Chances are good that you’ve seen rubber flooring in a school, or a commercial building, or at your gym, but we’re here to make the case for why you should consider it as a choice for your home, too. We’ve rounded up plenty of inspiring photos of rubber floors in the home, along with seven things you might not have known about this incredibly durable, hardwearing material.

5. It doesn’t have to have that bumpy texture.
A lot of rubber floors (like the one pictured below) have that pattern of raised circles, which helps make the floor more slip-resistant. But if you don’t love the bumps, or it just feels a little too industrial to you, there are plenty of other options, like the rubber floor pictured above from Dalsouple.

4. It’s durable and lasts a really long time.
Rubber is pretty much impossible to dent or scratch, and can last for 20 years or more. It is, however, suceptible to grease stains, and needs to be waxed periodically to make it more resistant to damage and discoloration.

3. It’s a great sound insulator.
Rubber has excellent sound insulation qualities, which makes it a great choice for an apartment, or just anywhere that you want to be kind of quiet.

2. It comes in pretty much any color you can imagine.
If you love the idea of a bright yellow floor, or a white one, or even a rainbow one, that can happen with rubber.

1. It can actually be kind of expensive.
According to this post at Kitchn, higher quality rubber flooring can range in price from $12 to $15 a square foot, making it comparable in price to wood flooring.
