This master bedroom needed a modern update and some TLC in order to transform it from drab 1980's tract style into a sleek and sophisticated sanctuary.

When you live in a home for awhile, it is easy to get used to certain architectural elements that may not be helping a space out. This space had a large soffit surrounding the room that seemed to enclose it in a negative way. With no structural significance and enough natural light in the room, it was time to open up the space by removing the soffit for a modern look.

Fresh paint using Restoration Hardware's Slate and a bright white for the ceiling accentuates the existing architectural angles of the room. Modern furnishings and a gorgeous chandelier from Ochre replace the outdated ceiling fan. Finally, the upholstered bed, belgian linen bedding, and soft silk draperies add warmth to the room.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Nice. Very nice. I love white bedding.
I love that upholstered bed. It suits the room, looks clean, but also reminds me of a giant, comfy sofa. That chandelier is also sexy.
SO much better!! Love the paint color, good job!
This is so minimally gorgeous. I love the chandelier - it's stunning. And the neutral tones layer onto each other in a really calming, relaxing way. Lovely!
But the floors are REALLY what makes the room. Those are beautiful floors!
This is not my decorating style but it's really lovely. The paint color is beautiful and it was a great call removing that soffit.
Love it, fantastic job! Love that they demo'd the soffit. The thing I really hate about tract houses these days are all the unnecessary soffit's and niches and pass through windows, etc.
Lovely! I would love to get more info on the floors. Nice job!
I love the side tables and lamps. Where are they from?
It looks great but I question whether the headboard is too big and heavy for the space.
And I also question whether the space would look better without the wall-mounted candles, which look a bit like sconces and as a result, somewhat odd situated next to lamps.
Who makes the chandelier? I love it!
Wow! I wish I could do this to my in-law's house! They have very similar decor to the "before" photo and I would love to play Designer at their house and transform it like this. :)
I would also love to know where those side tables/nightstands are from. I would love to get the same ones for my bedroom!
Wow! The chandelier!
Love the chandelier. That and the floors really make the room. You've just upped the value of that home significantly with those changes. Good job.
the general consensus is that the chandelier outshines the room (no pun intended). we're all going to need a source before this gets out of hand =P
I'm impressed at how clean the unsoffited walls look -- you'd never know anything had been there. This is instructional because in the same circumstances, I would have spent my whole life thinking "removing the soffit is not worth doing; I'll learn to overlook it," and I never would have known. Thanks for the example.
Yay for removing the weird soffits (hate those things) and putting in wood floors. Everything looks great except the candle sconces. Those are, um, sort of like the soffits - they have no true function, and their placement is awkward. And they have antennae. A large, gorgeous black and white photo above the headboard would look one thousand times better.
Great choices, love the paint, then instantly noticed the new floors. Even with all the other changes, had the carpeted floor been left as is, the effect would not have been the same. Therefore it bothers me that there is no mention of that. Having candles with fire right next to an upholstered headboard on those mounted sconces, is that wise?
And BRAVO for removing that ceiling fan. I know they are functional but 99.97% of them are heinous.
great job! a 180° turnaround.
Very nice after. Just like Bee for Brian I'm really impressed by how clean the walls look, and the rest is great as well.
Reminds me of my master bedroom, except we have reverse soffits (there's a ledge over our bedroom door that then turns the corner and is a ledge on the other wall). I would much rather they had just walled that area in instead of making a silly 12" deep ledge! We also have a cathedral ceiling like that on the wall the bed needs to go on, and I've found that everything I do with our furniture/decorationg seems very off balance because of it. Right now I'm building a bef from Ana White's site (a version of the farmhouse bed) with a high headboard to accomidate my husband wanting to sit up and read in bed. I'm hoping the more substantial bed will help things a bit.
So jealous! Love everything
Apparently no one has read the text accompanying the photos... It appears the chandelier is made by Ochre (see link here: http://ochre.net/products/lighting/chandeliers/arctic-pear).
ooohhhh artic pear chandelier, if only you didn't cost approximately a gazillion and a half dollars.
Claire-- this is a fabulous redo. I hope we get to see more of the home soon. Is it yours?
Wow! Gorgeous. I'm going to steal this paint color. (Is the chandelier a bit crooked?)
I'd love to see a post on GOOD, non-outdated ceiling fans.
love the framed hermes scarf!
