Name: Kristen Ellis
Location: Pike Place Market — Seattle, Washington
My apartment is located in the heart of the world famous Pike Place Market. The apartment is a studio and is approximately 125 square feet. The building in which it is located was originally built in 1907 and offered housing to the fisherman who needed a temporary place to stay while on shore. The building has a roof top balcony that not only overlooks the Market but the Puget Sound, Mt. Rainer and the Olympic Mountains.
My inspiration for this design was to challenge myself in the aspect of color. I believe that the use of colors has become an ordinary expectation in the world of interiors. I decided to take a non-color and make it as vibrant and timeless as traditional color palettes seen today. Though white is often referred to as "cold," my ultimate goal was to bring warmth to my small space using mostly white.
Now, in the dark winters of Seattle gloominess, I wake up in the mornings with a sense of lightness; almost that which could be compared to fresh linens hanging on a line in the summer breeze. Another Inspiration was reusing things that had a rococo style but adding a modern twist.
ABOUT THE SPACE
Upon entering, one might ask themselves, "how does someone occupy such little space without going crazy, developing clausterphobic tendencies, or store anything for that matter?"
I am a minimalist. My girlfriends often ask me how I function with just a few outfits in my closet — yet I always seem to be dressed differently. My apartment is like my wardrobe. Each and every item I choose to purchase for my little piece of heaven has been thoroughly thought through. Though I would love to purchase that gorgeous chaise-lounge from the local antique store and put it in my window, I refrain. I always ask myself, "is this functional? What can I use this for (literally)?"
The antique trunk I purchased at a local thrift holds all my blankets, books, sheets, pillows, memoribilia and winter coats. My silverware is placed in an old porcelain jar and my dishes are displayed on the bookcase I designed and crafted myself from wood. Pots and pans are strategically placed on my walls on antique hooks and a magnetic strip holds my cooking utensils. I built the shelves over the Kitchen to display the TV and all my glasses. I designed and built the bed from car mufflers that were welded together to create the frame and a foam mattress for the top.
ABOUT ME
My name is Kristen Ellis and I am a twenty-two year old freelance Interior Designer that just recently graduated with a BFA in Interior Design and Architecture. My plans are to leave this March to move to Eastern Europe for the Peace Corps. And my goal is to someday work with Philippe Stark!

White Enamel Four-P...
Looks nice and clean, but too boring for my tastes. I could never live there, kudos to you!
Beautiful! Prime example of how one doesn't need a lot of stuff to be happy. I love the trunk!
And you don't suffer from low self esteem!
I like it. But, I guess you don't do much cooking eh? Or, do you have a burner hiding somewhere? It's clean and bright. Does your dog like being in such a small space?
Stupendous. Miraculous. I love it! What are you going to do in the Peace Corps with a degree in interior design?
clausterphobic?
Your apartment is a great example of how a shot of colour makes a great statement and has more impact then if the room was full of accessories in the same hue. Great job.
Amazing what you have done in such a small space, it really looks spacious.
My, aren't you pleased with yourself!
Thank god you have that chartreuse throw. It's the only thing that's keeping your apartment from looking like a set from a movie about the dystopic future, where happiness is against the law.
this is a clear definition for scandinavian(typically norwegian) style of decor...had learned from an artist that the pale or monochromatic colour scheme bordering towards a cool vibe is all about scandinavian art...:)...you made a small place look so livable and spacious...however, i could get too bored here:)
Yikes! I don't think I could do that, plus it looks like a store front!
impressive. i could live in the tiny space but i know i couldn't handle all of the white. my question is...no pillow?
Whatever happen to appreciating (the artistry of) a choice even if it isn't the one you wouldn't make for yourself? It's a lovely small space. Period.
I really like the calm and sense of light in the space. And I'm in admiration that someone can be that neat and tidy all the time. This is a lesson in how the careful choice of what goes into a space can make a huge difference.
I wish we could see the rest of the studio--there has to be a closet and bathroom somewhere in there? I think there is a burner on top of the fridge, in front of the bottles? But where do you work? There's no table or other workspace, which must be limiting as a freelancer.
Gee, nasty comments.
I really love these super-small space posts...it's so amazing to see how people overcome the obstacle in different ways.
House tour please!
You live right at Pike Place Market? Well, no wonder you can live so minimally. Everyday you can walk out the door and buy fresh produce for dinner that night. I bet you can walk to work and almost anywhere for anything you need. Plus Seattle has nice, mild winters so you can spend a lot of time out of doors year round. Kudos for living simple and appreciating everything you have!
is that really your dog? white space, black dog... sounds dangerous. although i guess with a small space it's much easier to keep clean.
i like the white frames within white frames
Love the bust and the rug (in fact I have the same rug...such a great bargain). The bed is way too "jail cell chic" for my taste. I'm impressed with the careful editing and the feminine touches, but the lack of bedding and all the white makes it feel a bit cold to me.
That is a big dog for such a tiny space. He/she is gorgeous.
And the room is quite lovely too. It seems more like an art installation than a home but for something temporary--excellent work.
And you're far from the first designer to send in their space for horn-tooting purposes, so I don't get why people are being so hard on you.
But that said, I have to agree with lauramacheca--not even one little pillow?
Your place is fabulous! And you sound like a very interesting an accomplished young lady. (I'm sensing a lot of jealousy in the above comments, by the way. Sad.)
P.S. I love that you have a black dog in a white space. :)
What I like is there was no fear to experiment a vision and go for it, really it could all be changed out by spray painting it all in black but then you would need to get a white dog ;).
I think its fun, why not.
All white with a black dog? That's not very practical. I would like to see a floor plan of the whole studio with the bathroom and everything. I don't quite believe the 125 sqft. I guess maybe if the room is 10x10 with a 5x5 bathroom, but where is the closet?
