It’s pretty easy to throw some clothes in a bag and drop them off at a thrift store. It’s the hernia-inducing hauls that I put off. But this weekend, instead of focusing on unwanted dishes or shoes, think of that one large thing you don’t need that’s just taking up space — like a piece of furniture, the grand piano that you never play, bulky sports equipment, or even a large collection of books — and either donate it, sell it, or give it to a friend.

This Weekend’s Assignment: Get rid of one large thing you don’t need or want that’s just taking up space.

Decide If You Will Keep It: This is pretty much the same process you go through with clothing and smaller items. How do you know when to let it go? Ask yourself the tough questions. Is there space for it, or is it a space hog? Do you use it? Do you really love it?

Now Get Rid of It: Once you’ve decided, there are all sorts of options, depending on the item. If it’s valuable and you have the time to spare, try selling it through Craigslist or eBay. Otherwise, take it immediately to Goodwill, or arrange for it to be picked up and hauled out of your home.

Remember, as with all of our Weekend Projects, just do what you have the time and energy to do. And hey, if you don’t feel like moving a heavy piano, choose one of our other weekend projects to get done.
