For some reason bedrooms seem to be left as the last room in the house to be decorated. I've seen it a lot in friend's houses and House Tours. I am definitely guilty of neglecting my own bedroom, as you can see in this before photo. I am the first to admit — that room is hella ugly! But in two days I was able to take this room from a decorating disaster to delightful with a couple coats of paint (and some major purging).
I’ve been planning the overhaul of my bedroom for months. I’m usually a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants, devil-may-care decorator and — while that usually works for me — it clearly hadn’t in the bedroom. From the moment we painted the bedroom this awful shade of green, I hated it. And then, when the non-refundable bed we ordered online arrived I was also rather nonplussed. When I put it all together at the time I wasn’t pleased but I was willing to settle in and see if I learned to like it. That never happened and I’ve been thinking about redecorating the room almost as soon as I finished it the first time!
The planning and deliberation in redecorating the bedroom was actually really helpful in refining what I wanted to do to the room so that I accomplish it in a short amount of time. After all, my husband and I live in an 800 square foot one bedroom apartment. If I’m going to do an overhaul on the bedroom, it needs to be done in less than three days. Luckily, this project only took two days.
The most dramatic change in the room comes from repainting. The dark green in the before photo was an experiment in color gone awry. From the moment I applied a swath of the new color, inspired by a Tiffany & Co. box, I could see that painting the room was going to absolutely transform it.
The paint mixer at Lowe’s innocently asked me if I wanted to use the new Valspar HD paint. He explained that the paint has a primer mixed into it and thinking about that dark, forest green I had to paint over, I agreed and ended up walking away with two gallons of Valspar HD paint in Tropicana Cabana blue.
To be honest, I hadn’t planned on painting the ceiling the same color as the walls. After I had finished taping around the baseboard and trim, I got a little overzealous and started painting before I taped off the ceiling. As I was painting the wall I thought “hmm, maybe I should paint the ceiling too and then I won’t have to tape”. Am I ever glad I did! Painting the ceiling and walls all one color really works in this room. It’s kind of like sleeping in a giant Tiffany box!
Before I started painting the walls, I was toying with also painting the bed. By the time I the second coat was on the walls, I was convinced that the bed had to be painted. Luckily, I had enough paint leftover from painting all the trim and doors in our apartment when we first moved in. The off-white paint not only transformed the bed from eyesore to OK, it also had the effect of visually shrinking the size of it. When the bed was its original wood finish, it seemed massive in our small bedroom. Painted off white, the bed now seems to recede a bit.
All told, the project cost me less than $200 (including new bedding) and I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Next up: accessories!

Nice! I've always been partial to that color blue myself. Good idea painting the bed also. Looks good together.
Nice! It really did reduce the perception of that bed. But the general editing helped as well. Good Job.
Painting the bed was a major hit! It went from being ship's cabin to oceanfront home....
LOVE the bed.
love the "after" photo!
Oddly, I actually like the Before better than the After. But I may be biased since I really, really love earthy decorating. The green and the star/moon would have looked great with different furniture and more earthy elements.
But for what it is, that sky blue is a lovely colour.
LOVE! I especially enjoy the ceiling. It makes me want to scrape off all of our popcorn stuff so I can paint mine too!
hey, where does the bed come from? it's kind of crazy but wow, that's a lot of storage....
Oh man, I'm so glad you painted. That green! And the bed not only looks much smaller, the color helps it seem less 1970's campy and more upscale. Great improvement.
I like the new look, but I liked the old look too. That bold green was absolutely delicious. It would have been interesting to paint that monstrous bed first and then see how it worked with the green.
Still, as I said, the new look is good too. The only thing I'd do is bring back the Flor rug from the Before picture
What a huge difference. That green is probably the color that repulses me the most (in my whole life) and I can guess it wasn't flattering to the skin being in that room either. Meanwhile the Tiffany's blue is flattering on a variety of skin tones and just cheery and calming in general. I love the bright pops of vermillion too. The bed is big, but with it's new fresh coat looks more like a cloud aloft in that spring sky. Congrats!
I liked the green better :( But the bed looks a lot better painted. Maybe I'm biased because I look awesome in green :) hehe
especially that green :)
Love the transformation! Since you plan to accessorize ... please bring back that star/moon metallic wall art ... love that!
oh & I agree with Blandwagon ... bring back the rug, too ... the colors would work well with your changes.
Great work in such a few days.
Both are lovely, but I liked the before better=P
I actually liked the before much better, perhaps because I don't like that light blue, and I don't think you should have painted the ceiling.
Well since it's not done, it's hard to comment. The before looks better now because it's completed and cohesive.
Really? A "disaster?" If that's a disaster, my bedroom must be a mudslide-covered tsunami. I'm not saying I love the before, but jeez, lighten up on the hyperbole a little, it's just decorating.
Painting the bed is a big improvement, but I liked the green better, personally.
I think the before picture wasn't that bad at all. And I'm biased against the after pic palette. Light blue, pink, green...
I like the 'before' and love the green walls. The blue walls are somewhat cold and clinical.
Looking at the blue walls again I can safely say that I think they are DREADFUL!
looks so much better. absolutely DO NOT put the home goods moon art back on the wall.
Great after! The bed before looked water bedish. Good idea to paint ceilings in a small room too, and great color choices.
