In the past we’ve sung the praises of a few deceptively simple IKEA designs with a plethora of uses. Today it’s the LACK wall shelf unit’s turn, which is a much more versatile piece than you might think. By twisting and turning and stacking it, you can put this $49 shelf to work in your home in myriad ways.

Above: In a small bedroom, the LACK shelf can function both as nightstand and extra storage. At just under 12 inches wide, you can tuck it into just about any corner right next to your bed for double duty. Image from IKEA.

If you don’t even have room for a nightstand, a LACK shelf unit mounted above the bed can do the trick, without taking up any floor space at all. Just be extra careful when securing it on the wall so you don’t get a very unpleasant surprise in the middle of the night. (Also of note, we especially love how this bedroom, from IKEA, made the shelf nearly disappear with a black-on-black look. Super chic.)

Saundra from Lil Lamb Lost used a LACK shelf to organize the shelves of her closet. Provided your shelves are strong enough, this is a great option for your closet, because not only do you gain the little cubbies, but you also create a whole new shelf above.

Outside of the bedroom, you can also pair the shelf with a desk to create a workspace with plenty of nooks for stowing things away. Image from IKEA.

Now you’re really thinking outside the box: why not take the LACK shelf and flip it, so the shelf side is facing into the room? You might need to get a little creative with the mounting hardware, but this is a great way to create some semi-concealed storage and reduce visual clutter. Image from Welke.
