My mom recently purchased an iMac &mdash her first and only Apple product. She had a Dell laptop and was a little worried about a keyboard and mouse (they weren't included in the purchase). She called to ask how much a keyboard and mouse would cost and I offered to send her our Apple white USB keyboard and mouse. There was only one problem..
We've had that white keyboard for over five years and it had been sitting in a box for quite some time (see my post about How Do You Discard Your Tech?). There was no way I was going to send my mother a dirty keyboard. Believe it or not, I've never cleaned a keyboard before so this was going to be my first time.
I turned to the internet and found some great suggestions. If I hadn't promised to send it to her as soon as possible, I would have ordered the Cyber Clean Keyboard Cleaner. Instead, I turned to a video I found on YouTube and painstakingly removed each and every key, used a combination of Q-tips and mascara brushes to get that sucker back to its glory days.
If you're in my position, instead of searching all over the internet &mdash just reference these previous Unplggd posts:

A magic eraser will have it sparkly white in no time. works great on all those darn white apple products. I use an air compressor to blow out all the keys, canned air will work too, just a bit more pricey.
...depending on how recently this was, a keyboard and mouse should be included with the purchase.
It was an iMac a coworker was selling. They were upgrading, but keeping their mouse and keyboard.
I love Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I wrote a song about it which I enjoy singing while cleaning. The lyrics are Mr. Clean Magic Eraaserrrrrrr! Sing it very excitedly with a superhero attitude while holding the Magic Eraser aloft. However, I have experienced rub marks left behind (on walls, furniture). I’m not sure I would try it on my iAnything but will not discourage others - just noting the rub marks.
Just put the keyboard in a dishwasher or wash it in the shower. Let it dry for two days and it's just like new.

TomA do you really mean this?????!!!!
That image is priceless. It made me feel like my current keyboard set up -which I would give a sanitation rating of a "C" really isn't all too bad. Love that he or she has sprudel & gin and what looks like a foil wrapped baked potato. My question is what is this person so intently writing?
TomA really means it. It'll be fine as long as you let it fully dry before plugging it back in.
that is a terrible suggestion. Yes, if you let it fully dry it should still work. BUT, over time the electrical contacts will begin to corrode making the keyboard useless.
I visited my local Fry's last week. They make dishwasher washable keyboards! The ones I saw were only $25.
that has to be the most disgusting, trashiest, filthiest keyboard i have ever seen. so sick.
mntngr, the pcb is far more likely to corrode if you let coffee and coke sit there forever. If the unit is rinsed thoroughly and allowed to completely dry, there should not be a problem.
How about this for sprucing up your keyboard using absolutely nothing and requiring next to zero effort:
Step 1. Look down at your keyboard.
Step 2. Look up at the picture of the disgusting keyboard.
Step 3. Now look back down at your keyboard.
Step 4. Look again at the picture.
Repeat these four simple steps until you finally realise just how CLEAN your keyboard really is.... well, comparatively anyway...
