Jenna sent us an email about her recent renovation project: Last week we just completed our big kitchen reno… on a budget! Here are some before & after details:

Before:
Pink walls, beige formica counters, old white tile floors, chrome and brass fixtures, 90's whitewashed oak cabinets, mismatched fluorescent panel lighting, empty unused walls and lack of counter space.
After:
Painted white cabinets, all new hardware, open shelving, recessed lighting, new tile floors, granite counters, stainless steel undermount sink, glass subway tile backsplash, and a built in bar cabinet which nearly doubled our counter space.
We estimate the entire project came in at or around $5k--we saved a ton by keeping the white appliances and using gift cards we had saved up at Lowe's.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Love that you were able to add open shelving without ripping out upper cabinets to fit it in. And the colors you've chosen for the backsplash/counters/floor work great together. This kitchen layout is giving me a headache just to look at, though.
Look! We added a cat!
I would like to see more color.
My favorite change is adding a kitty! lol!
Looks great, but seems to be begging for a bit more color. Kitty is a nice addition though.
It's beautiful! I think the way you've accessorized seals the deal for me. :)
Wow!! That's a whole lotta bang for the buck if all that was done for $5,000. Great job!
I like the look of the "new" kitchen. It's very clean looking and feels fresh and current.
However, I do think the "old" kitchen had a lot of potential. I liked the color of the cabinets--they could've been updated by changing out the hardware. Painting the pink walls would've helped make the look more modern, and of course, changing the countertops too.
The floating shelves are a great way to add style and stay within budget. Nice job!
I love that subway tile, but that layout is something else, way to make the best of it
So, what was the budget without the gift cards?
Love it, simple and clean. I love the kitty more tho!
Looks great, so much brighter and more modern. I like white appliances and think they look great.
simply scrumptious!
An amazing task for the money... and for those asking for more color, kitchens naturally attract color as they are used. I love a neutral, calm base. And neutral does not equal dull...
That looks great! I wonder if they matched the cabinet paint to the white of their appliances? I also have white appliances that have cream undertones and wonder if they'll look dirty if I paint the cabinets around them white. Nevertheless, great job!
I like it. The pink paint was the worst I've ever seen. Who would do that? Especially with ithe white-washed cabinets. Anything would have been an improvement over that.
If you add a bot of colour (art, kitchen towels, bowl of fruit etc) it is going to be a great room! Nice!
Lovely job! While I preferred the original cabinet color myself (I've lived with crisp-white cabinets before, and all they're good for is spotlighting the tiniest of stains and dirt like giant monstrosities, in my opinion!), I like everything else. The gray tiles and the more subtle recessed lighting are my favorite parts!
Thank you for your comments. The kitchen layout actually doesn't really bother me... but then again I'm not the biggest cook. The whole house is full of random odd wall and ceiling angles (like every other 90's Florida house I've seen), so we're just used to it.
We had $1700 in Lowe's gift cards which paid for nearly all of our granite (and free sink) + installation. The remodel definitely would have been over 5k if that wasn't factored in.
The cabinet paint is off-the-shelf white (BM's Advance), but luckily it blends in well with the appliances.
What a change! You made a huge impact for the money spent. I love that the kitchen looks so fresh and clean. The new lighting and fixtures really make the space look modern. Going with white cabinets integrates your old white appliances, and now the look like they belong in the space. You definitely made the right choice by going with timeless features, like your granite and back splash colors/materials. You can always add "on-trend" accessories and change them up. Great job!
The white cabinets work much better: The white appliances scattered throughout the complicated room, aggressively angled soffits and and fussy cabinet doors, all created a sense of confusion.
The appliances are not beautiful. They now blend into the rest of the kitchen. Without the yucky fluorescents, the quieter soffits now add interest, rather than confusion.
The remodel was over $5K, you just paid for some of it with gift cards.
My first impulse was to gut it and turn it into a two bedroom apartment. I guess I've lived in tiny city spaces too long? :-)
The kitchen turned out really nice. I like all the colours you chose (and of course the kitty!). It looks great considering you didn't change out the appliances either (they look much better with the white)
I do like the open shelving but I'm not a fan of the backets holding them up. I think they look to chunky for the rest of the kitchen, but pretty minor overall. Good job!
