We’re Seeing this Dramatic, Retro Living Room Trend Everywhere—Are You?
Waterfall edges are having a moment right now, and they’re not just reserved for fancy islands in designer kitchens. Regular pieces of living room furniture—albeit super stylish ones like consoles, coffee tables, and benches—are starting to rock this curved, cascading silhouette, and it’s a good thing. Not only can you easily fit poufs, baskets, and your other belongings underneath these dramatically arched forms, the waterfall edge is also visually nice to look at.
Unlike their kitchen countertop counterparts, many waterfall edges on tables and benches have softer corners, and anything curvy is always easy on the eyes. For proof, just look at the gorgeous custom burl wood waterfall table the design firm The Collective Dallas whipped up for their client above. They’re ultra modern, but like most things in design, when it comes to the waterfall, what’s old is new again.
According to designer Beverly Solomon, this silhouette is essentially a reboot of benches and side tables from the 1970s and 1980s, which tracks with what’s going on in design in general right now. That said, the waterfall edge still feels very current. It’s a nice echo, design-wise, of all the arched forms and curved sofas and doorways we’re starting to see pop up in interiors, too. Waterfall tables work well in minimalist settings, and when constructed out of acrylic as seen in the house tour above, they add visual lightness to a room.
