We've started a new routine of taking 10 minutes each night, to tackle 5 things that have since made a world of difference in the overall upkeep of our home. It makes our mornings easier and our nights more calming. See what they are after the jump!
1. Do The Dishes - It's a proven fact that we're more likely to eat at home and make dinner ourselves if the area in which food preparation happens is clean. It's easy to cook dinner and leave cleanup for later, but making sure the dishes are done before the morning routine starts makes for a healthier day. Breakfast is a snap, dinner is easy and best of all the dishes are easy to do. Doing them each night eliminates those little bits of crusty stuck on food that can take extra time to scrape off later.
2. Pick Up Outerwear - It's easy to come home, take off your jacket, your shoes, your hat and get comfy! After all, that's what a home is for! But if your home is anything like ours, more than a days worth of shoes on the floor can be a disaster. Literally. Making sure that stray bits of clothing and shoes have been returned to their closets and baskets makes other chores on our list easier throughout the week. No one wants to clean their space before they can clean their space. Knowing you have a few minutes to spare to vacuum is easy when you don't have to tidy before hand!
3. Replace Entertainment - Most often our days are filled with busy stressful things and after our projects, homework or activites are done, there's nothing more we want than to sink into our couch with a snack and a great dvd or video game. The downfall to such habits usually necessitates a little clutter out in the open. Game boxes, dvd cases, controllers, remotes... they can seem simple and harmless, but keeping it in check each night means our main living spaces are ready to go for the next nights fun. Plus it keeps things at bay in case impromptu guests come over.
4. Tie Off Trash - Each morning before we leave the house we take the trash out. It's a great way to keep our space clean and to prevent having to drag more than 1 bag outside at a time. Because if more than 1 bag goes out at a time, that means there was a bag sitting and waiting in your home. And although it's easy to do (we've been there too), the thought of a bag of trash just hanging out is kind of... gross. By tying it off each night, it's ready to grab as we walk out the door to walk the dogs. We don't have any fuss, mess or frustration. We also have smaller bags than most, so if this isn't applicable to you, then adjust it as it works with your home.
5. Make A List - It seems silly, but there's nothing more annoying that having been out all day, only to return to discover you forgot to pick up something important. Shampoo, toilet paper, copies that needed to be made, whatever the case may be, a simple list of things that need to be picked up or done the next day can be quite freeing. We put the list in our pocket on the way out the door and it helps us keep track of the things on our agenda.

I at least get the dirty dishes in the dishwasher, try to clear off the counters and coffee table and put away the puppy's toys before bed.
How does one go through a whole bag of garbage in a day? I take the trash and recycling out once a week, and even then the trash bag isn't totally full. I would take it out more often (as it can get stinky), but I have a serious problem with disposing of half-full garbage bags.
LOL, sounds like my house! Great tips!
My tip: Every night I wipe down the counters in the kitchen and throw the dishcloth into the laundry. Dishcloths are tiny, so it's not a lot of extra storage or laundry to have one for every day of the week.
I am notorious for changing my clothes 2-4 times a day, usually in a rush, so I leave them piled at the side of my bed. I try to get everything put where it belongs right before I climb into bed at night so the bedroom doesn't look a wreck after two days.
And I clear dog toys from the bedroom-bathroom path to avoid injuries and startling midnight squeaks.
Where can I find instructions on how to make a headboard like the one pictured?
I am a compulsive counter cleaner and I never leave anything in the sink, maybe to soak but never overnight.
I think to tie off the trash is ok to avoid a bug issue but untie the next day, I agree I try very hard not to have more than one full bag week.
I pretty much put everything away at the end of each day, I cannot stand to wake up to any clutter or things laying around. I only use my TV for movies and my TV and stereo are on a surge protector plug that gets turned off when not in use.
The list idea is good, I always start out with a list but I put it away too fast to read what is on there. This is why I should get a chalk board.
This is a great list. I can see how attending to each of these things every night would help with organization and peace of mind.
I would add to this list:
6) open and deal with the day's mail; and
7) go through your purse or bag to organize whatever you accumulated during the day (i.e., receipts, etc.).
I like to set up my coffee pot for the morning and prepare my lunch the night before. Since I'm generally comatose in the morning, pushing a button for coffee is easier.
I also try to tidy the kitchen so I don't have to come home to dirty dishes.
I agree with the trash - I stopped buying trash bags and now use the ones they give you at either the grocery stores or wherever I am shopping.
The only thing I would add is - go through mail.
These are all great things to get done before bed. I have a much easier time getting ready for my next day when things are clean and put away. I would also add laying out clothes and things for the next day.

you have enough garbage each day to take it out every morning?
we just make sure our food waste is separate and deal with that every few days.
I have a rule "never leave a room without taking something with you".
As you move around from bedroom to living room to...etc. look around and see what needs to be taken from that room you are in, to the room you are going to (or passing by). Keeps things constantly moving instead of stuck in one room.
Where I live the city picks up the trash, but you have to buy stickers to put on the bags (showing that you paid for pickup). You can bet that no one living here puts out a half bag of trash! It's actually a pretty cool system. It encourages recycling (FREE pickup!), causes people to think about what each bag of trash really means and charges people based upon how much they use sanitation services.
For heavy users, an annual sticker is available for each standard-sized rolling bin. Not sure what it costs, since I pay by the bag.
I check the next day's weather forecast and lay out both my workout clothes (I exercise in the morning before work) and my work clothes. The former saves me time fumbling through drawers in the dark when I'm half asleep, and the latter lets me get dressed quickly and appropriately for the (frequently rainy) weather.
