It started with a splinter. We'd long neglected the worn, ugly deck off our master bedroom. It contained two chaise lounges, a plant, and a sand table for our toddler, but was still bare and underutilized. Then I got a nasty splinter from it — my third in as many days — and I realized we couldn't ignore it any longer.
It wasn't a rash decision, so much as an acknowledgment that the deck needed repair. The floor needed much more than a sanding — it was warped upwards at the edges and we'd recently patched a leak into the guest room below. A packed summer calendar prompted us to call our contractor, who started the next week. After that, the stars seemed to align for our little project.
Our contractor, being awesome, found us a discounted price on the wood slats. This discount meant that we could also afford to cover the cinderblocks with streamlined slats. Once the wood was installed, the deck looked so much better that I didn't want to resort to our falling-apart chaise lounges. I visited Overstock.com for the first time and found a reasonably-priced couch set; it was as much as one couch at other stores. The floral pillows were on sale at Crate & Barrel. I spotted the blue kids' chairs and sun-powered lanterns one day at Target. I bought the chalkboard on Amazon while buying a birthday present. The only difficult part was finding an affordable, 8x10 outdoor rug. After looking for two weeks, I finally found a recycled plastic mat from B.B. Begonia for $99, which I wrote about here.
The deck became so nice that we started to spend hours out there, slowly adding plants, including herbs, tomatoes, and strawberries. Now we're out there all the time. It's taken us years and years to decorate the inside of our home, piece-by-slowly-collected piece. The upstairs deck was done in three weeks. While it's not the way I typically approach projects, it worked out well this time, and gave us a few months to enjoy it with our friends and family.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Wow! This is a gorgeous transformation. Love that the kids can enjoy it but it is still stylish for the adults.
Gorgeous!!!
And, I'll bet, no splinters! Win-win-win!
Great transformation and I love the covering of the cinderblocks...
With all the talk about how everything seemed to be a good deal, I would love to know the total cost of this project.
I love this! So refreshing!
Cost of the project (without furniture)?
It looks fabulous. I suppose it's the photography, but the deck appears to be in okay shape in the before.
can you post information on the couch set? name/color/price? thx!
yay! :)
It went from College feel to Full Adult Feel.. Wonderful view, and so nice to maybe sit out there in the evenings, watching the world go by...
Nice. Almost like a little treehouse.
Nice to hear a good contractor story for a change. The deck looks great; I'd be using it all the time too.
Beautiful--adds footage to the house! I'd love to relax out there.
I've also seen (in warmer climates) bamboo used to cover the cinder block. The horizontal wood on this deck, however, really opens up the space and looks fresh.
Where do you store the pillows etc.? Do they all fit in that storage box?
Looks great; I would LOVE a deck like that!
Oh, man, I'm bitter that those kids' chairs aren't sold online and are out of stock at all Targets for 100+ miles from me. Sigh. They'd be perfect for my porch, especially in red, and I love that they stack when not in use. I just checked Amazon and they didn't seem to have anything similar at all. Anyone have any ideas for where else to get chairs like that?
p.s. great transformation. ;) This really looks like a comfortable and lovely place to hang out now.
The couch set is the Angelo Napa Springs 3 Piece in Red Tulip. I paid $1100 because they were running a promotion, but the sets they have left (no red, just blue and green) are now $1335.
Labor and material for the deck was $2500.
Not counting plants (which I've slowly added all summer) or things we already owned, the total (for construction, couches, rug, kids' chairs, chalkboard, lanterns, pillows, outdoor storage chest) was about $4000.
A worthy investment. It looked nice before but the after -- Wow! It really adds to your living space. I spend every minute I can on my patio. Fresh air is great for kids. This is a nice way for them to spend even more time outdoors. I can even see them doing their homework or drawing out there. Nice job!
Thanks for the cost breakdown, Kathleen!
Considering this was done by a contractor and how good it looks it seems that you indeed got a very good deal!
AnotherJen: We pull the big cushions inside our bedroom before it rains. Not a perfect solution, but that storage chest is the biggest one we could fit and they're too big for it. The storage chest holds our fire ladder, more toys, a watering can, the umbrella for the sand table, and other random outdoor stuff.
Looks great; thanks for the cost breakdown. 4k actually isn't that bad, considering how well it turned out and how much you can utilize it.

...not to mention, value-added to your home! Looks comfy and inviting!
Awesome!
So happy to hear that is a chalkboard and not a television. You had me worried, but all for not. Awesome looking space; well done!
Very very nice! Just reading the splinter made my toes curl!
I remember that B.B. Begonia post! It looks great, how is it holding up? If you need to drag a chair or something across it, does it get snagged in the weave?
LOVE this! My favorite is the chalkboard!
Very nice!! Like another room in the house! I would be tempted to add window boxes for more plantings without sacrificing floor space, especially with a toddler. Overall, GREAT job!!!
Gorgeous! I'd love to do something similar in my backyard, involving a pagoda and the back of my garage.
Hyzen, we've bought those outdoor kids chairs at Toys 'R' Us in various colours.
once again A.T. posts something that isn't this magical creative transformation. It's just a trip away, a drive to the furniture store. I am still longing to see a before and after where people got super creative to solve problems like an extremely small space, an awkward space, a next to nothing budget, or it's a rental with constraints on what you can do to transform it. This is another catalog pic. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely. Just not the kind of inspired thing I would hope to see on A.T.
Lovely outdoor extension of your home. As Mr T used to say," I love it when a plan comes together!" peacefulones.blogspot.com
Great idea to cover the cinder block - it makes the whole space look so classy. Great job.
Looks so inviting and cosy.. love that rusty red! Great attention to detail with the stained cladding matching the painted cladding on the house! Great job!
This is a great transformation. I especially love the red sofa. You made the deck a lovely place to stay.
Great post. But what's a chaise LOUNGE? and you have two of them!!!
How big is the space? I am sort of planning a similar room. Thanks!
Looks like the perfect spot to relax in the evening.
I love it! If you ever want to be able to keep all the pillows outside, you can get them covered with sunbrella fabric.
I recommend getting covers for your couches so you don't have to bring the cushions inside during rain. I have similar cushions & got the sofa & chair covers from Crate & Barrel (really reasonably priced at under $40 for each cover) & they work wonderfully, even in driving rain. The covers go all the way to the bottom of the furniture & have velcro straps to secure. We will store our cushions in the attic for the winter as we can get several feet of snow. Depending on your location, covers may be sufficient & you can leave it all outside.
Lovely space & wonderful transformation!
Really lovely.
Really nicely done. The slats make a world of difference and I really think the seating makes it truly an extra room. I'll be over at 6. (just kidding)
Kathleen! where do you live? i'm trying to find someone to build a deck around that price here in Southern California!
