Leah took a different approach when designing her daughter Ave's nursery. She designed the space to easily transition into Ave's toddler years. Leah also wanted to create a nursery that was minimalist and very organized. It is a small space, so it can easily get cluttered.

Working on a tight budget, Leah had to make compromises and get creative to make the most out of the design. She called in her interior designer friend, Jenika Kurtz, to help select furniture, lighting, and accessories. They were able to put together a beautiful nursery with Ikea and Etsy finds.
What was the inspiration for your nursery decor?
Creating a nursery that was fresh and inviting. I knew my color scheme would be gray, white, and coral from the beginning and based the design on the palette. Browsing online blogs, design magazines, and shopping helped me organize my vision to create a room that was unique and personal.
How did you chose your color scheme for the room?
I sell textiles in the commercial interior design industry and am lucky to spend many hours a day in design libraries. My favorite part of my job is helping interior designers review their designs and select fabrics for color schemes. Gray, white, and coral is a gorgeous palette, also one of my favorites, so it's no surprise I chose these colors for the nursery. I started the design process with the Quatrefoil by Alexander Girard accent fabric for the pillow. My good friend Jenika Kurtz, a talented interior designer in Los Angeles, headed with me to Michael Levine in downtown LA to hunt for the bedding fabric. Pretty much textile heaven! The rest of the room slowly came together as we layered texture upon texture to create an inviting yet cool space.
Kids grow up so fast, so it is important to create a room they can grow into. What did you do to create a room that transitions well into the toddler stage?
We made sure to purchase a crib that transitions from crib to toddler bed. This was definitely easy as there are many options for convertible cribs. I was also careful in selecting patterns that didn't look too "baby" and/or too pastel.
What are your tips for making the most out of a small nursery space?
It's a really small space and I wasn't just concerned with making it feel big. I wanted the room to have character and texture. Keeping a mostly neutral background with accents of color was also helpful. One little tip I learned from Jenika was to extend the curtain rod 12 inches beyond the edge of the window to create the illusion of a larger window and more space.
What was the biggest challenge when designing the nursery?
The biggest challenge was designing a room that would not only look beautiful for Ave, but also function as a small space. I'm a bit of a minimalist and hate clutter, so I was challenged with creating a space that was clean and not busting at the seams with baby gear. The woven cecil baskets are helpful in keeping Ave's smaller items organized and more importantly easy to find.
Can you tell me about how you customized the bookshelf.
The bookcase from IKEA was customized by lining the back with decorative paper. A budget friendly and very easy project! I used a non-toxic glue stick to adhere the paper to the back...the tough part was selecting graphic paper that I wouldn't grow tired of. I originally lined the bookcase with a smaller scale rice paper, but ended up reselecting the paper because the space needed more of a pattern with bold colors. It is a main focal point and inexpensive to create without looking cheap.
What are a few of your dream sources for decorating a baby's room?
Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing about the search and finding great deals. I LOVED Etsy.com. I originally selected a Noguchi light fixture and due to a ridiculous back order, I ended up reselecting the IKEA light. Amazing steal at IKEA and the light fixture casts these amazing shadows, which Ave loves!

White Enamel Four-P...
I love this room! It oozes soft and fuzzy while still being very modern and sophisticated. Where is the rug from? Is it durable?
Simply beautiful.
It was too neutral for me until I saw *pop!* the bookcase - love it!
LOVE IT! I'm trying to go for a similar look, except with mustard yellow as the accent.
Can you please share the paint color and brand?
AHHH! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this.
I just want to scoop that baby up and put her in my pocket! Except not really, because that's totally unsafe ;)
This nursery is stunning! Good job mama! Can you share the resource info for the glider?
my fave nursery tour ever. ever! love it!
One of my favorite Nursery tours as well!!! Love it!!
I used that orange floral paper for my wedding decor and I just loved it. I have a bunch left over and I think you've given me some nursery inspiration!
I love this!! The colors are great, it looks so neat, and I love the owl mobile! And oh my gosh, those curtains!!
Gorgeous room and such a step outside of the every day nursery. I love it's simplicity and sophistication. I am also curious about the rug. I saw a similar one on o.co but am concerned it wouldn't maintain it's gorgeous whiteness in our home with four children under the age of four. Any feedback on the rug is most appreciated!
We have the same window arrangement in our bedrooms. Would appreciate if you can share the source of your drapery hardware?
Loooove it!
wow
Id love the paint color name also!
What a lovely room. Cute curtains!
How sweet!
Beautiful room...the bedding fabric is lovely!