I also like to have my bag packed and my lunch for the next day prepped and placed front and center in the refrigerator.
I'm a little OCD about this kind of thing, though.
Oh, and it's "preparation", not "preperation".
Mmmm... My wife's grandmother told us, "Never go to sleep still angry with one another."
My grandmother told me to pray.
My kids told me to tell them stories, one for each, in two languages.
My little sister would drive us crazy in the mornings. Selecting her cloths always involved fights, tears, half an hour and missing the school bus. Unless I was home from university to save the situation. Then we started choosing before she went to bed.
My personal recomendation is never like a late TV program. It ruins your sex life. "Sex in the City" was an oxymoron.
Seriously? Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink over night? Who doesn't already do this?
ThatGrrl - that's an awesome system!
I got so excited when my condo building got "all inclusive" recycling bins instead of hoping Chicago's blue bag program was effective. Now I can dump all my plastic and metal together, have a paper bag full of paper and cardboard and they all go down together and (hopefully) get recycled. This seriously cuts down on my garbage.
I should probably have a separate bag for food scraps and take those down every couple days. I bet I wouldn't fill a trash bag in 3 weeks if I did that.
I do the following: clean cats' litter box; check cats' food and water dispensers; put my reading glasses away so they don't end up on the floor as a toy for the cats; check that doors and windows are locked; sometimes load and start dishwasher; check calendar for next day appointments; turn out light in house; plug in nightlight; draw blinds in bedroom; set clock if needed and call it a day!
I leave my dishes in the sink overnight all the time. I like washing them in the morning to help myself wake up. I always give them a quick rinse while I'm cooking so there isn't anything stuck on.
I drink a cup of tea and straighten the pillows on the couch before I go to bed.
i do open my mail when i get in. recycle what's trash and organize the rest.
otherwise, i generally just try to relax before bed, but I do kind of like the idea of doing a few specific things to minimize clutter/mess.
as for the nightly trash, i have to agree with others that it kind of sounds like making trash. especially since "tying off" sounds like you're using a plastic bag. i mean i'm probably getting on a high horse here, but if you're going to trump 5x the plastic into the landfill with your personal ick factor, then at least use paper trash bags. =)
My grandmother used to say "after dinner the dishes cry 'wash me! wash me!' and if you don't wash them right away, next morning it's you who cries".
Our biggest problem is washing. I try to always put a load of washing on over night so that its ready to hang out in the morning. Also, if theres nothing on TV you're interested in before you go to bed, its a great time to fold or iron.
first5times, I actually do keep food scraps (or potentially smelly empty food containers) separately. I've sort of designated one of my refrigerator vegetable bins as food scraps and container storage. I bring out one bag of garbage every week or sometimes every other week. I just pull out the bag with scraps/containers and toss it in when the trash goes out. Apartment still smells fine. Trash doesn't need to go out more often just because of food scraps.
I presume they take the trash out daily because they have a small trash can. I'd imagine multiple people and dogs could easily generate enough trash to fill a grocery-sized plastic bag.
Where can I get the headboard in the photo?
We have a tiny kitchen, and the only trashcan that will fit under our sink is also tiny. It's definitely full at the end of the day! Ditto the bathroom, which has a tinier sink and a really ridiculously tiny trashcan under it. It's like a Barbie trashcan.
I try to do my partner before going to bed.
oh...and clean up the coffee table.
Love moepong's answer! Beats the crap out of doing dishes.
I know that a lot of people don't, but I like these organizing-type articles.
I have a 15 year old to take out my trash every night before bed. We have a large can in the garage that we fill up with the day's trash. I have a 12 year old that does the dishes before bed each night. All I have to do is turn out the lights. This is the life!
Kathryn, like sleepingspot said, some of us prefer to do dishes in the morning as a way to wake up. Not just that but my evenings are short enough with my kids and I'd rather interact with them and help them with homework than make a lot of noise in the kitchen (we have a very small house). I just get up a half-hour before they do and do various chores then.
Clean off the coffe table.
AZkathy - That is an awesome rule!! I'm going to use that rule!!! Thank you!
taking the trash out daily seems excessive for almost anybody. granted i live alone, but i only fill a small grocery store bag with trash about every two weeks. seems like if you're taking it out everyday, you're generating too much trash and probably wasting lots of plastic bags.
Taking out the trash daily isn't so bad if you've got a very small garbage can, which often happens in tiny apartments! Besides, if you've got a small enough plastic trashcan you don't even need plastic bags unless you're throwing away something goopy like bad food. Just carry it out in the morning and give it a quick rinse.
Anyway, I completely ignore all lists that say "Never go to bed with dishes in the sink." Forget that. Work keeps me away from my husband long enough. The last thing I want to do at night before bed is being up to my elbows in dirty dishwater instead of getting quality time!
The system I prefer is the soaking overnight method. I just put the dishes in a small plastic tub, throw in some soap, and just enough water to cover everything. By the time morning rolls around, the dishes have practically cleaned themselves and just require a rinse.
Pots, though, do get washed just because they easily stink up a small apartment. That's why I use the plastic tub for the dishes - it can sit next to the sink, so the sink is still usable for other washing, getting a class of water, washing hands, etc.
we take the garbage out daily...we have 2 kids and everything from food scraps to diapers to lost toys goes in the trash. We also do the dishes at night mainly bcoz cockroaches scare us! We have a small apartment and it can stink up rather quickly and get infested even faster!
We do pick upmtoys b4 bed! that's our lifesaver!
