Our Homies winner in the Kids at Home category, Meg of Whatever posted Before & After images of her kitchen remodel — and it's a total transformation.
The massive makeover took 3 months and involved tearing down a wall to transform a porch into an expanded family area of the new kitchen.
You can see more pictures of the process Whatever | Before and After and see a great list of FAQ and resources from Meg in a follow up post Whatever | Questions.

Wow. Just, WOW. What a transformation!
my comment is also WOW
It is very pretty. I love the openness and usefulness. I also love how the white is so fresh and so warm at the same time. The big island open to the family room reminds me of the Cougar Town set. I watched a whole episode because I liked the interior. My eye goes ouch with all the kiddeh stuff on the walls. But that being said, if I had kiddehs, and it was their art all up on the wall, I haven't a doubt I'd love it every bit as much as this owner must. :-)
definitely a lovely look but obviously when you gut an entire room and have what appears to be an unlimited budget, your possibilities are endless :-X.
i'd prob. replace those cheap office chairs with something a bit more elegant and streamlined.
Like light at the end of the tunnel.
Yes, the before was fairly ugly but at least it effectively utilized the vertical space above the wall cabinets with additional enclosed storage unlike the new kitchen...
...those precious chandeliers will be caked with grease and grime in no time...
...and poor Dad has to get on his knees to use the Microwave?
I'm sure they're proud of their kids - but good grief that's alotta stuff on the walls...
I love love love the kid artwork and pictures. It makes that beautiful space look like a home. :)
This feels like a warm and comfortable home. I also love the kids artwork on the cabinets! I'm betting the ample seating at the island is an absolute dream. Very nice!
Beautiful!!
Not to be a jerk, but it is very nice and very bland and very standard. Is this really the most interesting kitchen redo out there? I find that hard to believe. Personally, I think kitchen islands and granite countertops are the kitchen equivalent of vinyl siding.
"not to be a jerk but..." It's like saying "No disrespect but your sister's a slut"...lol there's no reason to be rude.
I didn't think I was being rude. I'd say this person did exactly what they set out to do--they created a pleasant, warm, and very standard-issue kitchen. My gripe is with the idea that this kitchen is somehow award-worthy. I don't see that.
I think its about how dark and ugly it was before to how pleasant it looks now. Not show worthy but the before and after images are pretty drastic which makes good visual content.
I believe the blog won the award, not the kitchen.
While this seemed boring and standard at first, I really like the little touches throughout- like the globe above the fridge and letting an entire wall of cabinets get covered in kid projects. This kitchen feels lived in and inviting.
I don't think it's all that interesting. And it was clearly done with a lot of money, and time, and a big space to work with.
Not to be a jerk, but I agree with what djs said about the execution.
Yes, I'd be interested in seeing the final price tag.
thank you for all kind words....those of you who took time to leave them.
we really LIVE in our kitchen.
-sydneybristow you rock.
-having 5 children on our computer everyday makes me NOT want to replace the cheap office chairs. have you seen how kids sit on chairs while playing computer games?
-someday we will have very pretty chairs there. but for now these work perfectly.
-i am proud of my kids. :)
-the chandeliers clean very easily.
-poor dad has some how done just fine using the microwave.
-we don't have a ton of money or time...but we do have a great 100 year old home in a small town that we are having a great time remodeling. but how nice that it appears that way.
thanks apartment therapy for featuring me.
Wow! I love it! Love the chalkboards and art wall, love the chandeliers, love the leaded glass window. I now have kitchen envy. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous remodel.
You did a really nice job. It looks functional and stylish. It also has nice personal touches, which every home should have.
I was just in NYC for Brizo's Fashion Week presentation. Loved their new products, which can also bring sensible style to your kitchen. Here's one I particularly delighted in seeing:
