As part of the Color Month festivities on Apartment Therapy, I thought we could look back on the times when color has played an important role in our favorite fictional characters' homes and lives on the big and small screen...
Red: Sex & The City, Season 3 Episode 18
Big: So tell me, is red a mistake?
Carrie: In what way?
Big: I'm repainting my bedroom.
Carrie: A red bedroom?
Big: Just one wall. But I think it's too red. It's like sleeping in communist China.
Carrie, later: Because, dear friend, you and I are like that red wall. It's a good idea in theory, but somehow it doesn't quite work.
Beige: Sex & The City, Season 3 Episode 9
Carrie: Where's your wife?
Big: Guarding her bid on a silent acution. She's got her eye on a beige chair. Everything in my apartment is now beige. Beige, is bull s**t.
Carrie: I thought you wanted beige?
Big: Yea, well, it doesn't quite fit.
Purple: Friends, Season 4 Episode 12
Monica: Rach, can you give me a hand with this box?
Rachel: No! Put that box down. We are not going anywhere! This is my apartment, and I like it. This is a girls' apartment! That is a boys' apartment: it's dirty and it smells! This one is pretty, it's so pretty. And look- it's purple!
Purple: Gilmore Girls, Season 4 Episode 5
Sookie: Remember all the other designers we met that we didn't like before Natalie? Remember the one that wanted to put the tiny mannequin in every room so that the lonely people would have someone to talk to?
Lorelai: Yes, I do.
Sookie: Or the purple, purple, purple guy.
Lorelai: Purple, purple, purple!
Yellow: The Yellow Wallpaper*
Narrator: It is the strangest yellow, that wall-paper! It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever saw – not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old foul, bad yellow things. But there is something else about that paper – the smell! ... The only thing I can think of that it is like is the color of the paper! A yellow smell.
*Can anyone tell me if this quote was also in the movie, or just the book?
Yellow: How I Met Your Mother, Season 7 Episode 6
Lily: This is exciting. I give you the color our child will grow up with: yellow, like the sun. Marshall: Or daughter. Pun snuggle!
(Later, Robin and Barney want to tell Marshall and Lily the sex of the baby)
Marshall: It doesn't matter what you say, we're not going to cave.
Lily: Yes, we are. Just open your eyes! This gender-neutral color is horrible. We're clearly going to paint over the whole thing.
Marshall: Should we do this?
Lily: My soul says "No" but these hideous yellow walls scream "Yes".
I'm obviously missing a ton more: help me out! Scenes from books would be very much appreciated, as well.