Lovely and peaceful room! And what a precious baby!
love it! i agree with the 'fuzzy and sophisticated' comment wholeheartedly! =)
absolutely lovely.
Amazing! Fresh and inviting. Can you note what paint you used?
is that a real baby laying on the dresser all by themselves? Kinda creepy and risky just for a photo.
so happy to see that everyone is enjoying sweet little ave's room!
the paint color is one of my favorites, 'wheat bread' from behr at home depot. it's a fantastic neutral.
love you leah and marcia!
Love the room and the colour scheme - so pretty!
I am planning to purchase the same crib and was wondering what are the dimensions of the crib skirt you had made (length x width x height)? Thanks!
Simply sensational! I especially love the window coverings. The colors are an inspiration.
This is the holy grail of nurseries as far as I'm concerned:) Every time I see that crib I love it more. And I have seen those curtains before but was unsure of what they would look like in an actual room. Looks great.
Gorgeous! I love what you did with the bookcase. Is that the Pebble Rug from West Elm? It looks fantastic!
One of the lovelist nursries I have seen! I too would love to know the paint color and brand.
Enjoy your beautiful baby!
fresh and lovely and unexpected. you're going to raise a bright child with an uncluttered mind in that room.
i knew when i saw this that the paint had to be wheat bread from behr. our whole house is that color, and i think it works so beautifully with everything. everyone who asked about the paint color, i can recommend it wholeheartedly. for another example of it, i'm pretty sure that nicole from making it lovely has used it in her kids' nursery and it's transitioned so well from a pink little girl's room to a boy's room. i really can't say enough about this color.
also, this nursery is absolutely beautiful. i might have missed it, but i can't believe no one has commented on how wonderful the art is. shel silverstein, right?
Thank you for all of the sweet comments! We are loving Ave's nursery.
Rug - West Elm rug from a few years ago, but I believe the Pebble Rug is the updated version. Believe it or not, the rug has held up wonderfully and you can spot treat.
Art is a framed page of The Giving Tree, a favorite book of mine as a child.
Drapery hardware - potterybarn kids
Love this so much! This is sort of the color scheme we're going with for our daughter's nursery... though with a little dash of plum mixed in!
Stunning! I love, love, love everything about this nursery. Great job. The curtains are beautiful as is the perfect placement of the butterflies.
i love those curtains. i saw similar ones at anthropology with a one million dollar price tag (or something like that :P) thanks for sharing
I love the curtains, and I think this is the first time I've seen the ikea daisy light and actually liked it!
Sublime :)
Your nursery is beautiful!!!!!!!! I want to re-start mine now, it's so perfect. I have a question for you, I am thinking of putting a changing pad on my dresser, but the changing pad is as big as the dresser top. Do you have a changing pad ? Is what the baby is lying on your changing pad ? I just think it would look too bulky, any suggestions ??
Thanks
Sophie
Oops i just noticed in the tour photos you do have a changing pad on the dresser, the dresser must be quite large. It looks fantastic!
I am so jealous...
LOVE this...
Where is the crib from?
Also, how about the chair? Looks like potterybarn kids, but which model?
Really, really beautiful. Would love to know where you found the chair/glider. Can you share info on the brand or model?
love this nursery & i am doing similar things, ie. gray & pink tones. could you respond with the color and brand of paint you used? having a super hard time finding the right shade of gray, so tricky...
the coral tones are a breath of fresh air, so beautiful!
Love this room!! Where is this beautiful crib from! Its a must have!
Love your room! My husband is very against pink so this photo inspired him and I both! Plus, he is a penny pincher and loves IKEA. I too am adding a touch of plum or lavender to the room as another commented.
I just wanted your help, where did you find the crib bedding and the chair? The chair is the hardest to find at a good deal! HELP!
Thank you for sharing this!
@minnihollz38 so glad ave's nursery could help you and your husband agree on something :) if i remember correctly, the chair is from pottery barn baby and the bedding was custom.
Hi there, gorgeous room and I LOVE the curtains! Can you share the name of the crib skirt fabric, please?
We ended up finding a chair on Craigslist we are going to make a slipcover for! Thank you for the info! Any ideas what the names of the fabric on the bedding are? I believe the bumper is from Sandi Henderson, but she does not have a striped fabric collection so I was curious what you found to match. Thank you so much for the inspiration and help! I can't wait to hopefully share our room with our baby girl in August.
Lovely room, with such a light but warm touch.
Question:
I can't figure out where the laundry basket and diaper pail are hiding - can someone solve this mystery?
