"When we first moved in, our bathroom was COVERED in flowers," reports Kathy Davies, a wedding and portrait photographer. She and her husband, James Binder, bought this 1950s tri-level house in Michigan two years ago and have slowly been remodeling parts of it. She continues describing what an outdated nightmare the small bathroom was when they purchased the house: "The floor, the curtains, the wallpaper... and not a pretty modern type of floral pattern. It was a terrible, yellowish, old-looking floral pattern. It also smelled like fish haha. This was our first major DIY and is now one of my favorite rooms in the house!"
Kathy had fallen in love with a photo of white hexagon tile, and that's where the room's design starts, with wall tile and floor tile from Virginia Tile.
"Since we spent a good amount on the tile, we tried to do a lot ourselves," Kathy explains. "Poor James had to have one of the hardest patterns for his first time, thanks to me. James ended up doing ALL of the tile work by himself. He watched Youtube videos and took his time. Our family friend used to own a tile business, so he had a lot of tools we needed, and that helped out a lot."
Handy dads FTW
"I knew I wanted a warm wood vanity to make the room not so sterile. I had found a storage piece from West Elm and my dad being the handy man he is, cut an inch off the back, made the legs longer, and drilled a big hole in the top to make the sink fit. It looks exactly like my vision and I couldn't be happier! I also wanted brass accents in the room to warm it up."
Super SMALL sized
"This bathroom was also really hard because of the size. I'm already picky and I was searching so many sites to not only find what I wanted, but to find it in the right size. ...The last thing was a toilet; we had to find an extra small toilet. If we had a normal-sized one, people would be hitting their knees on the wall!"
In the end...
All in all, I am so so happy with everything. I would definitely say the biggest challenge was the size, and the fact that i'm so picky :)"
