Ty Pennington’s Smart Tips on Adding Interest to an All-White Kitchen

If you’ve never seen Ty Pennington flip a kitchen with his design team, you are missing out. Just when you think he’s going to pull some typical color scheme you’ve seen before, he comes out surprising viewers on his new show, “Ty Breaker” on HGTV. And in a recent episode, Pennington showed how to go monochromatic with kitchen color choices while still allowing for contrast and visual interest.

In the series finale, a couple expressed to Pennington that they wanted a bright, white kitchen, but there’s always the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="risk%20of%20an%20all%20white%20kitchen%20feeling%20sterile%20instead%20of%20a%20<a%20href=" https: target="_blank">homey, vibrant place to prepare a meal. Things can look bland really quickly, so Pennington made a few design decisions to combat this from happening.

Pennington and his team opted for a “Cooper Brown” floor that contrasted with the white (fifth photo above). This wasn’t his only darker design choice — they landed on dark bronze hardware, and earthy tones were also integrated in a double-decker herb garden shelving system in front of a deeply silled window (pro tip: you can also choose clear shelving to prevent blocking light).

You can go all white without choosing pure white, too. Pennington and his team debated quartz versus granite countertops, but they ultimately landed on a beautiful gold and gray flecked quartz. You have to look a bit closer to realize the counter isn’t all-white, but when you view the room as a whole, it eliminates that sterile feel.

Finally, Pennington chose a more off-white bright gray paint for the walls that completed the vibrant and well-lit space the couple had dreamed of without too much white. Finishing details included a mosaic style white backsplash and that eye-popping miniature garden in the window.
