Design inspiration can arise from unlikely places. The television show, Rescue Me, constructs dramatic characters and attention-grabbing dialogue but I can't say that I regularly gather style concepts from watching New York City's bravest battle fires (and each other). But while viewing a recent episode I caught a glimpse of an interesting idea for interior columns…

In the opening scene Sheila and Tommy are talking in her kitchen but in the background there are columns wrapped in wallpaper. The columns were smartly decorated with a repeating botanical pattern, almost Art Nouveau in style — a nice complement to her richly decorated apartment with its intense colors and textures. Had the columns been solid in color (like we normally see) they may have disappeared in the space or, worse, stood out too much and cause too much distraction. I found this non-traditional wallpaper application a great way to add decoration to an architectural element.