I can't help thinking that the people who are being so judgmental about the people who take out garbage every day either use a big garbage can/bag, or eat out a lot and thus produce their garbage elsewhere, other than at home. We never eat out, other than the odd family celebration once or twice a year, and I am at home with the kids all day while working from home, so between my husband, me and our two little kids, we have quite a bit of garbage every day and prefer not to let it get smelly. I think that taking care of garbage issues every day/night is good general advice, though of course it may not be applicable to everyone.
What! Are you serious? A bag of garbage a day??
I cook and live with my partner. Almost everything we use goes in the organic/green bin or is recycled. And yes, we have a tiny garbage bin (shopping bag sized). I have never filled more than one grocery bag per week. If your garbage gets smelly, chances are it's food and can go in the compost bin. So? JUDGY JUDGERSON!
"Seriously? Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink over night? Who doesn't already do this?"
Anyone who doesn't have a dishwasher and feels washing dishes by hand is less desirable than the thought of daily root canals. Namely me.
And a bag of garbage a day!!! I'm usually taking out one every week and a half. I'm going to be judgy mcjudgerson here and suggest anyone who takes out even a grocery bag of trash a day is probably using paper towels! That's the only thing I can think of to take up that kind of space. And for the record... a roll of paper towels usually lasts me 9 months to a year.
I always try to straighten cushions (pillows) on the sofa and plump them up, take out cups, glasses or plates, newspapers and put magazines in the rack.
I need to print off this list and frame it on my fridge for the husband! :)
Having a clean kitchen DEFINITELY helps with wanting to eat at home and the likelihood of eating breakfast in the morning!
1.Set up the Coffee Pot
2.Wash Dishes and put them away
3.Quick Sweep and Mop the floor ( yeah swiffer )
4.Remind Husband to take the trash out
5.Before Bed Gin Martini on the rocks with a twist...
every thing else can either wait or is not important......
@christinalouise
The headboard was featured on HouseBeautiful - "This master bedroom of modern appeal designed by Moises Esquenazi is dark and cozy, with walls in Farrow & Ball Mahogany No. 36. The mohair velvet headboard is by the designer. Featured in the July 2008 issue." It's custom.
I rarely have the time, but when I do, I love to prepare the next evening's meal in the crockpot, put it in the fridge overnight, then it's all ready to take out and slow cook all day the next day while I'm at work.
oh..im a little OCD and can i just say.. I LOVE THIS POST. I am the one within my circle of friends that is COMPLETELY organized so having ideas circling like "Do The Dishes, Pick Up Outerwear...i always take out the trash" etc going around is COMPLETELY my "kinda thang" *big laugh, smile, and speaking up for my way of life =p=)
(ps, i actually have a "list book" to rein in the many thoughts flying in my head thru-out the day =p)
..im ok with #3 leaving entertainment lying around tho cos if anything.. it shows i did have some fun, and sometimes i need visual reminders like these to tell myself life is not all stressful and right-answers at work.. sometimes it is whind down. (so i'll def leave cds, game consoles around =p=) unless it's "reset the house" day, or clean up day, i'll tidy the whole place.
THANK YOU for writing something for the little people (im always being told off for who i am. but i believe in being neat and kind [and esp when sharing a space, it is rude to just LEAVE your things lying around, kinda like 'marking territory')
Alright, people, stone me. I leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight. I do have a dishwasher but since I live by myself, I don't generate enough dishes to fill up the dishwasher. And, because the beast is quite old (it came with the house) it's a horrible energy hog.
I hopped on the bandwagon of dedicating 20 minutes a day to cleaning, as per the list that was posted on AT earlier this week. I have to admit that kitchen is my worst problem because it usually collects things that don't have a permanent place.
I always leave the living room spotless and everything is put away, including remotes, etc.
I would add....check your calendar or daytimer for the next day, in case there is something you were supposed to prepare for and forgot.
so, basically it's saying don't be lazy. =)
i completely agree with these things. One of my routines while cooking is that, I wash the dishes at the same time as I'm cooking as much as possible. So that you are done eating, you wouldn't need to deal with all those pots and pans.
Walk the dog minutes before getting into bed (even if it is 2 or 3AM). If he pees as late as possible at night, he sleeps in later in the AM.
Turn off ringers.
Great list! I could probably add a few things on there myself :)
I'm gonna go ahead and agree with some others... a bag a day? For real?
In my house, it's me, my husband and 3 dogs (one of which isn't 100% housetrained yet... lots of paper towels). We use up maybe 1 small-size tie bag every week or 2.
... and that's considering we don't recycle. There's no recycling in my city!! :(
Not a fan of the headboard in the picture at all - to me it looks line an oversized radiator. Maybe I would like it in a less radiator-ish color. :)
The only thing I am completely consistent about doing every night is charging my cell phone.
Dirty dishes in the sink? How about we just load the dishwasher at night, and when it gets full we turn it on?
I try to clean the kitchen before I go to bed. Nothing beats walking into a neat and clean kitchen in the morning for coffee. I don't do it very often. It actually gives me a start, like I'm in someone else's kitchen, if it's spotless in the morning. Isn't that awful?
As for picking up clothes, two words, dressing room. Once you've had one, you can't go back. I've had room sized dressing rooms, and one 4x5, but either way, once you get used to dressing and undressing there, nothing ever needs to be picked up again.
I do make lists. I never leave the house without one. Ever. It's such a disaster if I forget it, I pack it in my stuff the night before.
I'm impressed that this can all be done in just ten minutes!
It takes me 15 to do just the dishes, let alone pick up and make a list.
What kind of households do some live in that they generate a whole bag of trash in one single day? The trash here wouldn't really be full for about a week, but it gets taken out every 3-4 days so it doesn't start smelling funky.
