It's like an amazing episode of House Hunters International: photographer Jérémie Buchholtz was searching for the rare affordable apartment in Bordeaux, France, but all he could find within his price range was an abandoned and neglected 441 square foot garage primarily used to store an assortment of junk. Yet Jérémie recognized an overlooked diamond in the rough, called up architect buddy Matthieu de Marien, and from there the pair embarked on an amazing before and after project to carve out a modest space into a modern home of space efficiency...
From Fair Companies story on the home: "De Marien took one look at the historic street and recognized it as something special. Passage Buhan is a private passageway where the owners each own half of the road so life extends into the street. And the history here is rich: a couple centuries ago, the laneway housed horses and their riders en route to the then city of Bordeaux and the old stable still sits on the street.Buchholtz bought the property and De Marien quickly cut into the old garage to create more light and ventilation. The roof is historic and couldn't be touched so he carved a 12 square meter (129 square foot) patio out of the small space, leaving only 41 square meters of living space (441 square feet).
In order to make the space feel larger, De Marien created a "house within a house": one large piece of furniture that includes the bathroom, bedroom, office, closet, a sofa bed and all of the home's storage. With everything contained in this large furniture box, the rest of the home was given more breathing room."

Shaw's Original Fir...
Love the space, except for the window/door to the left. Makes it look like he serves lattes on the side.
I've seen this a couple of places before, and it always impresses. Much like the Barcelona rooftop conversion featured in Houzz: http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1820833/list/Houzz-Tour--Tiny-Fold-Out-Apartment-in-Barcelona
These places take 1) creative vision from the architect or designer and 2) daily discipline from the occupant to make the tight spaces work. It helps to be a minimalist....
I wonder how he got the skylights if he wasn't allowed to touch the historic roof?
amazing home.
Thanks for sharing. LOVED this creativeness! LOVE seeing how others live, especially when it's different from my own taste.
I love this.
Love it. Beauty out of a dump.
This is very cool. Minimalist at its best. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome idea! Though Im not sure if someone very tall could live there :)
This has been around for awhile, in fact, I'm almost certain it was posted to AT...
Okay I'm not crazy - this is the 4th time it's been posted on AT
I guess I missed this when it was posted before, but no matter. Absolutely love this kind of repurposing.
This is amazing!! I love everything about it.
I love it. I've never seen it before so I'm happy that it was posted again. It gives such inspiration for what can be done when one has a vision. Makes me look at my garage a little differently too:)
Brilliant!
I know I would fail miserably in such a minimalist environment though. I was picking out bookshelves to put on the far wall as I was looking at the pictures.....
Fantastic!
Love this space, so what would this cost in American Dollars and how could I do this?
Astonishing!
I am in love. With this house. And the French accent(s). And the guy in the white shirt (I nearly passed out when he lay on the bed!). After watching this, I feel like a cat in a patch of sunshine.
why do folks care so much if something's been posted before? get over it?
Love it! I was wonder how they were able to do a sky light too with the roof restrictions.
Very imaginative recreation of the space. The polished look is attractive and inviting. Natural organic colors in the space give the home is refreshing feel. I like the design overall expect for sofa. I'm a suker for a comfortable and this sofa looks uncomfortable to me.

