Designer: Jen Chu
Client: Chi
Location: Fort Greene — Brooklyn, New York
My friend, Chi, grew up in this room. She moved out for college, and when she came back, the room seemed to need a face lift more than ever. The dingy paint with the poor lighting made the room unbearably drab. The lack of storage made it impossible to maintain a tidy space. Fortunately, her room had great bones with plenty of wall space and nice hardwood floors. After a couple weeks of careful planning and with a little elbow grease, we re-vamped this room in 2 days.
Prior to the makeover, the room had not changed one bit in over a decade. I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for her, so I wanted to design a space that was timeless enough to be appealing in 1, 5, or even 20 years.
The budget for this project was small considering we needed to replace everything in the room, so the goal was to use mostly furniture from IKEA but accessorize thoughtfully so the room came off as luxurious. I decided on cool, soothing colors and versatile furniture pieces, dressed up with subtle glamorous touches.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
all grown up and lovely. great job with the budget. $3K, but will not go out of style because its so classic and neutral!
Nice work!
Simply lovely. Nothing too trendy to make the composition obsolete in a few years ... and it still looks like there are ways for her to easily personalize the space as she settles in!
PS. I love the nightstand - but it isn't listed on the source list! Any leads?
Great Job! She will never leave home now.
@LGarcVA The nightstand is from Target. Search "Glass Accent Table."
Total transformation - well done! In all that work, I'm happy to see you squeezed in a DIY - the headboard is one of my favourite elements in this room. Looks like a fun project to tackle with a good friend!
Nice work, ladies!!
The before pics look like a candidate for the Clean House crew, but the after pics look soothing and serene. An excellent space for Chi to start working on the next phase of her life - good luck to her!
Source for desk chair? Looks great!
Wow!!!!! It's A-MAZING. I recognize a lot of favorite IKEA pieces. You did a great job making the space personal and unique.
I wish I could get clients to understand that one room, even from BUDGET sources, can still (easily) total up to $3000... NOT including labor!
That is more than improvement - i wouldn't recognise it! Great space now.
Love it! But I do wish the artwork above the bed were bigger. Seems oddly sized.
@greenbayou
Ikea's tobias.
Good job! Paint color?
Love the sophisticated look of it and all seems like decent pieces she could take with her when she moves - unless it was the mom and dad footing the bill.
Looks great. I'd also like to know the paint color. Thanks!
Hotel chic. Very soothing. Love the gray walls that can accommodate any decor. I'm gaga over that mirror. Bravo!
Amazing work, and deliberate.
I don't really know what to do with my childhood room because I don't really live there anymore. It has become a shrine where I remember a lot of childhood memories once I walked in...
I can't remove them in the name of development, especially when it's not necessary right now... I guess I'm a hoarder. :)
Does anybody else have this problem?
I hate, hate, hate having to reload the whole page to load another image. Get a decent slideshow player.
Wow what an extraordinary transformation. Great job. Love it. Especially love how nothing really sticks out as "Ikea." Everything looks luxe, upscale & sophisticated. Bravo!
Fabulous!
I am TOTALLY on board w/ mstar's comment/complaint. Scrolling up & down to read the captions sucks too. I guess what I'm saying is, overall, the layout of this otherwise awesome blog? Well, it blows. :/
You can't even tell that this is the same room, and I don't mean that in a good way. Sorry, but this is not a favorite of mine. These before and after photos need some "work in progress" photos. The new color choices and layout, although better than before, are so dull and boring. I do like the bits of teal blue, but IMO there's not enough of it. And overall, the room looks VERY masculine for your female client.
great job, please share the paint color!
Very good job for such limited space. I love everything but the most Studio Trio Grommet-Top curtains.
@Pak-Kei M., A similar situation developed in my husband's parents' house. After they died, clearing it for sale was terribly difficult. After finishing that sad task, I avoid hoarding for the sake of my heirs, as well as for my own benefit now. Any unnecessary surplus that you release will help them now, and help you later.
It's nice that when she's not there her parents now have an excellent guest room.
I love that works as an at home after college bedroom and after the client has a chance to move out it is a lovely guestroom as well. I'm sure the client's parents appreciate the upgrade as well. It looks great. Please let us know the paint color.
Beautifully decorated room. Just goes to show you that possessing a good eye for design and style trumps being a label snob.
Where is that mirrored side table from? That piece really elevates the room. It's cute. But I agree more color would wake it up a bit. Pops of yellow maybe? Something happy :)
@burnttoast Progress pics are on her blog.
re: Blog and its shortcomings; I hear that they are/have been working on a new interface this Summer. Looking forward to hearing more about it!
The first thought that went through my mind was the same that others have commented on as well; the parents have a great guest room once its current inhabitant moves out.
Someone thought the colour scheme is very masculine; why? Grey and white is fine with women too.
Well, I will just come out as a jerk and say there is something really odd about a 20-something college graduate that would hire a decorator and drop $3k to renovate a room in her parent's house. Her priorities are askew.
However, the room, although a bit cold for my taste, is very aesthetically pleasing.