Well, I can't say I like it much....very sterile. I can also understand why there have been snarky comment. She comes across as arrogant. Not her intention, I'm sure, but none-the-less, the result. And her spelling is atrocious!
@ Deeliscious and ljgfromof, I don't know what all the snark is about. This is (a very young) woman who obviously takes pride in her space and is excited about her future. Deal with it without the meanness, please.
It's interesting that such creative/artsy/interior design junkies can't accept an aesthetic other than their own. Very interesting, indeed. I think the space LOOKS beautiful, sans expression of whether it would work for me. Great job creating a well-appointed home that you feel cozy and creative in.
it's like Paris Hilton's jail cell, if she had been able to redecorate while she was in the clink.
Wow, the snarky comments never cease to amaze me. I completely agree with MsDonnaGirl-there's constructive criticism and then there's a return to the playground. This is ridiculous.
I actually really love the space and wish I could live an uncluttered life like that. I suspect she doesn't have pillows because her bed is also being used as her sofa. I call for a full house tour!
Y'all mad, huh?
Keeping in mind that this is just 125 ft. That's how big my bedroom is. And yet her entire life is in this space. And all you guys can do is rag on the size and the fact that she isn't...what, ashamed of herself for living in such a tiny space? This site has gone far from its roots indeed.
Love it, LOVE it, LOVE IT!!! U R a genius!
Minimalist living is something we all need to incorporate more of into our lives... Is that ironic? Anyway, joining the peace corp is a great way to give back, see how others live and to wait out the draught in design work. If she ever wants to bring in more color to her life, she has set up a great base to do so. This is her white period.
All you need is padded walls and a straightjacket...and you are good to go!
I guess I'm not the minimalist I thought I was :)
I'm happy to see such a small space with even a bit of "real"/decorative furniture. My studio has no stove or closet and the living area is only 9' x 8', so no furniture beyond a futony-sofa, folding table (open & nested inside a bookshelf), a folding chair and tiny side table.
I've arranged my wire shelves to create a wall of storage and I've expanded that by buying some ikea cabinets to top the shelves.
I could probably pare down to this studio provided I had enough closet space.
Also, the white here looks refreshing and is enhanced by the reflective accessories. My lease has stuck me with dark tan walls I can't paint.
Oy, snarky comments. While it's not for me, I can really appreciate the aesthetic you've created here! Looks straight out of a magazine.
I've always been curious about the minimalist lifestyle. What exactly is the motivation behind it? Eco-friendliness, a feeling of "lightness", anti-consumerism? What I don't understand is.. what do minimalists do for fun.. or hobbies? Most hobbies take up some amount of space (outdoor enthusiasts have their gear, seamstresses have their sewing supplies, bookworms have their books, etc.).
Where do these sorts of things fit into a minimalist's lifestyle? Or is minimalism also about eliminating those and living as small as possible? Just curious.
Even though there's no so much color, I found lots of texture to get fun with! I definitely loved it!
Yvette, I don't think people are saying she should be "ashamed" for the lack of space she has. How did you come up with that interpretation?
However, it's true that she comes off as very proud. "Upon entering, one might ask themselves..." "Yet I always seem to dress differently...." "Every item I chose to purchase for my little piece of heaven..." Come on.
I'm also a 22 year old who just graduated with a BFA in Interior Design and Architecture. Being a minimalist is nothing special- "less is more" is drilled into our heads from the first day of studio to the last. She sounds as though she were the first person in the world to work in white.
I think it's really impressive on so many levels. First of all, she's a young designer who's developed/developing her own signature style and isn't afraid to experiment in her own home. Second, she young and living in what almost looks like an efficiency unit/converted SRO. Maybe her life isn't cluttered with "stuff" yet. It's not how my clients (or I) live, but I still think it's amazing to see what she's done with 125 square feet. This space could get cluttered really easily, but she keeps it clean and spare.
I think this looks amazing. You've done a fantastic job - the place oozes style. You seem like a talented, motivated, intelligent young woman - ignore some of these comments.
I sincerely hope this is a friend's dog, because I really hope the poor thing isn't sentenced to live in a cage. No matter how much exercise s/he may get...
Snark, snark, snarkety snark! LOL! This is a little too cold and white for my tastes but it is interesting!
I Jealous!
Wow. I am impressed - I couldn't live so minimally, nor could I keep such a white apartment clean. I like the pop of color from the blanket and the rug. I also really like that silver bust - pretty cool. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the Peace Corps! :)
I think it's really beautiful! I have a black lab as well and they shed so much. How do you keep your place free of fur? I go through with the broom or vacuum and as soon as I am done I'm already finding more dog hair that he's shedding. I don't think I could do so much white because I hate housework. The dog hair hides better with lots of colors :)
@pier723
In the center picture, above the microfridge, you can see two knobs for the stovetop. Guess she actually has two burners! Such luxury! But maybe only one pan? :)
She just graduated; am pretty sure she is working on selling herself. Generally it is seen as a useful skill to have; you don't stand out by being particularly modest or by acknowledging how non-revolutionary you are.
I like the textural elements. Though I don't really think a tour is necessary, since she's already given us most of the resource list and we'd only need a shot of her bathroom and closet....
I think this is beautiful. I'd be incapable of living in an all white environment, though I'm no slob, I'm just one of those people who'd have it looking a bit grubby. So I'm very impressed.
As for the 125 sq ft. I've been looking at a lot of japanese interiors lately and I have to say, although some of them lacked style, they had clever use of space. I'm always amazed at the single folk on this site with full size fridge/freezers and catering size stoves!! I'd really love to shed some of my worldly 'stuff' but sometimes that's the luxury of the childless and single... I dream on....
I want to comment about the sentiment that this space is too small for the homeowner's dog.
C'mon, dogs don't care about the size of the homestead! In a mansion, you would still find the dog curled up near its owner.
