Name: Alex and Wendy and their adorable pets, Lulu and Mel
Location: Alexandria, Virginia
Size: 2,000 square feet
Years lived in: 9
Situated just off the main street in the historic district of Old Town Alexandria, Alex and Wendy's home is the epitome of the classic elegance that defines the city's character. With a beautifully traditional color scheme and period details like transom windows and cast iron rim locks, it's hard to believe that it hasn't always served as such a vivid reminder of the area's rich colonial history.
When Alex and Wendy found the nineteenth century rowhouse in 2003, it looked like a run-down bachelor pad that left less imaginative buyers unimpressed. A series of previous owners - unconcerned with preserving its tradition - inflicted one impulsive repair job after another, handing down a list of failed projects for its incoming owners to undo. Friends and family asked the couple why they'd want to take such a gamble on their first home, but they were able to look past the patchy flooring and sloppy paint jobs to see its unexposed potential. And though it has taken them nearly a decade to breathe life back into the old home, those that once questioned their judgment now come to them for design advice. Their aqua-hued front door serves as a vibrant prelude to their charismatic home, where a devotion to its original charm can be seen from the moment you cross its threshold.
Inside, the home is a showcase of Victorian revival. While a lot of young homeowners are lured by the accessibility of more modern renovations, Alex and Wendy have gone the extra mile to restore their surroundings. Down the street at their local library, they've pored over historical records in search of clues about the design elements that may have contributed to its original look. Using this research, they have thoughtfully sourced period authentic details to reintroduce to their home. Impressively, they have done all of this without compromising their contemporary tastes. Integrating vintage features like steeple-tipped door hinges and bold patterns with modern amenities like custom closets and whole house audio, they have created a stylish space that remains delightfully reminiscent of its origins without feeling magisterial.
Since 2009, they have documented their experiences as DIY preservationists on their blog, Old Town Home, where they offer amusing insight and helpful how-to instructions for the all-too-familiar pains of transforming an outdated infrastructure into something that is both convenient and livable, but also respectful of its history. Together, Alex and Wendy have done just that - cultivating a stunning composite of old and new, and proving that sometimes the risk is worth the reward.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Traditional and respectful of the period of our home (1880s row house in Old Town Alexandria, VA), while tastefully introducing contemporary elements and technologies.
Inspiration: Pinterest, decorating magazines, HGTV, Sarah Richardson, Candice Olson, and other homes in the area.
Favorite Element: Our location. We love living in an urban historic district, and have wonderful neighbors.
Biggest Challenge: Making the time outside of our day jobs to tackle all renovation/restoration projects ourselves, as well as blog about our experiences on Old Town Home
What Friends Say: At first they were surprised we would buy "such a crappy" place. No joke. Now they mostly love our home, are impressed by the work we've done, and often ask for our help and advice.
Biggest Embarrassment: The amount of time some projects have remained undone. For example, we've had a bare, stripped door jamb in our upstairs hallway for eight years now.
Proudest DIY: Making the desk in the office (Alex). Transforming the guest bathroom from a 1980s monstrosity to a vintage inspired space with modern conveniences (Wendy).
Biggest Indulgence: Whole house audio system from Nuvo and Sonos (Alex), Thassos marble in the guest bathroom (Wendy).
Best Advice: Take your time and do it right. And definitely use high quality paint and supplies.
Dream Sources: Waterworks, high-end antique stores, boutique home furnishing retailers like Red Barn Mercantile and Random Harvest (in Old Town Alexandria).

Shaw's Original Fir...
The cats face in the first picture is HILARIOUS.
And you have a gorgeous home. Absolutely stunning
Stunning was my first thought, too. Truly gorgeous!
You've done a beautiful job transforming your home! The built in desk is amazing.
Absolutely gorgeous! Classic styles are my thing and I love how Victorian and yet airy and comfy it is. I live in Old Town too and often try to indiscreetly glance through the windows as I casually walk by these beautiful homes.
Yes! I love seeing house tours from the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia for those in the know). Your house is simply beautiful. All of your hard work has paid off. It is so refreshing to see young people embrace non-MCM decor every once in a while!
Your house is gorgeous and looks well loved and well-lived in. You had me with the China collection. lLve love love !
Love it!!!
Great vibes! This is such a classy, grown-up home.
I want to eat a big family Christmas dinner in that beautiful red dining room! I also really like the flow of the kitchen > tiled seating area > backyard section. And the teacup chandelier is adorable.
