Name: Zeb (4)
Location: Newcastle, NSW, Australia

I run an interior design business specialising in children's bedroom (Ali Joy Interiors) so when it came to design my own son's "big boy room", it is fair to say I was excited! As with all my clients, I like to get some information from the child themself as they are the one that has to live in the room so it is important that they absolutely love it!

Zeb told me he wanted somewhere he could do some craft and there had to be dinosaurs and superheros. His favourite colours of yellow and red also had to feature. My desires was that this room was practical and could easily see him through to his teenage years (sob!) without any major changes.

Zeb's room is quite Scandi and minimalist - fitting in with my plans for the rest of the house. The pops of colour adds to the playful nature of childhood and fits Zeb's personality to a tee. As I'm quite handy with a sewing machine, there are a lot of DIY and handmade items as well as some op-shop bargains.

Those who follow me on Instagram and Facebook, would recognise my monster cushion and Batman pillowcase. I teamed that with a matching Batman quilt cover I also made. The bed itself, was actually my husband's bed growing up and it is wonderful that he could pass it down to his son.

I have an obsession with storage so having bedside table with drawers was a must! And these drawers have generous space as well as looking oh-so stylish AND in Zeb's requested colour!! The gold skull is a favourite of Zeb's and has storage inside for little trinkets. The robot was a lucky op-shop buy one day when I only went in to get out of the rain. I saw and fell in love! It works and came in its original box - for $7!!

The wooden dinosaur was the one spurlge item in the room (and the only item that is over $100!). It was a challenge putting him together however it was worth the band-aid fingers as Zeb is nuts about it.

And of course, my favourite part of Zeb's room - his chalkboard paint wall! I must admit I kept this piece of information from him for the first few months however it is now a great way for him to express his creative side.

As with most of my clients, the final result of this room took about 5 months to come together, purchasing an item at a time from an original design board plan. I loved seeing the room slowly come together and Zeb adores his new room. I find when a child loves their room, they take more care of it, and this is true in my case. Zeb's room is a fine example, that you don't need to spend a fortune for a stylish and modern room!