@HouseBee et al:
Perhaps this is a cultural thing (ie: a daughter living with her parents until she's married) or perhaps, as others have suggested, the room just needed to be updated for her when she's there, and as a guest room when she's not. It could also be a financial thing (living at home to save up for a down payment). Either way, it's not for us to judge her "priorities," and it's a beautiful transformation!
the color is Benjamin Moore #1472 Silver Chain
@nesting_fish, thanks for being open minded. I think a lot of comments are made w/o sufficient information. The whole house needed some love, and this room was the perfect place to start. A good investment, in my book, if your family plans on staying put :)
I also think it was a worth while investment in her parents home. Shoot, they probably paid for her college education. So this is a nice pay back thank you to her parents, who will have a lovely updated room after she moves out.
As for the comment about the color choice not being feminine enough. Not true. I love that color combination. Not all girls/women like pink or whatever other color one might assume is a "girl" color.
I LOVE it! Thanks for sharing the paint color! It is a little masculine but I think it's like a woman wearing a man's clothes. When done right, it makes her look even more feminine. This room was done right. :)
First off, this is apartmenttherapy.com, NOT lifetherapy.com so pls don't judge and post your opinions on something that has nothing to do with transforming and making over a room. I don't need to justify to strangers why I decided to stay and live with my parents.
I am thoroughly enjoying this room and when I do move out, every piece of furniture can be brought with me to my new place so its not an entire waste of money. A huge majority of the budget was spent on buying furniture pieces anyways.
Thanks Botany for the color comment
Chi, I live in a different country to my parents and will soon be updating my bedroom in their house so that I have a place to live in when I'm back, and they have a fabulous guestroom when i'm not! Good on you for taking the step to improve your surroundings for your wellbeing and happiness!
I love grey and white and even more so, love that you guys made it look incredibly chic on such a budget!
I really love this transformation. I have a room about the same size and layout, only I have a big closet where the bed is and there is no door on the wall across from the bed. Great work! I'm actually looking for a desk almost exactly that size. All in all, great!
Love it, what a massive difference :)
The room is gorgeous, what a transformation!
The paint color is Benjamin Moore #1472 Silver Chain (I found it on the blog)....love the color, might do my own bedroom in that.
looks good. Partially because things have been tidied up. Lets see the After-pictures with the drawers opem, stuff hanging pout, clitter on the floor, bed not made, etcetera. This is something i often wonder about. Yes, it is a nice design, but it looks not lived in.
sorry about the many typos!
Beautifully done! I would have added more of the blue accents.
I love how people post comments they would never say to someone's face.
I think its a beautiful room. and yes, it would also be a great guest room if Chi decides to move out.
i also think its nobody's business where one chooses to live. its amazing how people find it hard to understand other cultures. In India its considered rather cold and cruel to leave your old parents and move on - when you start earning it is time to pay back by taking care of them. A lot of Asian cultures work that way. Not that this is the space to be giving gyan (wisdom) - but hey, they shouldnt have been commenting on it in the first place!
you go girl, Chi
very nice transformation! i don't think it looks so much masculine as grown up.
Comments about the room:
-Positives:
The new layout and some of the color schemes really invites light into the room, a very much needed improvement.
Once a small looking room, the addition of mirrors make the room look very spacious
The addition of the chandelier was a bold but smart move
-Negatives:
The room colors seem to be a little bit too much hospital like to me.
The computer desk and the chair do not match.
The striped comforter does not match the pillow patterns.
I think the dresser and the wardrobe should match in color. and the dresser is a little bit too tall/big.
Apart from that, I guess there is a lot opinionated comments here but what can you do??? People sometimes take things too personally. You put it on the internet, you are bound to have people who like or dislike it.
Cheers-
"Cultural differences"??? It's just a room in a house! Who cares? Why all the speculation? The bottom line is, Jen did a fabulous job and Chi is one lucky girl. As for the color of the room, all of you dissenters should take note: sticking to a sophisticated, monochrome color palette is the trick to making discount merchandise look luxe. This is definitely a job well done.
@creative license
You're exactly right. :) As soon as I'd typed my comment, I felt funny about my "speculating." I just had to say something in response to another poster's unkind/unthoughtful comment, and couldn't express myself as well as you did.
Isn't is a beautiful room though? I keep going back to the pictures and wishing that it was my bedroom. It looks so relaxing and serene. Great job ladies!
Oh wow, so lovely!
@nesting_fish
Actually, you weren't the only one who commented on cultural differences. And I didn't mean to be harsh, but I was actually a little shocked that *anyone* would comment on someone else's living arrangements. Especially on AT. Sometimes you just can't win around here. If a house is too big, it's "wasteful." People are "shocked" and "appalled" when a home has extra bedrooms, or "too much" square footage. Someone once suggested that it would be better to tear down a big old home than to renovate it--because big old homes use too much energy. So I would think that the AT community would be *cheering* when an unoccupied bedroom becomes occupied, even if it's occupied by an adult child. Go figure.
The color scheme seems anything but masculine.
I love it! Very fresh.
But I'd add a bit of color, somehow one teal pillow is not enough color for me. But of course that's just me.
Where was the bedding purchased ?
Oh just saw it. Sorry
This room is pretty and clean, but nothing special. It looks like a page from a catalog.
i understand the need to show contrast in before and after shots, but the before shots are a complete disaster.
i would like to have seen it cleaned up a little bit before taking the "before" picture"
not that it really matters too much, but it's tough to see exactly what it looked like before under the piles of clothes and sheets everywhere.
i mean the dresser drawers aren't even closed!
anyway... very nice job on the makeover.