Bravo, Alex and Wendy! This is a heck of a first home.
I thought I recognized the couple in the photo here! Way to get an AT feature!
They've done some absolutely amazing work in this place, and run a very friendly blog too.
I had to create an account just so I could log in to say that I absolutely love every piece of decor in your home. I too am an animal lover and I love the photos of your pets.
The tea cup chandelier is just perfection. Your home looks like it's cool and comfortable in the summer and yet, warm and cozy in the winter.
Beautiful.
Just beautiful!!
fantastic! alex and wendy's have a *gorgeous* home - so meticulously restored and beautifully decorated. i've been wanting them to have an AT house tour for years and am so happy that it's finally happened :)
We live in the neighborhood and pass this house all the time. We always remark how beautifully it is maintained on the outside.
While the inside decor is not my style at all, I appreciate the effort put into it. And we certainly do love its curb appeal : )
This tour made me miss my Richmond row house very much, especially the shot of the backyard. But speaking of cool and comfortable in the summer? This is Virginia! I love the chandeliers, but I would die at night without a ceiling fan over my bed. That said, it is so beautiful, so tasteful. I want to go home and immediately remove at least ten things from each room!
I haaaaate homes that try to combine traditional and contemporary by putting traditional furniture in a builder-standard new house, but I think you guys did an awesome job with actually bringing contemporary into your renovations and balancing the amount of old-fashioned and newer furniture.
inspiring!
Nicely done, guys.
Not my style, but I love it, well done!
Could have used a few more pics of those adorable pets though!
What a warm lovely style! I love the red dining room and the gallery of your pets was cute.
live and work in the neighborhood, love random harvest and red barn as well.
It's gorgeous inside and out. It also seems so bright and airy. How do you get so many windows in a row house?
Thank you everyone for the very positive and kind words. Work on our house is definitely a labor of love, and we're glad we had an opportunity to share it in on Apartment Therapy.
Though the photos are wonderful and make our house look very complete, we are nowhere close to being finished with our renovations. If you like what you see in these photos, be sure to follow us on our blog, Old Town Home, where we will get into some serious detail on all things related to our house, living in Old Town Alexandria, and anything else we feel like oversharing on. We try to post new content every weekday and we love the opinions, ideas, and inspirations that come from our readers, so be sure to stop by often.
Love the diamond patterned walls. So pretty.
I love Old Town and your lovely home!
Wonderful all over. You seem to own my dream bed (the ornate dark-wood Victoria). And though I never like plates on a wall, the plates above your mantel might convert me. And here's another bravo for the built-in desk and lucite chair!
Now that's the way to add a fun, contemporary and updated vision while preserving the wonderful craftsmanship and history of an historic building.
I bow to you with gratitude.
Agree with Cei-face....the kitty's face is priceless and your home is gorgeous.
What a lovely home. What is the name of the color in the blue bathroom?
AT: Of course it's not a reminder of the town's "colonial" history- It was built in the 1880's! And please try to keep the terms restoration and renovation from being inter-changeable on your site, they are not the same thing.
To the homeowners: I applaud your efforts and hard work. Thank you. It's lovely.
Love the wall of plates!
Excellent. I found your home very well.It also seems so bright and airy.Color of the walls of the house is very pleasing.
Beautifully done. While it's not my personal taste, I'm originally from DC/Alexandria (live in L.A. now) and can appreciate the beauty and style of the home. I used to do the Old Town open home tours during the holidays, and can say that this home stands up nicely to the ones I've had the pleasure of visiting. You've preserved the style of the area, but have given it a modern twist. Wonderful!
I was so distracted by the link to the youtube video of the cat and dog fighting that I forgot about the housetour. PURE GENIUS (the video). The house is exquisite as well.
While I really loved the house, the red dining room is just not my taste. The bedroom, however, is perfection !
The one thing I wanted to know (which also happened to be the only thing not on the resources list :) is the amazing colour on the exterior of the house. It is stunning- who is it by and what shade? I've searched for ages for that exact colour!
Fantastic job! Not really my taste, but it all looks great except for the window treatments in the kitchen and sunroom - that fabric screams 1980s to me
This Mel cat looks like a very special character!
Awesome
Oh I'm so happy to see this couple and their home on AT- they have a great blog that I religiously follow.
It's nice to see pictures of the whole place at once- great job.
I love their anal retentive, OCD type attention to detail- I never knew what a "steeple hinge" was before I started reading their blog.
They did a wonderfully poignant tribute to the doggie that didn't make it and write with so much love for the pets that are with them now -my kinda people.
