My daughter wanted a fairy tree in her room that she could sit inside and read books, climb the branches, and also have a top sitting area. I'm a professional video game artist and make virtual worlds for a living, so while I thought I could come up with the aesthetic idea, I was kind of un-prepared for the physical realities of this project. I used Disney set-design as my inspiration. Even though it was very difficult, I learned a huge amount along the way. It turned out pretty well, and she's so happy in her new room!
The main piece, of course, is the tree! It's built with a steel skeleton and concrete polymer applied to expanded metal lathe screen. The inside is wired for 12v and line voltage to the branches. The flooring is manufactured hardwood with cloth underlayment. The paint was from Sherwin Williams and is a mix of 12 different colors, all fairly saturated. I used glaze for the faux finish. My Imgur album provides a lot of extra detail if you'd like more photos.