If this beautiful dog gets long, daily walks with it's owner, I can tell you he is much more happy than many of the dogs in my tony suburb, whose owners think that because they have a 10,000sf house and a huge backyard, the dog gets enough exercise and therefore needs few or no walks. Even after school, the dogs stand at the fence and bark, because the kids are inside instead of playing out in the yard.
Dogs need adventures, like people! The rest of the time the well-walked puppers just sleep, gearing up for next outing. The size of the homestead is irrelevant.
manditra,
Probably because to me, this place looks about the same as a lot of other white minimalist spaces I've seen featured, only about 10 times smaller.
I can't figure out what people are clutching the pearls over. And yeah, she sounds pleased with herself, but no more pleased than anyone else featured here.
Where are the books!
It's definitely a personal taste thing, but I don't think I could live without my favorite books being within reach. Sometimes, the library is closed, and a girl needs to rest her heart with some lovely literature.
Enjoyed reading the comments. I understand the snarkiness of some people, the article kinda sound like a cover letter ;) But I guess she's just proud of what she's done and the way she lives.
Good job on living so minimally!
I think this is a really cool and interesting space. I'm surprised about all the bitchy comments, especially the really snarky remark from Deelicious -- wow, you're a real piece of work. So what is she is pleased with herself? She is 22 and full of enthusiasm for life. Why, exactly, does that irritate you? As for dogs in small spaces, they are absolutely fine as long as they get plenty of exercise. My in-laws dog has a whole bungalow to roam but he never moves from his cushion and has no use for the backyard. All he cares about is two good walks a day.
Having now seen the long shot of the whole space, the one thing I'm curious about is lighting. The only light appears to be the overhead chandelier. I think soft, indirect lighting would be the key to making this room work at night. Otherwise, it would very stark.
No Eames chair, clearly not good design ;)
I think the lack of crap is FABULOUS and that you must have that footlocker full of Mr Clean Magic Erasers to keep it looking that pristine!
To me it feels like a set but in a designed way. But I think it is lovely to look at and admire. Just for my personal living I couldn't have all that white - I'm a mess. However, a mess with a little OCD so the black hair on the white would make me crazy. I would like to see a house tour to see how you live in this small space without having anything out in the open.
Very nice! :) I admire people who can pull off all-white - it always looks so nice to me, but I have fear of it and whenever I attempt it, I end up interjecting color all over the place.
It's like a modern day Breakfast at Tiffany's on a smaller scale, I love the tiny kitchen.
I love it. Good for you. I live in a small space and love that it takes just minutes to clean the place, and then I can get on with my life. You must feel the same way.
OMG you even have a dog in there. I like it, it's not for me, but if it works for you what's not to be proud of. To all the snipers, what have you done lately, except snipe, we can all do that.
It is so clean and bright! You have done a great job with such a small space. Good luck with the Peace Corps.
People really live like this? I'm not being intentionally obtuse, I just don't get how this is remotely feasible for any length of time.
It's very pretty, though. Good luck to you.
At first one may think this is all too precarious and fussy, but honestly it's ballsy and I love it. Who the hell cares if you would find it difficult to live in - no one's asking you to! If she's comfortable then all the power to her for pulling off something so fabulous!
Looks like the laboratory where Splice II might be filmed. Not my style, but can appreciate the minimalism. But honestly, I think she needs to get over herself a bit; I mean "little piece of heaven etc. etc. etc. Good lord.
I personally loved ljgfromof's comment.
Maybe this is stirring the pot, but could this possibly be a satirical post? The ridiculousness of the writing made me laugh.
Doesn't it seem like it was written and done as a sterotype of what a 22 yr old self important design student would do? All white tiny space, ridiculousness, self absorption?
Welding together car mufflers (on her own) to make the bed? Am i the only person that knows what a muffler looks like?
"fresh linens hanging on a line in the summer breeze." Seriously? Seriously?
If the post is real and genuine - congrats on the space, but please bear in mind as you navigate the real world after college that tone and humility are extremely important. I wouldn't hire someone no matter how fantastic the space was based on the narcissism of the writing alone.
snarky mcsnarkerson!
this is so insulting to a person who has opened their home to people....probably to inspire people.
my home was featured on a tour this year, and i found the insulting comments appalling. i actually couldn't believe that people felt the need to do that.
i think your space is great. good luck in the peace corps and in design. don't let jealous and snarkers get in your way. they're plentiful.
Well, if you can live THIS minimalistically, I think it's because you are just starting out and haven't had the opportunity to collect anything yet. (Report back AFTER the Peace Corps when you live in a foreigh land and have native crafts available as souvenirs and treasures!!)
I think you probably achieved the "warm white" effect you went for -- although it does sound a bit like a school assignment that you gave yourself as opposed to choosing the way you wanted to live and addressing it as you would for a client.
All that said, I'd go nuts in that blizzard of a space. I need more color and I definitely don't want to keep all that starkness spotless! More power to you, though!
I agree with joydreamz. Exhaust system pipe to build the bed frame, maybe. Mufflers, not so much. I know what mufflers look like ... I've had enough fall off my cars while living on the farm in Michigan.
Do you cook often? I would love to sneak a peek at your "minimalist" wardrobe!
Again, I'm absolutely shocked by the level of snarkiness in these comments. Wow. I actually reread the post to see if there was *anything* that could be construed as offensive. The only thing I could come up with is that people are offended by self-confidence??? If that's the case, I find that really, really unbelievably sad.
For the record, I wish that all young people were as enthusiastic and confident as Kristen. I think the post is totally charming. Maybe it's a mom thing. We love it when kids turn out to be ambitious go-getters instead of lazy, snarky slackers.
Lol. Has no one here lived in a dorm? I'm assuming she has a private rest room, if so, she's got 1 up on thousands of kids currently in school. I think it's fantastic. Although I would have gone for mounting the tv over the trunk and using the space above the sink for something else.
I think this is a very mature space for a 22 year-old. Thank you for opening your home to us.