As long as the dishes are rinsed and placed in the dishwasher, trash is taken to the trash can (the fiance is notorious for leaving a soda can where he finished drinking it), and the door and windows are locked I'm fine for bed.
Good list. We take out the food scraps daily (our town composts), so I'm with you.
I would add setting up coffee for the morning. Vital.
When I was teaching & had to be out the door early, I found
1) setting up the coffee pot
2) packing my lunch and
3) picking out clothes the night before kept the chaos and clutter to a minimum in the morning.
@Kathryn I almost always have dishes in the sink overnight. So what? :P
I need to start doing some of the things on this list. Being unemployed I actually let things pile up more than if I was working. As for the bag of garbage a day thing, I grew up in a family of 5 and this was before we had recycling services. We maybe filled one or two garbage bags a week. So maybe some people just produce a lot of trash these days.
Finish the chapter you're reading & make sure the cat has enough food.
Dishes are done here in the morning, bc the light is better then. Rubbish (which is seperated into a compost bin, and recycling - we can recycle most things here in Melbourne (aust) - and paper as well as trash) is taken out when the bag is full. As part of our reusing things means the bag can be anything from a bread bag to a supermarket bag to a dress bag, it depends when it fills, but usually every day.
It almost seems like different people have different household situations and different schedules for taking out the garbage, not to mention different sizes of garbage bags. Go figure! Some households have 1-2 people and generate a little garbage. Some households have 4+ people and generate a lot of garbage. Kind of makes you go "Hm." PS. I would love to not leave the dishes out overnight, Kathryn, but to be honest, after dinner is over, I'm tired. And it's really not that big of a deal. I *like* to get up before the kids are up and do everything first thing in the morning. :P
Great tips. I'm a huge list maker. There's something so refreshing about seeing all of the things you got accomplished at the end of the day.
Holy CRAP! How do you go through a whole bag of trash in a day??? It's been two weeks since I put a new bag in my trashcan, and it's just now halfway full. So weird.
I can't believe so many of you are so judgmental (well, I can actually)! Sounds to me like the poster was talking about a small, reused shopping bag rather than a large, commercial rubbish bag. Everyone's situation is unique to them, and they're the best judge of when they want the rubbish taken out.
I'm amazed at all the people who are amazed that someone can fill up "a whole bag of garbage" in one day. What if the bag is the size of a small produce bag from the grocery store?
I personally don't keep any trash cans in my house that would fit a standard black trash bag, or even a tall white kitchen bag. I do what my grandmother does. I keep a tiny, lidded trash can on the kitchen counter that I line with the little clear produce bags. This gets filled up daily (some-times a couple times if I have people over or did extra cooking) and tied off and put outside in the trash bin until trash day. I never keep food in trash cans overnight. Bugs like woah. I live in Florida and our cockroaches can pick locks and are large enough to set off motion detectors.
I keep a medium plastic trashcan that fits regular plastic grocer bags that I use for larger, non-food items. It's still small enough that sometimes I fill it up in one day. But usually I only have to empty it every other day.
All the other rooms, including the bathroom, it's the same deal. I never keep bathroom or kitchen bags in the house for more than 2 days.
So yeah, but no thanks to the large bags you have to wait a week to fill up before taking out of your house.
Wow! This is really is a group of some self-congratulatory egos. I think in this era everyone tries their best not to produce too much trash, not to use up too much fuel, breast-feed their babies, no VOC paints .... BLAH! Sometimes some households, depending on the household size and trash can, produce a bit more trash. That's life.
Interesting how "trash" can be a sensitive topic theses days.
The original article does say... "We also have smaller bags than most, so if this isn't applicable to you, then adjust it as it works with your home."
@Village: What a great idea! Can you give tips on how you've set this up? AT, this would make a great post -- please?
Where my son lives, Dublin Ireland, the bins are scanned and you pay by weight needless to say people are roaming round with their rubbish looking for an empty bin.
Why are comments from a year and a half ago getting copied verbatim to this month?
Warning! Do not turn on your dishwasher and head to bed. If it malfunctions and begins gushing water all over your floors—it happens—you need to be around to turn it off and stem the damage. I know of two families who came downstairs the next morning to a nightmare. Hours and hours of water causes more major structural harm than you can imagine.
I clean as I go. When I cook, as soon as I finish using a measuring cup or something, I put it in the dishwasher. I hold off running the dishwasher until it's full. (If we eat out all week, that's once a week. If it's Thanksgiving, it's twice a day!) I find that easier than a daily routine.
What I do before bed is clean the litter boxes. Once a week, when our trash is picked up, I swear loudly (since I usually forget it's Tuesday until bedtime!), then I empty the waste paper baskets and take out the trash to the house dumpster. My partner hauls it to the curb (mostly because I figure we should share SOME of the grief.)
Points 2 and 4 (Pick Up Outerwear and Replace Entertainment) would be less of a problem if you rearranged your storage so that the places those things are supposed to go are the nearest places to put them. This doesn't just mean putting storage in place, but sometimes getting rid of a "dumping spot". It takes a bit of thought but it really works. I had the newel post sawn off the bottom of my stairs because I knew I would just dump my coat there rather than take the two steps to hang it up on the coatrack.
Judge me! We do produce about a bag of garbage a day. We cook a lot, and we lack a garbage disposal and a backyard in which to make a compost pile. And I'm sorry, but I am not dragging my disgusting food scraps around town looking for a compost heap. I have a life. Add to that three (reused) bags of cat crap, and the trash goes out every day.