Potluck : She mentions in a post that they used a $1700 gift card to pay for the granite. It's 5K + the gift card
Nice!!! I am on the brink of my own kitchen remodel...so the inspiration is awesome!! Brighter colors can be added with accessories....for those that need that!! But it is fresh, clean and totally inspiring! Any advice for the best in cabiniet re-doing?? Oh....and if I didn't mention the sweet cat....it would throw all the other posts off...LOL!! Cute!
Could you please tell us the products and methods you used to paint your cabinets?
Thank you for sharing your terrific project!
that's not on a budget (nice kitchen btw)
I followed John & Sherry's steps for painting our cabinets: http://www.younghouselove.com/2012/01/how-to-paint-your-cabinets-aka-hallelujah/
pink paint is the worst in a kitchen. My old townhouse had pink, gold, mint green spatterpaint...nauseating.
I appreciate a white kitchen, myself, so I can see the little pops of color that are there, instead of just seeing it as colorless, like some people here are.
I think it was a nice re-do with a tricky space. And $5k IS most definitely a budget considering what was done here. Just because it's not a budget someone else can relate to shouldn't take away from the fact that this was a redo on the cheap (again, for what was done and the quality) that is pretty inspiring. Well done!
You must be very proud. You did a great job! Love the color of the subway tile, and how it blends with the other great choices. The recessed lighting makes a huge difference. And I love color, but love this space is so calm and relaxing. Besides, there is color! What about that beautiful teakettle!
A kitchen redo for 6700K is most definitely on a budget. Anyone who doesn't think so has not remodeled their kitchen lately. I love the new recessed lighting - that was the worst part of the original kitchen to me. I actually really like the shape. I love angled walls. It makes it interesting. I love the way it turned out! My kitchen consists of a laundry sink, hotplate and a folding table at the moment, so I'm inspired :)
Did you do the hinges yourself? How??
screw more color. the cat so much for this room, I say just add more cats.
*did so much for this room

Love Kitty! Great job and kudos for you keeping your cabinetry and reducing your impact. Being from FL, I know kitchens like these abound in developments. I think the white looks great with all the angles. I love the floor tile pattern, too. So much better than the same old white shiny builders grade ceramic.
This looks nice. I think I would have tried to work with the old cabinet color, though, while changing the floors, countertops, backsplash, lighting and wall color. I'm starting to suffer from white cabinet fatigue (a sure sign that a trend has begun to peak) and I'm craving kitchens with a little color and coziness these days. But anyway, still a nice job.
Your total cost, even with the gift cards, is impressive. I just did a similar reno on a 90's eyesore of a kitchen and it cost me 9K. We chose to keep the original maple cabinets, replace pink Corian with honed black granite, and update the fixtures and hardware.
I think your reno is fresh and clean and an incredible improvement. Props for doing it all without overspending. Enjoy!
The new kitchen is huge improvement. Is that a wine fridge below the open shelves? If so, even better!
What is with the insanely giant fridge in the first pic?
"A kitchen redo for 6700K is most definitely on a budget. Anyone who doesn't think so has not remodeled their kitchen lately."
Yes, exactly. Because many (really: many) people can't afford that amount for a remodelling. In fact for many (really: many) people, 6.700K is a year's income. So, again: lovely kitchen, very well done, but unless this is a blog for wealthy people *only*, no it was not done on a budget. Nothing wrong with the article, just a poor choice of adjectives.
I think Jenna did a great job. Love the new look. Clean and inviting. But, I do think the total should be updated to $6700 in the post - that is the true cost (no matter whether it was paid for by gift card or not). Great job overall, and budget friendly for what you got!
Wow, it went from Miami Vice to House Beautiful! I just can't believe the transformation. Great job!
I'm not for white kitchens, but you made the appliances fit in nicely.
I like the cat. Its looks like my Bombay kitty :-)
Adding kitty is a huge improvement. The kitchen is lovely, too.
Love the kitchen...the cat...grrrrrr...
Super nice Kitty Addition ! The after looks so much better in every way than the before. Great job! A sweet little funny faced cat too.
Just checked out your blog photos -- everything you did makes perfect sense. Love the open shelving -- .