People can go into the Peace Corps with NO formal education. If you are willing to learn quickly and work hard, you will be placed. Some sites do have needs for specialized training ahead of time. But I would imagine with this girl's imagination and maturity, she'll do just fine wherever she is placed-- hats off to her for already practicing minimalist living and not getting too attached to "stuff."
I don't get the snark, either. I don't get why people have to make personal attacks about the people who open their homes to us. I don't see anything wrong with anything she said in her description about her home, her life, her passions, or her aspirations. She knows what she wants, and she is disciplined, and this is reflected in her life choices and in her aesthetic. I find that admirable.
you are GREAT. but...wheres the loo? sorry =p=)
Wow, very interesting comments directed at this young lady.
Well, I think you did a fine job. Good luck to you with your future career plans.
Bravo! How refreshing to see someone not bogged down with so much "stuff"! I totally respect your ability to edit! In 10 years you might be in a totally different situation so enjoy this while it lasts! How freeing.
When you live in a busy urban area you don't need a large living space.
Ignore these nasty comments! I don't think it sounds arrogant. We are all proud of our places and anyone who reads this blog must be putting a lot of thought into their spaces also! I know I am!
Way to show that you can be satisfied and proud of a small space.
I don't understand how people can't fathom living in a space this small. How big are dorm rooms?
to be frank i find this "minimalist" trend to be a bunch of bull. to me being choosy about what you put into a 125 sq ft studio isn't "minimal" it's common sense. i live in a 325 sq ft studio and i don't fill it with unnecessary furniture and items, but i wouldn't go around calling making practical decisions my "minimalist lifestyle." ugh.
that aside i adore this studio. i love the idea of white walls, white furniture, with a pop of color. this is similar to what i have in mind for my next apartment. i see white as being bright and airy, and love how it can transform a space and bring so much light in. in a space that small i think you'd need it.
i'm also partial to using a trunk to store bedding and what not because i do the same.
some people are wondering how she can live in a space like that, but i'm wondering how you could live above pike place market (living in a tourist town already there's no way i could live above a major tourist destination) and how much that studio costs...
Wow, people are being obnoxious here. Self-confidence is suddenly a crime? Sounds like there's a lot of jealousy there. Sad.
Love the blanket chest and the graduated design of the shelves. I'd probably leave the blankets and pillows on the bed rather than put them back in the chest each day, but I have a weird hangup about bare beds.
First off, too much snark! You all are entitled to your opinions, but that doesn't mean that you need to express those opinions in such a negative way, and in a place where the subject can read them.
Kristen sure loves white! And she's proud of designing/making her bed frame, and her bookcase. Isn't AT full of posts by people who are proud of their DIYs? And that artwork above the trunk is GORGEOUS! I doubt, in this imaginary dystopian future we're hurtling towards, personal artwork like that will be allowed.
She may not have expressed herself very well in the write-up, but the space has obviously been well-planned, and she has carefully selected items she loves. So, she wins!
Finally, this reminds me of the "smallest [not really] Manhattan condo" that was featured a while back, from a NYT article. A lot of people were really harsh on the couple who lived there, about the decisions they'd made to downsize, and dry clean their clothes, and eat out a lot... They chose to live in a ridiculously small space because it had an awesome location. This is kinda the same deal. To live right in Pike Place Market is amazing, and you don't need a full kitchen, or tons of stuff. There's endless awesome fresh food, and entertainment, and places to walk your dog, even off-leash areas, within a few blocks. For some people, that's heaven. It's not that hard to go without a full-sized refrigerator, six-burner commercial stove, two-car garage, etc.
(Go Seattle!)
I'd need a reading lamp.
I think it's beautiful and very impressive. The writing didn't bother me at all; I think you should be proud of yourself, although the first part did sound like you cut and paste it from a school project. But still, who cares. I was wondering if there was any seating beyond the bed, though. It doesn't look like you could see the TV from the bed, and if you have to stand to watch it, why have it?
I think it's great you're joining the Peace Corps, what an honorable use of your time and talents. Good luck with all of your endeavors!
Serene and elegant, though I think the light or the pictures make it look colder than you suggest it is. Perhaps it looks more cozy in real life.
But I have to agree with others that it looks like a store window or a hotel room (though what hotel wouldn't let you have sheets and a blanket?) But to each her own. I think it's admirable that you are able to live in a small space and with a minimum of 'stuff'. I'm surprised so many people are deploring that ethos--I thought AT was all about helping us streamline our lives?
I'm always so shocked at how OVERLY critical..judgemental and ignorant the comments are.
I don't think true creative/artistic people do that to each others work. This room was designed to make her feel a certain way as she lives in it...it's not presented for me to dumb it down into something that would fit MY life. I study it..appreciate it and learn from it.
Simply Brilliant!
I think it's really interesting and even though it's a 180 from my personal aesthetic, I like and appreciate what Kristen has done. If it makes you happy, girl, that's what matters.
And I will HAPPILY welcome your precious pup into my home while you're in the Peace Corps! (That face!) That picture is just lovely.
I think this space is wonderful and I hope all goes well with the Peace Corps :)
Black dog, white living space... now that's worth 100 points anyday! KUDOS!!
amazing!! love it. how do you keep it so minimal? i have too much junk.
Neat space but more what an awesome attitude. You just don't need more stuff to be happy. You also live in one of the coolest places on earth so who would want to hang out at home all the time with that at your doorstep!
reminds me of the "white box" episode of absolutely fabulous, all that's missing are the hanging objects in the middle of the room that Patsy gets tangled up in.
It's neat and nicely appointed, but that stark white would torture me and my eyes. Honestly, i wonder how happy the dog is being there; is the doggie a tenant there as well? If so, I hope the walks are REALLY long!
Good luck in the Peace Corps, and watch out for those eastern European mens. I'm eastern European, so I can say that.
OMG - -why is everyone being so mean? If it isn't your taste, either be polite about it or shut up. Here -- let me show you all how to do it.
