Valkee Blasts Light Via Ear Buds to Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder

I live with someone who suffers from SAD, seasonal affective disorder, and the symptoms in mood exhibited can be night and day. Fortunately for us, we live somewhere where sunshine is plentiful almost year around, and for those gray days, simply switching out the bulbs in our apartment and adding a full spectrum LED lamp have made a difference. But now there's a portable version which claims to offer a SAD treatment in just 10 minutes in earbud form...

Valkee looks like a bare bones digital audio player, down to the earbuds. But instead of blasting music into your ears, the device utilizes two super bright LEDs into your head from the inside out:

Valkee substitutes the mood-elevating effects of the sun, by channeling safe bright light directly to photosensitive regions of the brain through the ear canal. That's why Valkee increases energy, and can act as a preventative or treatment of mood swings. Valkee has CE Class II(a) medical device certification and is clinically tested.

Is it worth $240? I guess if we lived in the sun-deprived Pacific Northwest, the price wouldn't seem unreasonable (put it on each morning upon waking up and making coffee). We'd love to hear back from any readers who have tried the device themselves!