The good thing about taking out the trash every day is that you can use paper grocery bags, so the organic stuff in the trash actually has a chance to biodegrade at the landfill instead of being stuck inside a plastic bag.
We produce a bag of garbage every day or two.
My city doesn't have recycling. We use grocery bags while we cook, but also kitchen sized plastic bags when we don't have grocery bags. We cook a lot of seafood and seafood scraps can't sit overnight!
I love waking up to a clean home and kitchen-I do follow most of these.
My boyfriend prepare the coffe machine for me <3
I keep post-it pad and golf pencil (pilfered from Ikea) in the kitchen and in each bathroom for jotting down "need to replace" items as they come up. When it's time to go shopping, I just have to grab the post-its.
I also check the forecast and pick out my outfit -- this makes getting out the door in the morning much smoother for my tired brain.
I also check that doors are locked and lights are off.
I take my trash out every night, to those who keep trash in for a two days a week or two weeks that is not very sanitary, and it probably stinks and causes you to have bugs and rodents. You really should take your trash out every night.
Also, regarding the trash habits, I think it also depends how accessible your outdoor trash bin which determines how often you remove trash from indoors. If you live in an apartment that's upstairs, or has a dumpster a ways away I can see how that would be inconvenient.
But if you live in a single family home it might not be that big of a deal. Personally my outdoor bin is at the end of the driveway, on the way to the mailbox so I pass it several times a day.
ojanet - Trash goes out about twice a week here. No bugs, no rodents, and unless I'm throwing away ungodly amounts of food there is also no smell.
I guess it depends on how small your home is and how humid your location. Here in the FLA in an 850 sq ft bungalow, Breakfast can start to stink by lunch.
Oh dear, don't manage to do any of these, BUT I always make sure my cat is in
well, rajaune, not everyone HAS a dishwasher, geez.
and being in a pest-free apartment i have the luxury of leaving dishes overnight if i want to. they still get cleaned well before
*well before they become any sort of issue.
I take a large xanax.
~~~~~~
I try to do my partner before going to bed.
oh...and clean up the coffee table.
~~~~~~
That must be a large and sturdy coffee table then ... :)
Graphist- Good one!
#1 is especially important if you live in a place where energy rates are cheaper at night.
#4 is surprising to me-- we have a small trash can and only generate two bags a week. Most of our waste is either recyclables or food scraps that I freeze to make stock. But I do agree that on trash/recycling days it's nice to get it out the night before.
#5 is something I like to do during the workday, since that's when my mind often wanders to things I need to get done outside of work.
Something I try to do before bed is plug in my phone and make sure the alarm is set. There have been a few times where my phone died overnight and I didn't wake up until the sun had already risen!
Meant to say: "#1 is especially important if you have a dishwasher and live in a place where energy rates are cheaper at night." As someone who's lived quite happily without a DW I know not everyone has one!
A WHOLE BAG of trash!! So funny.Yes, when I lived in an apartment, and there was a trash chute in the hall, I took the trash out every morning. Why? Because I could! It wasn't a WHOLE BAG! It was whatever I had, and in a small grocery bag. Not a jumbo family sized trash bag.
Leave dishes in the sink overnight? Check! I'm a morning person, and I don't mind doing a few dishes in the morning, but I do like to clean up all the clutter before going to bed, which means putting the dirty dishes in the sink. (When I get a dish washer then I'll put them there!)
My other nightly ritual is take my p.m. vitamins. I have morning vitamins and evening vitamins. I take the magnesium and calcium at night.
I tie up my trash bag every night to avoid bugs, but I only take it out when it's full.
Overture, I admire your effort with the paper bags, but even organic trash doesn't biodegrade at the landfill. It is all packed too tightly. (You can google this.) It's why I'm trying to figure out how to compost in an apartment.
One bag of trash every day?! Either, you're not separating your compost or recycling, or you have way too much trash. Maybe I've been in San Francisco too long (very possible), but this seems very wasteful as general advice.
Love this post. I also take out the trash daily! Best way to keep your home smelling fresh.
i keep food scraps in the freezer or fridge until the trash bag is full enough to go out to the dumpster, which is maybe every couple of weeks. this keeps the trash from having any smell. with recycling, i'm not sure how people could generate so much waste that it needs to go out so often.
FYI ya'll: You have to do something 21 times to make it a habit!
I go through my mail between the mail box and my front door. By the time I get inside, I have a handful of recycling and another handful of keepers.
My in-laws create AT LEAST one short bag of trash a day, and it baffles me. My husband and I live in a composting and recycling apartment building. If I combine ALL our trash cans, we fill up one tall one once a week, a tall recycling once a week, and a compost pail twice a week.
I'm constantly trying to get into the habit of doing the dishes after every meal — no dishwasher for us!. It's so gross to leave dishes for a day… or more…
Pick out clothing for the next day.
Pack my bag for the gym.
Hang up all the clothes in my bedroom - or put them in the hamper.
like dM above I keeps smelly garbage in the freezer...in addition to that I save all cereal bags, chip bags...etc. and that's what I put my (smelly food) garbage in to go in the freezer..roll it up tight and throw it out once a week..and it you forget, that's ok too.
Oooh, I wanna be judged by Apartment Therapy!
It's OK, I have issues. But if I did all that stuff before I went to bed, I'd never get to sleep. Too much light and activity. Just saying that if you have any issues with insomnia, do that stuff earlier in the evening.
I'm also one of those do-as-you-go dorks. And I consider myself fairly obsessive (like I said...issues), but taking the garbage out every day exceeds even my OCD needs. I've been known to leave a coffee cup or 2 in the sink...gives me something to do while the coffee is brewing in the morning and I am trying to remember my name.