I'm not a big fan of the all white, but damn, I admire the committment and the obvious flair for style that went into this place.
I am in the process of moving to Seattle and all I can say is that location is well worth the tiny space. And the doggie has a large park with lots of ducks to chase nearby, so everyone just chill about that.
I love this place. As I have gotten older, I've downsized. It's hard to for me as I love things. Once I did, I no longer live for my things. I love this place. There is enough color going on outside your door that I love an all white interior. Textures start to pop. I'd live in this place. You are a gem kiddo, and best to you with the Peace Corp. You're a good egg. By the way I own a Phillipe Starke Bubble Club Sofa that sits on my back porch. He rocks. Loved his night club in Dallas in the early 80's
I'm really impressed with this space. I really can't complain about my 900 square-foot house now. And I'm super jealous at your proximity to the market! I have nothing like that where I live, save a few months precious months in the summer.
And one only needs one burner and one pan to make a great meal... I remember that from my dorm days! =) I'm sure that she is also out and about often: gathering ideas, visiting the park, walking her dog... the city is the rest of her house, so to speak.
I read the entire article and am personally having a hard time finding the contrived, arrogant tone others have mentioned. Perhaps that means I too am arrogant because I don't see anything wrong with what she said? Congrats to you, Kristen, for having a space you love and can be proud of.
Dream BIG!! Best of luck to you in your career! Your space is very ethereal and classy!
whoa, so many nasty comments!
love what you did with the space and it absolutely fits a unique purpose... not all of us can afford huge apartments in which to enjoy designing and cooking all day!
for a student, the size and design is great -- I really take your point about white as color to heart. it's the way I'm going with my new apartment, and it really makes a difference in the way the room keeps the light (and an actual sense of "lightness").
Kudos for such a great job/good luck with the PC! Can't wait to see where you land when you return to design work :)
Love
Kristen,
AH-MAZING space. Absolutely love it. Hard-core, cut throat clutter editing and fabulous interior design skills.
Sounds like you are already well on your way to your dreams of working with Philippe Stark! Good luck in Peace Corps :)
Hello people she lives in a market should she bring the noise, colors, smells, funk and madness into a 125 sqft space with a dog? I imagine both she and the dog find it quite serene when the return home. I would love to love this space but I have not reached the point of wanting to get rid of that much stuff plus its not a life style that is practical for everyone.
I do note some pride or arrogance in her comments as well but as others have said she has done a lot of DIY and has reason to be proud. Additionally sometimes it takes time and life experiences to learn to be humble; things that the Peace Corp are certain to give.
OH, THE MYOPIA...
I also agree w/ MsDonnaGirl: "It's interesting that such creative/artsy/interior design junkies can't accept an aesthetic other than their own. "
It seems that some of the (snarky) commenters only see what's before their eyes, and nothing more (i.e., taking things LITERALLY).
What I see are sound design principles that translate to other design styles, should Kristen decide to redecorate or work w/ a client whose aesthetic is something other than her own. I also think (and this is only through inference) that this studio apt does not define or encompass the entirely of Kristen's aesthetic preferences.
Some people are SO quick to make assumptions and reach firm conclusions w/o first asking the questions which would give them necessary insights...it's called IGNORANCE, but such is Nature. :)
OF COURSE Kristen should be proud of herself!! She's organized, resourceful, allows PURPOSE to guide her decision-making (always foolproof), and has everything she needs in a small space...qualities the haters on this page DON'T have...otherwise, they wouldn't question how she manages to live (happily) in a small space.
As one who also relishes small-space living, I completely understand the appeal of not having to WASTE my time and energy on maintaining a home, much of which doesn't get used (i.e., why is it the necessary [for all] to have a HUGE bed taking up a room that remains empty except when you're unconscious? Is it worth it for everyone to work and earn all that extra money for that amt. of space?). Some people need McMansions to fill up their (possibly) empty souls, while others are quite content to comfortably live in a trailer, boat, or studio apt. w/ only the beautiful and functional things that they need. <3
I'm just a couple blocks away - I've often wondered about the apartments right above the market, and never realized they were so tiny. It's really cool to see Kristen's space -- I think what you've done with your studio is fantastic. Ignore the negative comments -- you've got great style.
So, are we reviewing the space, which is quite charming considering its size and budget, or the woman who designed it? Amazing, and rather depressing, that even a site as frivolous as Apartment Therapy is subject to the usual incivility and mean-spiritedness that are the step-children of online anonymity. Maybe it's too much to ask commenters to think before they type, but couldn't we at least encourage them to stick to the forum topic?
Ok can we all stop using the work 'snark'? It's getting annoying.
On the apartment, I'm curious to see the bathroom...
I'm curious what a 125 sf around Pikes costs?
For such a small space and being 22 it's a nice job. The problem I have is that it seems very lifeless. There is nothing that indicates someone really lives here. I understand you would clean and de-clutter for photos, but you have taken out the life of the space. For example, do you really not have one pillow on your bed.
OK, if you love it that's fabulous! I, too, went through a white phase when I was younger. I think you have done well with the space you have and I applaud your desire to live unfettered by things. But please -- spell Mr. Starck's name correctly when you send in your resume. :)
Best of luck to you, my dear. I could do with a bit of your youthful enthusiasm myself!
When a graduated from design school I could fit every thing I owned in the back of my car. Was I a minimalist or just a poor college student? No one expects a 22 year old to have much that's why this post comes off a bit preachy. Also it maybe that people are looking at the silver bust and asking, "is this functional? What can I use this for (literally)?"
I like it!
i am saddened by all the unkind comments. where is the spirit of encouragement? you don't have to like it--and you don't have to comment. she's done a lovely job with a tiny space; she's experimenting and having fun.
