective goes by the name You Are My Flower), Zanes and Mitchell explore traditional songs and new material. The album opens with a jubilant version of "Sail Away Ladies," an old timey classic that has never been quite so cheerful or fun. Other thoughtfully chosen American folk standards include "My Creole Belle" and "Train Is A Coming." One of the album's high points is a fresh take on Pete Seeger's "Turn Turn Turn" featuring lyrics written for young listeners by Seeger's wife, Toshi.
Zanes wrote five new songs for his collaboration with Mitchell, "Coney Island Avenue," "Now Let's Dance," "Hot Weather Music," "In the Sun," and "Shine," and Mitchell brought "Honeybee" to the table. The instrumentation is heavy on folky strings, with lots of satisfying mandolin, guitar, and ukelele. The sound is laid back, joyful, and great fun for the whole family.