We're pretty clean in general, so a lot of what's on the list is taken care of (dishes are done right away when we're done with them, trash gets taken out when it's full, etc.).
But what I make sure to do before bed is get my breakfast and lunch ready to go (more lunch, breakfast if it's something I have to make), get my clothes ready for the morning, and straighten the couch cushions.
I also read right before I go to bed: it helps me relax. I read until I start nodding off; otherwise, I can't get to sleep.
I hate washing the dishes...detest it. So I try to wash as I cook and eat to keep them from ever piling up.
We have 5 kids, a household of 7 can make a bag of trash a day (not always).
They do the dishes and wipe down the counters. Delegation is key in a household this big.
1. make sure the coffee pot is set and on the timer
2. double check the door locks
3. refill wine glass
4. take hot shower
5. cool down and finish wine
Too much activity for bedtime. I am very mellow by time for lights out. But I do all of these things in the morning before leaving for work. So nice to come home to a cleaned up space.
Я на ночь, просто слушаю ambient.
Before I go to bed:
1) Lock Doors
2) Program Coffee Maker
3) Story time for 2 small children (20 mins, lots of snuggling and laughing)
4) Tuck in 2 small children still smiling from laughing
5) Tuck in 12 year old Daughter. (Tell her she is beautiful, that I love her and to have sweet dreams)
6) Tuck in 15 year old son (5 minutes of chit chat about high school gossip, tell him I am proud of him for finishing his homework, and that I love him)
7) Leave the rest that doesnt really matter!
P.S. Where did you get those orange sheets & pillow cases? Love the color!!!
I've always thought I was a slob, frankly, since my dad and my sister are compulsively neat people who would never allow anything to be out of place for a minute (well, dad wouldn't, but he lives with mom, who leaves stuff everywhere). But I feel very tidy after reading this post since I always do the dishes and clean the kitchen immediately after eating; you've made my day! Of course the rest of my house is a mess. ; )
I'm a slob! We often have dirty dishes on the counter, though if it happens to be a clean kitchen, I wash the dishes before I even serve the food - go figure.
Yeah paper towels can add up when you've got a cat that likes to puke all over the floor at least once a week. ;)
great ideas. I do the trash thing, the outwear, and sink thing. I also get my coffee ready for the AM. ALso I set out my gym bag each night.
Notes go on my Iphone..as I was always losing the notes on paper here and there.
In addition to things already mentioned, these also are done daily, often near bed time: Gather the trash from the wastepaper baskets into the garbage bag. Sweep the patio. Empty the dogs' outdoors water bowl and bring it indoors. Arm the security system. Remove and hang the dogs' collars. Store the TV remotes. Turn down the phones' and answering machines' volumes. Turn the air filters to the highest settings.
If I cooked dinner and dirtied a bunch of dishes I wash them at night. If I had toast for dinner or ramen noodles or something that barely dirtied a dish (or a cup for water or tea) I'll leave those in the sink overnight to be washed in the morning.
I live alone and the time it takes for water to boil and bread to get toasty for breakfast is just about perfect timing for me to finish washing easy dishes.
All washing folded and put away . Clean the sink every night . yes i am ocd . All of my child's toys put away .
I can't do a lot of stuff right before bedtime as it tends to give me insomnia. Before bed I like to talk with the hubby, relax, maybe flip through a magazine. Something entirely undemanding. I don't want to be running around frantically trying to fit in cleaning in the last 10 minutes of my day, nor do I want to be nagging my husband to do it. If it didn't get done earlier, it's not urgent enough that it can't wait.
I am a tidy freak according to my friends and family, but I tidy in little spurts. My evening tidying takes 15 minutes max. And when I clean, I do it for 20 minutes max daily (I set a timer). I stop when the 20 minutes are up. It's amazing how much you can accomplish in that time, and if you do it every day, you don't NEED to spend extra time cleaning on weekends or before company comes over. Your place is always looking good. I LOOK like a tidy freak, but I never put anymore than a total of 30-35 minutes a day into keeping my place spotless.
i do do these things and more, but really they take much more than five minutes. In the last five minutes before going top bed, i'm probably just clearing my mind of the day's experiences and doing a little meditation or a little stretching.
Wow. People are different... you know... like some wear red shoes and others don't have the spirit to do so... some wear locs and others straighten their hair everyday.
It is why there is are so many choices for decorating your living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc. So, some leave dirty dishes and others do not. By the way, not everyone has a dishwasher or dressing room either. Thanks for the tips, AT.
My cat would like to add, "Clean the litter box" to this list... :)
I'd add putting out clothes for the next workday. Cuts down on hopping-around-freezing time in cold New England bedrooms!
Recently I've been getting out my clothes for the next day so that I can jump right into them the next morning. It makes for a lot less indecision the next morning! The last few days I've been trying hard to get all of the dishes in the dishwasher before bed. It's a new habit, but I hope I can keep it up.
win a sudoku game...atleast try.
We try to produce minimal waste, so for us it is mostly recycling ready to go out the door in the morning, but yes, these are good tips otherwise!
And my morning version would include making the bed! There is nothing worse than arriving home from a busy day and the bed looks like a crazy mess. Somehow a made bed makes everything look better, even if it isn't perfect.
Impossible to do those 5 things in 10 minutes.
I'm a big fan of the night-before list. Makes for sweeter, more carefree dreams, too ;-)
i was like that until i had a daughter.
Well... it looks like each and every one of you are doing way too much work! Our family of four share the jobs you listed. Why have one person pick up the mess of others that made it. Do we have are fights over who does what... you bet, but giving in will never set a good example.