Though the white-on-white-on-white is not for me, I completely understand her use of it. Seattle is a gloomy town much of the year and with only one window in her studio I imagine that it makes the place feel bright year round. The lack of a workspace is questionable though given that she is a freelance interior designer.
Really good use of space. Kristen knows what she wants; always a good thing! Although all the white feels a little too cold for me, I respect what she has done :)
I have always been attracted to white spaces, and apparently, so are a lot of other people considering the space that decor magazines devote to the look.
Having two kids and a dog made white impractical for us for a while, but I may still end up with a white/cream decor (with slip covers) that is accented with aged woods and and eclectic pieces from France and Scandinavia.
And by the way, Kristen, I really love the silver bust in your home. Any info you'd care to share on that?
Stunning. One of the best spaces I've seen on the site so far.
Personally, I've always picked Location over Size.
For some reason people on this site get so upset about minimal spaces.
What, now people aren't allowed to be proud of their homes and the work they put into them?
When I read these comments I think "oh, they'd say that about my space too" ;)
Posting your abode online opens up comments on your abode, not on your person. But kudos to Kristen for her design, and for joining the Peace Corps.
AT is a haven for women who fantasize about living in some Martha Stewart-y country cottage, and some of these gals get downright hostile at anything presented on here that strays from their rigid (and incredibly boring) aesthetic.
AT is a haven for women who fantasize about living in some Martha Stewart-y country cottage
Actually, I thought AT was a haven for unhappy hipsters in "mid-century modern eclectic" lofts which were required by law to have Eames chairs in them - ?!
PS I might or might not resemble that remark.
In reference to the "blank canvas" look w/ all of the white, could it perhaps be a preference for some creative people who prefer not to have to change their own space immediately after they tire of the look?
Since designers have the opportunity to work w/ different looks at work, they might have ample outlets for variety there...so maybe the all-whiteness (or all-black for some creative types) isn't about being "boring" (because they're clearly not AFRAID of change) but rather a way to (1) be timeless and (2) keep their space uncomplicated to allow for new ideas, unobstructed by what's in their view.
I love that you have a crystal chandelier in the bedroom! It really adds a touch of luxury to the small space.
I bet when you open your closet door, it's like an avalanche coming at you. LOL! Seriously though very artistic. I wish I had your confidence at twenty two.
Your space is beautiful. I really like the muffler bed and that many of the objects in your space are not even necessarily functional as their main purpose, or at all functional.
It reminds me of Salvador Dali's house.
Also, in regards to the black dog in a white space issue, the rug is dark. Only the bed cover is made of white fabric. Black lab hair doesn't stick to white painted furniture.
I have two black dogs. Their hair does, however, stick to anything plastic, like a ghost chair.
P.S. I have had evil personal attack-type comments posted about me in the comments section of a blog that was covering something I do creatively, for a living, and it really hurt my feelings.
But then I realized the evil comment attack happens to a lot of people who are self-confident about being willing to go out on a limb and do something original.
I love this place, modest, calm and well organized.
The nasty comments probably belong to people who at the age of 22 lived convnienly in huge rooms that were located in their parents house...
brooklynindiana - you hit the nail on the head!
Perhaps Kristen appreciates life experiences over having lots of possessions in her home - that's probably why she wants to join the Peace Corps over buying another piece of furniture to fill the holes in her life!
I love your space - I'm big on minimalism myself. I would rather spend money on LIVING my life rather than furnishing it.
Marshall0, you have to admit it's ironic that you spelled Philippe Starck's first name wrong. :)
we all clean up for the camera but this place has been sanitized to the point it looks like no one ever lives there.
I love this! I am so impressed with everything...Great Job!!!!
I think this is incredibly creative however, how is it possible to store your winter jackets, books, blankets etc.? Is there a hole in the floor underneath?
Also, Please answer the above questions about the dog-I too feel bad for the little guy/gal having to live in there with you, seems no bigger than a kennel at an animal shelter..
i agree with emmelemm re: the stereotypical AT reader... eeba, where are these martha stewart worshippers? they would actually be quite a novelty on this site.
One of the funniest comments I see posted here is BigTab's on 11/8 at 2:18 pm who calls for "a full house tour!" and comments posted are a part of what I enjoy about AT. Whether the comments were positive or negative, serious or playful, I could still be impressed by Kristen Ellis' commitment to her design and decor vision and that she apparently speaks it, wears it and lives it like something a step beyond performance art. But when I saw the big black dog on the white bed, then it all seemed so contrived for the weird AT shoot that it is.
Well I agree with eeba. The Martha Stewart/DIYers come out in droves every time something a little adventurous, dramatic, or highly stylized is shown on AT. Just look for the predictable "IT'S SO COLD" "IT LOOKS LIKE NO ONE LIVE THERE" "IT WOULD DRIVE ME CRAZY" comments. I think these are the same ladies who constantly use the phrase "I love love love ____!"
But I don't think Martha Stewart is the right comparison - the AT crowd likes more of a DIY/thrift store/funky aesthetic (as long as it's warm and cozy).
I love it! Love your use of white..and touches of color..
This is perfection. So simple, yet not!
Who makes the rug?
hamster88- the rug is by ikea. if ever in doubt, it's probably from ikea.
i think it's great - i live in alberta, canada where everybody is "bigger=better" obsessed, and i find apartments like this refreshing. i have too much clutter to be able to live that small, but you definitely have my respect for being able to do so.
also for those who are complaining about the dog/space: dogs are den animals - they like smaller spaces because it makes them feel safe. as long as he/she gets enough exercise during the day, it doesn't matter the size of the home.
A very elegant, simple space.
But there is NO functionality to this setup. None. I can't imagine cooking, lounging around, or doing any normal living in this apartment.
Its function is for viewing on Apartment Therapy.
Kristen - Lovely apartment! Good luck in the Peace Corps, too. I served in the Caribbean and absolutely loved finding creative ways to decorate/furnish my little house with found objects without spending any money. I'm sure you'll come up with something amazing!