The bed looks about 10 Million times better painted. Great choice!
Sigh. I don't get this trend to paint interesting wood furniture white so it looks like painted particle board. The bed would be fantastic with a new wall colour. There's no more character in the room. Looks like a typical flyer photo.
Vast improvement. The before picture made the room look like the inspiration had been Jerry Garcia.
It looks like a little girl's room now. All it needs is some My Little Ponies along the headboard. Painting the bed made it look so cheap!
Definitely preferred the room before, with the rich wood on the bed. A deeper, more forest green would've looked much nicer. Loved the floating shelves. Even that Pier One-ish wall art is better than the big blank slate of nothingness above the bed.
I liked it before! It looks like a tween/pottery barn kids room in the after. Sorry!
Love the after -- it's a million times better! That forest green and medium-toned wood bed really dated the space, but it looks fresh and modern now. I'm also happy to see the rug and moon artwork go (don't bring them back!). Nice job!
I'm glad other people liked it before too...
Though wasnt a fan of the rug... and the giant moon thing is questionable... but the natural wood made the bed look timeless, and the green walls were much more relaxing and cozy than bright blue.
Though if the change was for say, a guest bedroom to a room for a 15 year old, I'd say not bad.
The huge bed to me is such an eyesore. The after looks better than before, but it looks terribly bare. Need to bring back that rug!
I liked the before and after... great job either way!! :)
I think the new look is more attractive. It's a very pretty blue and you've done it beautifully. The floor's better without the rug (looks much more spacious!) and the bed really benefits from that white. But there's also a naivety to it that would make it a dream children's room, but personally not my ideal bedroom. I think the painted ceiling is what does it. If the ceiling were white the pale blue would be less toyroom-ish.
I do absolutely love the bed, very luxurious. I dream of having that much storage. If I owned that bed it would be in a white room with floorlength drapes, a tiny mirrored dressing table and some Louis XIV-esque chairs.
Much better, its looks cleaner and more current! How well did the paint work? I need to take a room to a lighter shade and am dreading the process...
I wouldn't say the before was a disaster, but the after is much much better! I had to double check to see if that dresser was the same one; the paint completely transforms it. It looks brand new and the character in it really stands out. The after is just so much brighter!
*definitely* need info on that bed, please : )
and yeah, the 'after' is quite nice, but i'm more drawn to the before, myself. (love the wall color & the stained-not-painted bed.)
I like the painted bed better...it's not an iconic piece of furniture so why does it matter if its painted or not?
If I like the look of painted/colorful furniture, does that mean I should only buy particle board made stuff so that I don't "ruin" wood furniture? Why can't I be allowed to enjoy the structural strength of wood without the wood look?
Just use the right paint and the right application, and it will last a long time.
I prefer grayed-down colors for walls but I still think this color will look great as soon as you put up some art so its not front and center :)
Seems like a lot of work for not much of a change. The bed seems too big for the room, but YMMV.
oh my god i want that bed! please please please please please please post where you got it from!

found the bed...mostly...i think...
Totally agree with the whole bedrooms come last thing. I've been moved in for almost a month and mine still looks like a disaster. I love your re-do! I think it is light and happy but still rich and vibrant. definitely a good call painting the ceiling the same colour... i can't imagine anything else working quite as well! decorating such a fun room is going to be a blast, i'm sure. anyhoo, great choices i think! haters will hate, lol. and i am on the bed loving bandwagon.
As much as I love natural wood, painting the bed is definitely an improvement. But I love that green. With the white bed and new window treatment it woould have looked so fresh and cheery!
The before's not so bad, but I prefer the after because it looks more roomy.
MUCH better! The robin's egg blue walls and the melon-colored bedding are perfect together.
"Hella ugly?"
Im sorry, you went from 'meh' to 'meh.'
I don't think the before was a disaster, but I didn't like it. I thought it looked dated. Especially with the wood. It reminded me of a cabin. But the after looks so clean and fresh looking. I love the wall color. Painting the bed made a world of difference to me, and I agree about bringing back some of the original accessories. Especially that rug.
The bedroom was okay before, but with the new paint and bedding it turned out really, really beautiful! Congratulations. Never mind the naysayers. Your work paid off. I love it.
I second @dirce79. While I'm sure it provides loads of storage, that bed just seems enormous for the room. Maybe it's the angle of the photo though...
LOVE LOVE LOVE! I'm on the tail end of renovating my bedroom and this is just fabulous!
you should send me those flor tiles from the 'before' :)
the perfect example of why it's okay to paint wood furniture. beautiful.
I like the before better. Where'd the rug go? The cute hanging storage cubes on the wall? The little step ladder to get into bed?
Maybe this was an "after" shot before they added back all the decorating, but the picture is a bed in an otherwise completely empty room. Since when is that "decorating"?
I liked the metal art piece on the wall... just perhaps not on that wall where it makes the bed seem even taller. Without the art to bridge the gap between headboard and ceiling, the bed feels shorter.
I liked the green color of the "before" photo much better than the blue. I did like that you painted the bed white, though.
i liked the bold green as well; the after look is more fit for a teenage girl!! i do think that bed is awful, but the off white helps alot....
It's amazing what a little paint can do!
Dunno why but I like the old look better...I love the wood color so I think the bed is much nicer in the before pic. But I love the new color of the walls.