The wall color, soffit removal and the floors are the real show stopper. It really wouldn't have mattered what else was done. The room still looks kind of busy for my tastes, but I appreciate the transformation all the same.
great !! The lamps are lovely but are they good enough when reading in bed? The chandelier does look a bit askew but perhaps it is the angle of the photo.
I love it!! I got that spa-ish feeling when I saw the after pictures.
So beautiful & restful.
Oh, how I wish I could replace my ceiling fan with a lovely chandelier, but it is a neccessity for cooling for us.
WOW! Gorgeous!
I can't find any info on the end tables, please tell us where you found them! Seriously beautiful job.
love chandelier. is that a knock off or is it the artic pear? becauseeeeeeee there is no way ill ever be able to afford a $3,690.00 light fixture. but would love to have a similar one that is less
Very Belgian; very, very nice.
Is the bed from Ochre as well? It is strange that it is not a queen size... Wish I could afford that chandelier for my house; it really makes the room.
Getting rid of that soffit made a huge difference; some features put in by builders are bad design.
Very, very nice! I'd like to sleep in that room. :-)
I love everything about this bedroom. Beautiful fabrics, colors, of course the amazing chandelier and even the funky Jan Barboglio sconces (I'm a JB collector) Fabulous redo!
I just bought what I think is a decent knockoff of that chandelier from Overstock.
Sorry, but I had to laugh at Parnassus's comment:
"And BRAVO for removing that ceiling fan. I know they are functional but 99.97% of them are heinous"
Sexy bed, sexy floor. This is really, really good.
This is a great transformation. I love the warm soothing colors in the bedroom.
KellyK, "Is the chandelier a bit crooked?" - these photos look like they were taken with a wide-angle lens, which would explain why the chandelier looks crooked - or curved really - when it's in the edge of the frame.
Fantastic redo. Those stupid soffits are horrible.
YAY! awesome job- it looks a million times better! :)
LOVE everything about this makeover! Love the paint color, the chandelier.... every little thing!!
I also LOVE this redo. It's exactly my style. Would also love to see a house tour.
Beautiful. Inspiring. Stylish. Motivating.. But...if you have a ceiling fan, isnt it there for a reason? It'd be a shame not t be able to sleep in the beautiful room because it's too hot!
I'm another who would love to know where the end tables came from - I'm looking for something exactly like that.
Very interesting to see how much the removal of the unnecessary soffits changed the room. I would have never thought to do that- yet the difference is dramatic.
Thank you for showing us your bedroom.
I agree that the makeover looks soooo much better, however, the results still reek of suburban style, IMHO. I fear they are about a minute away from looking as outdated as their predecessor.
And YES on the comments about ceiling fans. I have a really fugly one in the living room of my rental until and I am at a loss about what to do with it.
@LeahDC - If you go to her website you can see the whole house. It's pretty gorg.
If you have an ugly ceiling fan that performs a necessary service, try flipping the blades (many with ugly rattan or etched designs are plain on the other side) and painting the entire fan unit to match the ceiling.
This bedroom is nice, but not very romantic. Needs some red splashes if this is a couple's room. From a Feng Shui stand point... I don't like a chandelier hanging over my bed while I sleep! Creepy. What if it fell on me? You never know. Hey it could happen. Plus it's too much energy in the bedroom. If there's a mirror in there, the couple will never sleep good.
Ug. I have to disagree with Mayflowers. Red accent walls are waaaaaay over done by home owners. I've seen far too many. A vibrant red wall would keep me more awake than a mirror. Also, I've been sleeping with a mirror in my room for 23 years. Anyway...
Well done! This room is so calming and serine! I'm not enamored with the bedding, personally. But-- Love the chandelier, love the floors, love the headboard although I would pick a different textile for myself, love the glass table lamp and love the little succulents! Too cute
@Mayflowers - You are kidding, right? It's someone's bedroom, it doesn't have to conform to Feng Shui if they don't want it to. I'm sure they sleep well without splashes of red or worrying about energy.
As for the chandelier, I'd tend to agree, but if you look at the first photo, you can see that the fan is way over the foot of the bed, away from where it would fall right on you while you'd sleep. The after pictures have a strange perspective that seems to make the chandelier seem like it's right over the pillows, but I think it's not even quite over the foot of the bed.
Please post source info for those great bedside tables!
I asked about the bedside tables on her Facebook page, and she said that they were custom pieces. :(
what happened to the ceiling?