I am truly impressed. I admire your power of restraint, I am too much of a messy person to discipline myself enough to be able to live with only a handful of stuff.
I don't consider white a cold colour (or course, there are many shades of white). I love how your dog and the beautiful throw accentuate the apartment.
Now I want to see what's in your wardrobe!
Calm down, everyone. Minimalist or not, her apartment does NOT look like this when it isn't being photographed for AT. Do you think she spends Seattle nights covered with a throw? I don't think so.
Besides, what 22 year old fresh out of college (especially with a design degree) isn't a little self-important and hyperbolic?
Now, about the design...it is empirically beautiful, but I think the lack of texture makes it feel a little uncomfortable.
I take that back...smooth is a texture...I meant the lack of variety in texture.
Wow, what an amazing job with a tiny little space! My tiniest apartment ever was almost twice this big and I thought it was SO SMALL. Excellent choices throughout. The white is so solid, a real presence. I can't wait to see you spray paint everything red, or green, or whatever next! Another advantage of such a tiny space, I think - you can redo it in any other bold statement color pretty easily.
Also: funny comments! Someone feeling a little, umm, old and mediocre?
Love Love Love the tiny kitchen. I'm not sure I could live in 125 sq ft for a very long period of time, but your place is beautiful!
We lived in a 32' long 8' wide trailer with our 2 kids, large dog (also a black lab) and 3 cats- and hubbs and myself. I LOVED IT. We did it for 5 months between houses, and it was great. Mind you, our kids are small, so space needs are minimal. When I had my son, I was a single mom in a 380 st ft apartment. With a baby. With STUFF. It can be done graciously, like this space has been. Bravo! cute dog, serene space. I might need to get myself a place like this and not let hubby or the kids know about it.... my secret hideout! With my TWO large dogs! ;)
Im about to have a panic attack just looking at that place. But you obviously have a life, and I spend alot of time at home. So there you go.
The white really does open it up. As much as it possibly can be...
Aye, the snark! I know of many people who have lived in such small spaces but not in such a minimal fashion. Yours looks lovely, and "I" read that your pillow etc goes in the trunk.
People, she says she's moving in the spring so now is the keep it to an absolute minimum. Right?
So, where does she store any actual food?
love your little spot, it's beautiful. was just in pike place market recently & completely understand why location is the priority over size there-- it's such an amazing spot!
Kristen,
I love your space and what you've done with it; it's ingenious. I'm disappointed to see how many other posters have bothered to share their snarky thoughts. What's the point?
Good luck to you in realizing your ambitions and thank you for your service in the Peace Corps.
J.
This took me back to my undergrad years living in a studio of approximately the same size in Chicago. It was incredibly affordable, and it allowed me to take advantage of the city's many amenities. My studio was not nearly as well-conceived or planned as this, so kudos to you! The only part that made my tiny studio realistically liveable was a giant walk-in closet that led to the bathroom where I could stash all my worldly possessions.
Perfectly minimal. Well done on the DIY.
You are a young woman of obvious talent. Some will fear this. Ignore them. Your life with flourish.
The worst thing about this post is the number of times derivations of the word SNARK have been used. Let's get a little variety people.
This is a nice little (really little), but cute nonetheless, place to live in a great city. Have fun Kristen!
Nice place - just one question...how do you keep your apartment so pristine with a big dog like that? Isn't there black fur everywhere??
Whilst there is no Eames or Saarinen here, she's has got the accent rug and throw, plus things on the wall - all of which seem to be a prerequisite according to many here...and all being the things I would personally remove. But as a fan of hospital clean over hotel clean, I like this overall.
Kristen, Your space is a tiny gem.
depressing
you missed a spot.
I don't really understand the rude and unnecessary remarks. It's a person that is displaying their home for others to enjoy or gain inspiration and receives unwanted, offensive comments. Please try to remember your manners you were taught to use in daily life situations.
I like your apartment. :) It's very clean and simple. While it's not my style, I can appreciate it. Good job and good luck in the Peace Corps!
I very rarely like minimalist homes, but I LOVE this apartment! Even my husband, who doesn't really pay attention to home decor, looked at this post over my shoulder and gushed over how beautiful the apartment is! It's so simple, but classy, and I love how the colors in the rug and the blanket really stand out against the white.
Do you live in this apartment? I don't see anything personal, no books or magazines, no photos, shoes, key hooks or coat racks- the things that make a place look lived in.
What's the story?
Your apartment resembles a work of art to me. Its beautiful and interesting to look at...although I agree with most of the comments that it does not look lived in. Where is everything you own??
Note to self: BFA programs in design will not teach proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, or humility.
Really, AT? The space is beautiful, but for a blog that seems so very concerned with the print content of its entries (evidenced by the gratuitous royal "we"), this was very poorly edited. It was cute when Claudia Kishi couldn't spell, but it's lost its charm.
Wow, I honestly feel as though there's too much decor. Actually, it's just right, I just happen to hate rococo!
I think this apartment is awesome and super-resourceful. Sour grapes, my pretties.
I can honestly say this is the first white space I've really liked. I think the mustard throw (!) and the black dog are just right to make the place come alive-- and as a resident of the bay area, I can see the appeal of an all-white interior. I agree with the decision to keep the bed free of extraneous linens during the day, since the bed is forced to serve as a sofa as well. Studios that have a made bed out in the open, even if it's sectioned off by a curtain or some shelving, just look tacky and dorm roomish to me.
As far as Kristen's "self-importance"-- please. If this were a house tour rather than a house call, being written by an AT contributor but in more or less exactly Kristen's words (including a Q&A in her own words), we would be told her "Proudest DIY," we'd get an ATer gushing over her minimal aesthetic, we'd be linked to her website right at the top of the page.
Oh, and just because I'm feeling a little feisty: SNARK.
well done
It's great to live simple life and have no roommate problems. Congrats to you!
