When we think of hiring an interior designer for help with a home styling project, most of us imagine walking through our space, pointing out our particular tricky challenges and hearing an in-person evaluation of our job. No more. In our Facetime world, a new (or, new-to-me) service has emerged and I'm not sure how I feel about it: eDesign.
I recently read this article in the Boston Globe about designer Dina Holland and her remote design services. Clients send her photos and measurements of their space and discuss their design requirements, and Holland plans and coordinates their makeover. She guides them to certain retailers she thinks will work for their aesthetic, and farms out work to vendors in their area. Then she makes specific suggestions about exactly where and how to place the new items.
It almost seems like a cross between hiring a traditional designer and just enlisting the help your college roommate or your sister-in-law who really has a knack for design and knows all the good sources. In other words, it's for people who have some basic skills but need someone to offer guidance and act as a sounding board. And, of course, going the eDesign route is much less expensive than the traditional client/designer relationship because clients do much of the legwork themselves, which, depending on their needs, could be a pro or a con.