You seem to have a remote camera perched in my kitchen window, I do this every night despite occasional moans from the rest of the family. But it doesn't take 10 minutes, more like 1/2 an hour. Still VERY MUCH worth the trouble; it's very difficult for me to sleep knowing that the kitchen needs cleaning up.
Also, before sleeping I get the coffee machine cleaned, loaded and ready to start brewing at 5:50AM, and every other day get a bread ready in the bread machine to be done baking as soon as the coffee is ready. Good coffee and fresh bread really help to make it possible to wake up in the morning.
I miss throwing out trash nightly in my former apt. building's dumpster. (sigh)
Our current apt. building only allows for trash pickup 2x per week and recycling pick up 1x per week. For fear of attracting 'intruders,' I leave things like empty pizza boxes in the fridge till recycling day... much to the chagrin of my husband who expects pizza to be in the box.
I loved reading all these...funny /realistic and relatable..but..um, the ones I found relatable were the ones that...left dirty dishes in the sink..or at least rinsed out their coffeemakers..best was 'fallingup' enjoying her eve with her children in each their unique way..: ) but I mainly spend the last ten minutes before bed is wishing BAD that a few of my fave 'shows' were on at NINE>>NOT TEN>>!
Only at AT would people be so horrified about someone else's full trash bag at the end of the day.
Sometimes, I wonder if people ever grow up at all!
I/we do the nightly clean-up after dinner but a good bit before bed (close to bed time is for winding down, not revving up with cleaning). Dishes are done, trash is in place, recycling is sorted, things are picked up. It makes the next day SO much easier and keeps things tidy.
sounds like the scene in the honeymooners when ralph is the janitor. alice takes a call from a tenant who says. "eureka! my garbage can is full!"
Great list. The trash thing doesn't really apply to us (we don't generate much). I'd add setting up the coffee maker, packing lunches, topping off the cats' kibble, and laying out my clothes for the next day (after checking my calendar and the weather). This time of year will find me tending the woodstove just before turning in. Call it 45 minutes, not 10.
Never never never do the dishes before bed. The day is just too damned long to do one more chore!
I make a list of what I have to do the next day. When I wake up in the morning, I have forgotten what I'm supposed to do.
Hmm. I thought I was lazy...this confirms it. My list (not in order of importance):
1 - have a glass of wine
2 - read a couple of chapters of a book
3 - be thankful my kid is home safe and sound
@first5times -- I'm with you; I take my trash out once a week, unless I have something really malodorous in the trash. But in general, I agree with the original post; it's good to get your dishes washed and things generally in order before going to bed.
1. lock doors & windows,
2. kiss my kids,
3. kiss my wife,
4. pat my pets,
5. turn off lights.
I'm the only human in my household, but I have six chihuahuas and a cat, and I also do work at home that requires daily shredding. Therefore, it's easy for me to generate a large garbage bag per day. I have two large garbage bins outside that hold the bags until the bins are full and it's time to visit the dump.
I would add:
Turn on electric blanket.
There's nothing better than climbing into a pre-warmed bed in the winter time!
These are great ideas...but there's no way this only takes 10 minutes! Maybe for a single person or couple even...but for a family of five...no way.
Where I live (in Dublin, Ireland) and we have three bins - a green one for paper and plastics which is collected for free, a brown one for compostable waste (food and garden waste) which is collected for a smallish fee and a black one for everything else, which is collected for a bigger fee. It definitely encourages sorting and recycling of waste as it's more expensive to throw out non-recyclables.
I start by making my bed every morning. Also, I practice a "clean as you go" system while cooking, so there is no mess to clean after dinner - just rinse off a plate or two for the dishwasher. This leaves time for a bed time routine that actually promotes sleep:
1. Put on jammies.
2. Wash face and brush teeth.
3. Assemble shower items and clothes for the morning.
4. If my partner is out of town, call him and profess my love. If he is in town . . . well - you know.
5. Pray
As for garbage, I align with the bag-a-week crowd.
I'm transfixed by the fact that a much more varied article has turned into a garbage debate. Look at all these posts about garbage! Look at how judgemental and incensed many are!
I, too, generate and dispose of garbage, trash, and recycling, but it doesn't exercise more than two or three brain cells.
I think fallingup said it all in a most pleasant way---
In no particular order:
- Make lunch and put in fridge
- If I'm planning to buy lunch, make sure I have enough cash in the wallet
- Watch dishes and pots, brush off sink residue
- Clean sink strainer
- Tie off trash (sometimes)
- Turn down thermostat to turn off wall heater in living room (in winter - I live in a mild climate)
- If I'm bicycling to work the next day, check the tire pressure, seat height and position, and chain lubrication
- Make sure front door is locked
- Be grateful
1. I try to do the dishes while I'm cooking because I hate having to do them after I just made a dish with multiple ingredients (measuring cups, measuring spoons, prep bowls etc). My mom always taught me to go to bed knowing the dishes were all washed. Plus, living in nyc I fear the cockroaches.
2. My coat rack is always used!
3. this is where I am guilty. It will take me forever to organize books, magazines, gameboy, dvd's, etc back to where they go.
4. Trash is not so bad....I understand the 1 bag a day... Living in NYC its usually the small grocery bag everyone!!! calm down!
5. I love lists but never really thought about doing them at night... will have to force myself to try it out.
Usually before bed, it's taking the dogs outside, changing the water in their bowl (they tend to drink a lot of water in the middle of the night), doing my girly skin regime, and trying to read at least one chapter of whatever book I'm reading at the moment. :)
so sweet james manli! as it should be..love 'pat the pets' you are a kind man! : )
I wash my face, play laser with the cats, look at Flipboard for a bit, and then go to bed.