Awesome space. I love the frames and your pupper is beautiful! I hope you can have someone watch him while your gone.
I wasn't going to comment on all the negativity but I just have to say MarshalO, if you're going to correct someone, get it right, DUH!!!! She spelled it right and YOU did not!
'If you want to work with Phillipe Starck, you should at least learn to spell his name!'
Check out his site if you think I'm wrong!
http://www.starck.com/
Also, when you finish school you ARE proud. People need to calm down.
And I thought my studio of 215 sq.ft. was tiny. Kristen, I salute you!
i just spent a hellish week moving into a new apt. i cant get over how much stuff i have for one person.
the amount of stuff you have (or rather, the lack thereof), you have no idea how INSPIRING it is.
She exists.
http://www.rejuted.com/
Now the apartment is down to 96 sq feet, though.
Personally, I like it, but it needs more information, and would have been better if the profile were photographed and written by someone else. Are there no AT bloggers here in Seattle to do house tours? Because I'm always available for freelance work :)
This is gorgeous! The challenge for me would be keeping my possessions to a minimum. I hate to think what I'd do with the sea of papers.
I often come back to this post when I need to declutter or if I am tempted to buy some new item. I love this small space tour!
Saw a little more of this space on the Nate Berkus show this week--she has a great bookshelf she built herself. Gorgeous--inspires me to purge some excess belongings!
I just love this! I don't see how you can ever leave it. I wouldn't be able to! Thank you so much for sharing.
;-)
Really? I guess you dont cook or watch tv. It looks like a white prison cell. I feel sorry for the poor dog.
People, we do not all agree. Chill out and let the comments roll. Good or bad. It's our true feelings. Geez!
It's so elegant and fresh! You've done a wonderful job with what little space you have. This reminds me of when Ula painted the office all white in The Producer! Hehe.
This has to be one of my favourite tours. I think it's hard to be a minimalist and also being decorative at the same time but you did this so well especially in a small space! I agree it is a slice of heaven!
The place if gorgeous. I have so many questions for you that I think it would be a good idea for you to do a video of how you live in this place. I saw a video of a guy who lived in a tiny apt. in Manhattan and he had his microwave in the closet above his shoes. After the video I got a real idea of how he lived because I can't imagine that you actually live in this place. You must spend all your time at your girlfriend's place and this is your lovely retreat for an afternoon.
The market is a dangerous place to be walking in at night. As a young female it doesn't seem like an approprite neighborhood for you.
You have very pretty things in there such as the bust and the shelf that isn't used for anything practical, only nice decorative items. That's great but it seems like in such a tiny space everything would need to serve as something useful.
On the other hand it must be so nice to live by the market and have so many nice places within walking distance. Seems like it would get expensive eating out all the time.
In any event I am a color person but sure do find the white very beautiful. I bet the other apartments where you live are grungy and gross. Yours is probably a diamond in the rough. The only reason I say the other apts must be grungy is because the market has sort of a cool grungy vibe.
Will look forward to seeing the decor of your new place when you are abroad in the Peace Corp.
Do you have your own bathroom or do you have to share a bathroom with your neighbors?
Kristen, look at how much discussion your apartment created! I can't remember having to scroll through so many comments before.
Seeing your apartment makes me want to revisit the play Waiting for Godot. I imagine the person who lives here is a protagonist in a dystopian play, only it is real life...
Nice work!
Congratulations ! Its a beautiful apartment and seems like a really comforting place to come home to. Kudos for putting your design education to work right away. The combination of finishes -- the wash on the trunk, the gloss/"laquer" finish of the shelves, the sheen of the mirrored surfaces and chrome/steel/silver pieces is a nice substitute for color and really works in a small space. WELL DONE !
I love reading the comments more than looking at the space. Good Luck on your ventures. I would like to see your wardrobe and outfits. How many pair of shoes do you own?
Loved it last year...Love it even more this year...Great Job!
Living in Vancouver, I definitely understand the need to brighten a living space, given all of the dreary days of rain, plus you just have the one window. The beauty of this space is a) living in a small space allows you to save money for your travel plans; b) since it's temporary, the white saves you time and effort painting in order to make it sellable/acceptable to the landlord; c) few things to pack up when it's time to move! The trunk for storage of bedding is a good idea, since it allows the bed to feel more like a couch during the day. Nice work, and looking forward to seeing more of your designs and craftiness in the future!
I'm all for white, with a pop of colour~I just found her colour choice to be the most dull part of the room (but I loathe chartreuse)~a grass green rug to replace the black and white one would look incredible (for me). All in all, she's young and I think she's done well. As for the dog, (s)he's adorable. When you have a pet that you love, no amount of shedding will matter. However, I'm curious what will happen to the dog when she goes into the peace corps?
ya,...I love this..and I Wish I could be This, but I'm not.,,,I'm That-That being Colour!! and stuff and vignettes! If I see a blank wall - white or bare-I think "there's something missing". I wish I could do this-I admire it so much...thanks for sharing
I love idea of a minimalist place, and I can't find one smaller than 300 sq ft here in TX. I do like the idea of showing such ingenuity and living with what you need and not all that you want. I do not care for the white though in all parts of your space. I love how it lightens the mini flat, but I would be so afraid to spill any thing. Also, it's not welcoming to visitors without at least three shades of color (blue, dark brown, purple, maybe). You don't want to relax because everything looks so sterile and crisp. I don't think I'd be able to get by with just 125, because I need a desk for court reporting. So impressed that you made this work for you though!
Everyone's so mean. I love it although I would have more color than a blanket and some flower stems. I found this looking for minimalist inspiration for m new place. I LOVE IT! Put these pics on my idea board. Am a little curious about the black dog, but none of my bussiness. I recently had to give away my little black long hair mutt. Although I miss her, my house is SOOOOOOOO much cleaner!
My real question is, where do I get that bed. It has a very low profile.
