It happened by accident but I am now using an old oversized armchair as my desk chair. Carpal tunnel experts and physical therapists may gasp in terror but so far I love doing work in this unconventional cocoon of comfort. I feel like I have upgraded to First Class. Meanwhile, in my old workspace (the TV room), my ergonomically correct black high-tech monster of a desk chair spins alone.
Last month our home was hit with some kind of viral menace that left my husband and two children bedridden for days. Our bedroom became a mini clinic and I was the attending physician. To keep vigil over my patients, I made a little impromptu office in our (big) bedroom; I lugged my desktop computer downstairs and propped it on a West Elm Parson's desk. For seating I used what was at hand: the oversized armchair we inherited from my husband's bachelor days. To my surprise, the set up has been terrific.
Who knew a big old-fashioned armchair would be such a terrific desk chair? I doubt I am a poster child for optimal workspace ergonomics but so far I have no aches and pains to speak of. I sit upright at the end of the chair while typing. When reading or thinking (or procrastinating), I can scoot back and nestle into the chair's massive embrace. And here lies the one potential downside of the armchair as desk chair: I just may start napping mid-sentence...

White Enamel Flatwa...
Sounds heaven but how do you work like that????
Hi,
Do you have shopping info for these armchairs??
Thank You
I especially love the yellow chair in picture 3. Seems more practical than the others. Where is it from?
Oh my goodness, I am in love with your personal chair in the first photo. It's my favorite of the series.
I'm short and I like sitting low to the ground so my feet will touch the floor - don't laugh at me.
:(
Anyhoo, this kind of chair would just feel way too far away from my keyboard and I wouldn't be able to scoot the chair under the desk where I'm more comfortable. Maybe it works for taller people?
I had a former coworker five or so years ago who did this. Ever since then I've been meaning to switch to an armchair at my desk at home. (Possibly at work as well) So fun.
I've had this set up for the past couple of months, and I love it! I have an old, cushy Louis XVI armchair, and usually am wrapped up in a blanket with my legs crossed--couldn't think of a better way to work :)
So those ridiculous standing desks are out now? I can't keep up with these desk trends.
I had been using an armchair at my desk for about two years when I started having carpal tunnel symptoms, so there is a reason that the carpal tunnel experts gasp. I'm not saying it can't work, but you should be extra careful because CT is not fun.
Bah! Humbug! The Emperor has no clothes. This is a recipe for a life of chiropractic care. These chairs do not give you the proper support for working. They are great for reclining and relaxing, but when typing or writing, you are leaning forward and should have a chair that follows you forward and support your back. It should be adjustable to the point that your arms form a perfect letter "l" when working. Invest in a good chair like the Aeron by Herman Miller. Your back will thank you for many years to come.
I'd do this in a heartbeat except for the kneehole in my desk is too narrow to even accommodate a standard desk chair with arms.
I could never work in one of these. The arms of the arm chair would hinder my movement, I fear. Plus I'd be inclined to curl up with a good book and never get anything done. It does look inviting, of course!
Ouch. These chairs are so ergonomically incorrect, my arms and back are hurting just from looking at these pics!
I like it. I've always sat way back in my chair, feet propped up, even when typing. I'm not comfortable in ergonomically correct positions.
I love your chair, and would love to have inherited such a beaut from any bachelor, much less my husband. While the chair itself looks comfy, I doubt it'd be comfortable to work like that for long. Actually, i'd be more likely to nap in that chair. But it does look better than the regular office chair.
Many home offices are probably not really for working. Like mine, though I still spend a lot of time at my computer :)
I always sit in weird ergonomically incorrect positions, usually with my feet up in the chair, so this would work for me. Mine is not an arm chair -I have Piet Hein Eek's office chair because with the exception of some vintage chairs I think all office chairs look hideous... Mine was expensive but it's made with reclaimed oak and is super sturdy and will just look better with age. It will also be very easy to reupholster when that time comes. Conventional office chairs will inevitably find their way at the dumpster, but this one will outlive me.

I can't wait until I have more space and can do this! I daydream about it.... I understand the possible health risks, but I will take the risk as I spend only 1-2 hours/day maximum at my home computer. In the office I have a great computer chair.
Some of those chairs look just right for reading and napping to me, desk work not so much, since seating comfort is a very individual thing.