In the city where I live, you're not allowed to put trash out until the night before. Reason=rats. Trash is once a week, recycle once a week. Most of my "trash" is recyclable, but I try to buy things with as little packaging as possible. A bag of trash every day? Wow!
I like you MarciaR!
Check, check and check! I would add one more thing - go through mail. File, pay, shred or recycle.
I used to do all these things before I met my Fiance. Lol. But on a good day my list is: return things to their rightful place, check weather, lay-out kids clothes/items, charge the mobile phone + make lists.
I make a list of things To-Do, Buy, Find (for a very curious 7yo son). I would like to say 'Just Google it' but I don't want our son to think I don't know myself or I'm ignoring him.
My addition is sort clothing. In our laundry room, we have a divided hamper. Before I go to bed, I try and remember to sort the clothing I wore that day into the appropriate loads. This helps cause that way I know when I have a full load of laundry ready to do, and I can add it onto my list for the next day.
Personally, I do the dishes in the morning. I don't go to work right now - I take care of my sick aunt and uncle, and go to school. If i don't wake up early enough to do the dishes before class, I'm generally a zombie in class. I dislike doing dishes, and find it's easier for me to do them when I wake up, while nobody else in the house is awake to distract me from it. Plus, getting the thing I hate most out of the way in the morning gives me a sense of accomplishment, which normally leads to me getting more done in the day.
Good list. My additions:
1) Put keys, phone and wallet/bus pass in the same place every night. (Ja, I've missed the bus looking for my keys. Blargh.)
2) Check all the doors and windows.
3) Make sure our 7-year-old's homework folder is in his back pack.
I absolutely love this!!! I am going to start this plan right away. I am very disorganized and am need some structure for the new year!! Thanks.
*and need.
I like to pick up the kitchen and program the coffee pot. I also pack up my book bag and put everything next to my purse (cell phone, keys, etc) so I'm not searching for them in the morning. As far as trash goes, we don't have pick-up and have to drive to our trash/recycling center, which is only open for four hours on Saturdays. Leaving it outside is not an option due to wildlife (I live in Vermont). I like to use those netted bags that oranges and potatoes come in from the grocery store (no food trash, thanks to garbage disposal), tie it up at the end of the week and go. Recycling goes to a bin in the laundry room.
As inconvenient and un-fun as it is to do chores at night, in the morning when I'm clumsy, slow-witted, and drowsy it's worse. Although I was a morning person many years ago, doing chores at night now takes me the least time. Also, I sleep better feeling ready for the next day.
I am trying to change my ways of letting the house be a mess. Hate housework but I am sweeping a few times a week. Keeping a handle on dishes. Things are getting better. I think most of the things to do before you go to bed are at least a half an hr work but looks so worth it.
Especially after a party I deliberately leave my fragile, antique dishes for the next morning (rinsed but unwashed). I enjoy the morning reminiscenes and I do NOT want anyone helping me with the fragile (still unchipped) things my family has had for over 100 years.
This sounds like more than 10 minutes of work to me...
lol@ Really? haha! Yes, it is more than 10 minutes. It doesn't take me 10 minutes to wash dishes, which is why the sink is full now. I guess I COULD use my study breaks to wash them instead of post on this site...
With food trash- I put them in the freezer. I live alone so it's not a problem; I find a ziploc or shopping bag and put scraps in there and toss in the freezer. Why? because one hot summer day, when I had left the windows open, my house had a couple of flies and the trash was full of maggots.
*shiver*
Oh, on my list: dust and shower. I had a severe allergy attack last week because I'd gotten lazy. That lead to a major cleaning fest that pretty much swallowed my Friday night :p
10 minutes? I'm so bleeping tired when i go to bed, it probably takes 10 minutes just to set the 2 alarms to assure I can get up for work the next day...oh yeah, since I work outside I check out the weather report and messages on the phone.
Good list, here's my top picks (the lazy woman's list):
1. Check clothes to ensure everything is cleaned and repaired.
2. Put shoes away.
3. Watch TV
4. Do the crosswords
5. Eat a snack.
My list looks like that because I do things in the house as I go. Sometimes I get into a cleaning frenzy and go gonzo, but my house is pretty tidy. That's all I'm fit for when I get home from the day's activities.
I didn't read all the posts but only found one that mentioned being thankful her kids were home safe and in their beds. Yes, after doing a few quick chores (and your partner, if you have one or fantasize about doing Cary Grant!) being grateful for what you have and blessing everyone you love then time to catch some zzzzz's.
I'm compulsive about neatness and organization so I NEVER leave anything on the sink overnight. I can't sleep restfully if everything isn't the way it's suppose to be. It's a lot of work - but it works for me.. There's a framed poster over my headboard that reads "always kiss me goodnight" and that basically says it all.
My household of three adults, a dog, a several cats has no trouble filling a bag of garbage a day, let me tell you. And to the woman who said she only went through one roll of paper towels a year, should I scoop the cat vomit up with my hands or something? Sorry, but paper towels are a valuable commodity in my house.
As for my night-time routine, I generally scoop the litterbox(es) (better than doing that first thing when I wake up), put away laundry, have some sort of snack and beverage and then pass out watching something on netflix.
I'm surprised more people didnt put meditation...
I pick up living room, wipe down kitchen, meditate, make tea or hot cocoa, read a bit, set my alarm on my iphone, turn on the fan and turn off the light.
