Pedal Co-Op Recycling: Pedaling To Philadelphia Perfection

We've talked about recycling on Apartment Therapy for quite a while now; and we aren't planning on stopping any time soon. Especially when small Co-Op's are sprouting up all over the place to help us do the right thing.

Pedal Co-Op is a worker-run organization that offers environmentally friendly recycling-by-bicycle and composting to local businesses and residences in Philadelphia. They currently transport compost to local gardens in West Philly and the recyclables to Blue Mountain Recycling (the only single stream recycling center in Philadelphia) using trailers attached to bicycles.

We've seen members of the Pedal Co-Op riding up and down Grays Ferry Avenue (the busy street that Blue Mountain Recycling is located on) in South Philadelphia (we happen to live a stones throw away). We were always curious as to what they were doing; we certainly had an idea, but didn't realize the clientele was so large.

John MacDuffie Woodburn is the brain behind the operation, and has recruited other cyclists in the city to help out with the brawn. According to their website, there are currently six members &mdash but they always appreciate more volunteers. Visitors to the website can also make donations or email them to inquire about their services.