Great Job! That's the kind of space I would love spending time in.
While not my style, this home is beautiful and obviously loved. I'd take that master bedroom in a heartbeat.
But I can't believe there aren't more comments about your silly, adorable pets! I watched the YouTube video - your dog walks on the end tables? Hilarious.
Maybe I could live back east! Love the house!
The master bedroom is gorgeous. Perfectly balanced with that beautiful tree outside.
Beautiful home! Love the color of the front door - now to convince my husband how GREAT it would look on our house! I would kill for that bed - unfortunately usually run out of funds before good sense when I see something similar at auction. The brick wall and the built in desk - mmmmm. Saving lots of pictures for future ideas - thanks for sharing! Cute "family" pic!
Love the cat! Especially the look on her face in the main portrait. Classic. I have a cat so I know how funny they can be.
The house is lovely, not my style exactly but I love how you put everything together.
A beautiful home! Alex and Wendy have a keen eye for detail. Everything is thought out and carefully edited. Their home exudes warmth, comfort and beauty. Love their sunny kitchen. However, the best part of this tour is that ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL CAT! I'm in love with him :)
Beautiful home, I don't normally like old style but you did a wonderful job. Love the wall of plates!
Not my taste but gorgeous. They have done a fantastic job. The house is warm and welcoming and rich looking, and fitting for Alexandria. They master bedroom is stunning!!! And, I can't believe I'm saying this - that tea cup chandelier is incredible. Fun, interesting, all that stuff. All-in-all, this is quite a beautiful home.
Sign over the deed to the house and give me the cat, and no one gets hurt!!! Seriously guys, terrific job. Wishing you many years of happiness in this lovely home.
Sooooo cute. And yay pets!! :-)
HANDS DOWN one of the best tours I've ever seen on AT.
Love Love Love your place, I have a soft spot for old vintage homes with modern touch in my heart and your home is just perfect! Its a beautiful home, i can see the love poured into it!
LOVE this house (and the couple's blog is awesome as well!) It's so nice to see people showing that you CAN honor the history of a house while still making it perfectly workable for a modern lifestyle!
That kitteh's face is priceless.
This is one of my favorite tours. I love the color of the exterior door against the soft grey color and white trim. The house itself is wonderful with a lot of detail and character..but the decor is really beautiful and honors the period without too much fussiness. The dining room is so elegant..everything has a casual elegance and looks so homey. Love it.
This proves that good design is good design.....period. This is not my style at all but you can see how inviting, comfortable, elegant, thoughtful, homey, loved, this home is. Bravo.
I love this house. It's a nice change from the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic that seems to dominate AT, too!
Love, love love it! You two are creating a wonderful home, very beautiful!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Sorry we didn't include the exterior paint color in our rundown.
The house is Sherwin Williams "Anonymous" with Sherwin Williams "Pearly White" as the trim color.
Thanks for all of the compliments on our pets, we do love them very much, and they are quite the characters in our home. In case you're curious, our cat with the round/cute/odd/wonderful face is actually a Scottish Fold (without folded ears). He just turned 11 and is wonderful and perfect, and I'm pretty sure he's way smarter than our goofy dog Lulu, but we love her just the same.
Love this home! I used to live in Alexandria (live in Pasadena now) and really miss East Coast architecture. When can I move in?
The home is so welcoming. You had me at the exterior colors. Thanks for posting the main ext. colors, but do you happen to remember the name of the door color? I LOVE it. Also, the harlequin finish in the foyer- a pleasant surprise.
The front door color was a difficult decision, but we're really happy with it. It's called "Forida Keys" from Benjamin Moore. We wrote a post about the painting process and type of paint here: http://www.oldtownhome.com/2011/8/22/While-the-Cats-Away-the-Mice-Will-Play/index.aspx It's about 1/2 way down.
*Dream House* !!!!
Too much to "like", but I'll include my favorite from the first photo- I really like the door color with the gray brick, its really pretty.
Really love your house and your blog! I actually discovered it through a random website called oldhouses.com, that features present and past old historic homes for sale. I was searching for rowhomes, my favorite style. And i was pleasantly surprised to find you blog and this recent feature on apartment therapy!
Ok, and not to sound creepy, but I was on zillow.com tonight looking at prices in that area (we have considered moving back to DC many times) and is the house two doors down from yours for sale? I won't reveal the address, but I'm pretty sure it's really close to you guys! Hope you do more posts about the area on your blog! :)