Not a fan of the singular modular piece of custom furniture but I have to say I am impressed by it, nonetheless. I could live here happily with the addition of a few [small] quirky pieces. Well done. It's truly a lovely space but I admire the creativity behind it more than the actual space. I will admit the patio & the facade leave me drooling. What a gift the designer has!
I was initially sceptical ,then I fell in love. What an AMAZING space.if your 5'6 and 150 lbs! :) Seriously,I love it.Watch the tour, its worth it.
Love it. Wonder if it still cost a million dollars though. Does anyone know?
Holy cow, that place is 4x the size of my apartment. Want!
Seen it before, but I still like it. Still, all that glass too keep clean! Yikes!
I dig it.
Big panes of glass are easier to clean. Lay a towel at the base, use a mop and squeegee. 10 minutes tops to do all that glass.
I like the transformation, although I seen it before. Didn't see the movie though. Anyone noticed the box of tissues beside the bed ;)
My thoughts exactly
It's impressive, but incredibly boring to my eyes. It looks like an office to me.
I've seen this before too, and I never get tired of it. I'd move there in a heartbeat.
I think it's inspirational. I love the space being repurposed into a home and the imagination of the designer. There are so many features. The utility of the furniture reminds me of a room on a well fitted boat where everything has a well thought out place.
I want this in a low-offgassing, knock-down unit which can be unbolted and moved. It's the most efficient space utilization I've ever seen. This could turn many, many wasted spaces into good living quarters for low-income people. and retirees.
I'm off to find a garage! I would happily live in a home like this. With the ever rising house prices in London this is an ideal solution.
Yes, we've seen it before. And I've seen it published on just about every architecture site & design blog in existence anywhere in the world over the last five years.
But hey, if AT is going to repeat posts (SophieTO above did a count & says it's the 4th time here), shouldn't we be grateful they're repeating this one?
It's brilliant enough design for them to re-post every year for the benefit of AT noobs who didn't catch it before.
Plus of course there's the nifty side benefit that all these repeat viewings gives LivvyUK & me the chance to catch the instant replay of the sexy french accent guy sprawling out on the bed over & over again which can be, if I do say so myself, quite Apartment Therapeutic! ;-)
Unreal, and so cozy. Incredible creativity went into this...
very very cool
Love it! He looks like he actually has a lot of belongings, but you wouldn't know it! Might struggle a little for space if a couple was living there - but I think it would still be freer space wise than a studio because its such an intelligent design!
Ps only in Europe would the local council let u do such a daring design... And it paid off!
This is not "French" it's simply in France. I was so excited, and then so disappointed, it's a boring stark box., Was hoping for some real French style.
And he even had space for a full-fledged NAD stereo with tower speakers.
nicely done but not impressed with the box in the middle

Awesome. I wish I could live so simply.
magnifique, vraiment. loved it, especially the incorporation of the patio area despite the small space.
A city allowed someone to legally convert a garage into a home? I didn't know such a thing was possible. I would like to know more so that I can do the same!
@leilanitexas, I can only assume that SophieTO must have found something better to look at - although I can't imagine what that would be??
I have to admit that it took me much longer to watch this video than it should have, as I kept getting lost in the sight and sound of Matthieu and had to keep rewinding to catch up on the subtitles!
I had heard Maxwell talk about 'house porn' before, but never fully appreciated the concept - until now.
what a dream.
Swoon. I know architects like to use the word "volume" frequently, but it really, really applies here. The house feels (or at least looks) so much bigger than its stats. The bed is just like a nest. I'm sure it wouldn't work for many, but I would be thrilled to live there. Heck, just stay there one night. Amazing and so well-planned. I couldn't be more enthralled with this little place and its creator and owner. Well done!
I love it when people see the bare bones and imagines what would it could be like. The exterior, interior patio is charming and warm (love the paint treatment on the wall). The great skill needed is in making a plain space and turning it into a gem.
I love it. Very inspirational.
Amazing. I'd love to have that all in one bed, bathroom, office and sleeper sofa made for my garage... anyone see any info on the architect? Would love to buy the plans and have it built in the States.
I like the idea of nesting, but that bed would only work for a 5'5" Frenchman. That one-piece furniture unit was unnecessary, the layout could've been broken into nooks that allowed for a ground-level bed and a real couch.
The large wooden door should've been partitioned into two-pieces so when it was opened it would allow full use of the kitchen window/bar. The tv wasn't centered in its alcove, that would drive me crazy! It needs a houseplant or two.
Still, it's a very creative reuse of the garage, and a great example of hidden storage without necessarily being minimal to an extreme. Voila!
